The seductive curves and fine detailing of the early E-Type had long been lost on the Series III thanks to increased regulation from the US market. making it as much about compromise as it was about evolution. The XJS was conceived as less of a sports car and more of a luxurious grand touring car to replace the E-Type. The chassis was based on the XJ-6 with four wheel disc brakes and all-round independent suspension. Malcom Sayer is credited with the basic shape of the XJS. though he died during development and the final detailing was taken over by Doug Thorpe and the in-house Jaguar design department. But the XJS had a difficult gestation. Jaguar unveiled the 5. 3L V12 XJS at the height of a fuel crisis and while the styling was thoroughly modern. it was a drastic departure from the curvaceous E-type and it received a cool reception. But the XJS gradually earned an enthusiastic following thanks to the super smooth V12 or bullet proof inline-6. Continent crushing long-distance performance. a large trunk and an intimate. luxurious cabin made the XJS the ideal grand touring car. In spite of the rocky start. the XJS soldiered on and remained in production for twenty years. 1996 was the very last year of XJS production. and is one of only a handful imported with the bulletproof 4. 0L coil-on-plug inline six. The V12 may have had more cachet for buyers. but the 4. 0 liter was nearly as powerful. much lighter and exceptionally reliable. This beautifully preserved example is finished in Topaz metallic with a light cream interior and attractive brown canvas soft top. The paint is largely original and in very good condition overall. A few blemishes are visible. but nothing out of the ordinary for an eighteen year old vehicle that has covered 71K miles. The cream colored seats are in remarkably nice condition. nearly spotless and virtually free of wear. The very pretty wood trim and wood/leather steering wheel are also excellent with no sun damage or cracks. The bonnet and undercarriage are tidy. with evidence of proper maintenance throughout. The coil-on-plug version of the 4. 0L inline six is one of Jaguar’s best engines of the modern era: Powerful. reliable and smooth making the XJS a delightful driver’s car. This XJS combines classic good looks with the benefit of 21 years of development to make a reliable. comfortable and elegant cruiser. Please call 877-550-9627 for further details!
