A little background on the car. This Jaguar was among three vehicles owned by my father. He has passed away at age 84 and my mother has decided she is now ready to part with them. We have sold his classic Mercedes 560SL and will be selling his Mercedes S55 AMG in the coming months. This model Jaguar, he Vanden Plas Supercharged, s very difficult to find due to its very limited production and specification as a special order only. It took him close to 2 years to find the one he wanted as there were only approximately 788 built worldwide over the 5 year run from 1998-2002. According to Michael Cook (Jaguar Archive)there were 234 built in 2001. This one was built AFTER Jaguar had resolved the Nikasil cylinder coating issue. This vehicle IS NOT affected by that, aking it one of only 400 of so available in the world in this package and after the engine problems. The luxury appointments combined with the supercharged motor was simply too much for him to resist. He was the third owner of the Jaguar. The Carfax, hich I’d be glad to share with interested parties, uggests four owners. This was due to my parent’s relocation from New Mexico to Louisiana and change in registration to my mother’s name following his death. He purchased the car in July of 2008 with 27kmiles and proceeded to put on only 9000 additional miles in the subsequent 7 ½years. Being retired, nd having several vehicles, he mileage on all of his cars was very low. The car was always garaged during his ownership.
Knowledgeable buyers will know the relative scarcity of this model. While base 2001 XJ models could be purchased in the mid $50k range, he Vanden Plas Supercharged version’s starting price was over $83k with additions for the few options that were available. This is a very nice low mileage example of a car that is difficult to find. Finished in Sapphire Blue (only available on Vanden Plas models) over an Ivory interior, t is quite striking with its long, ow lines. I’ve driven this car on many occasions over the years and have always enjoyed the combination of luxury and spirited performance. The 370hp 387lb/ft 4.0l supercharged motor is a welcome step up from the standard 290hp version. In reading a MotorTrend article from when thecar was released, saw a 5.4 sec. 0-60 time. Not bad for a luxury vehicle from that era.
The overall condition of the car is very, ery nice. Being a car that is 15 years old, t is not a“new car” and I will make every effort to describe its imperfections. As a car enthusiast who has bought and solds everal vehicles over the internet, understand the importance of an accurate description of a vehicle that may be purchased sight unseen. I believe that the new owner will be quite pleased.
From a mechanical perspective I am not aware of any needs or concerns. The car was serviced regularly and any significant issues were always promptly addressed. The only recent concern was related to a problem with one of the fuel pumps, nd both fuel pumps were subsequently replaced. When I recently drove the vehicle, noticed that the power antenna was not retracting all the way when the car was turned off (approximately 4” remained above the fender). The antenna goes up and down from this position without issue. Perhaps it is a matter of lubrication, ut I have not been able to have this looked into. I drove it 150 miles earlier this week andchecked all the various components. Everything worked just as expected. I always forget how good the 9 speaker Alpine sound system is. The car has the additional built in Motorola cell phone, hich of course is not active at this point.
Cosmetically, he car is very nice. I would say that it is in better condition than 95% of 15 year old vehicles. There are two tiny dings on the passenger rear door and a small ding on the rear passenger fender near the antenna. None of these dings scratched the paint. There is a small scrape in the paint on the rear bumper (maybe ½” x ½”). In December 2009 a lifted truck grazed the trunk in a parking lot while backing up. It scratched the trim piece above the trunk opening button and did a scuff on the paint near this. The trim piece was replaced and the scuff repaired. This is the "accident" noted on the auto check report. The paint is very nice and shines beautifully in sunlight. The front 12” or so of the hood has an older clear bra film on it, long with the front fascia around the headlamps. This was installed prior to my father’s ownership. The rear side windows, nd back window, re tinted. The 18x8 Jaguar Asteroid wheels (XJR style) are in very good shape with only a minor curb rub on one wheel. They are shod in essentially new Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires in the standard square set-up… (255/40/18 at all corners). We do not have the original 17" wheels. They had been replaced by the second owner due to personal preference. There is a matching full size spare in the trunk.
The interior is beautiful and all of the ivory leather surfaces are fantastic. The burl walnut surfaces are a lovely contrast with the light surfaces. The rear leg room is just remarkable, ven in comparison to his S55. It always made me smile to sit in the back and see the retractable walnut trays, he rear heated seats, nd the ability to move the front passenger seat’s position in case you felt the need to stretch out evenfurther. The only thing in regards to the interior is that the headliner had begun to sag behind the sunroof. My father had begun looking into options for this before his health deteriorated, ut had not located a suitable shop in our relatively small community. We have all the manuals, he radio security code card, nd original key number tag as well.
The new owner should be very pleased with the car. If you see my feedback, have sold personal vehicles previously on eBay and the feedback has always been quite positive. Local buyers are welcome to come see the car and drive it.
