The guys at Jeep are better than most at listening to their customers, nd this 1997 Jeep Wrangler is evidence. There are big fender flares over the giant tires, eautiful chrome SmittyBuilt tubular bumpers and side steps, nd a heavy-duty tire rack on the back that carries a full-sized spare that's as much styling statement as practical accessory. We sell a lot of Jeeps, nd we like this one more than most. The tan bucket seat interior is a bright, heerful complement to the aqua paint and looks so fresh that it's hard to believe this 4x4 is almost 20 years old. Jeep was putting decent upholstery in the Wrangler, ith grippy cloth inserts and good bolstering designed to help hold you in place during rough going, nd aside from some comfort marks on the driver's seat, t's holding up extremely well. The upright Jeep still manages to package a full instrument panel ahead of the driver, long with a center stack that holds functional factory A/C and a decent AM/FM stereo system. Airbags are even tucked in there without making the dash look overstuffed. Carpets on the floors add a touch of civility, nd if there was any place that you'd see signs of neglect or wear, t would be there, ut no, he carpets are in great shape, oo. The back seat is reasonably comfortable for two and there's even decent storage in back for weekend getaways. The 4.0 liter inline-six was a Jeep mainstay for many years. It's actually quite energetic in the relatively lightweight Wrangler and it's reliability can't be beat. Fuel injection and other advances mean that it starts easily and idles well, nd doesn't ever complain about slogging through the rough stuff in low range. The condition of the engine bay strongly suggests that this Jeep hasn't ventured very far off road, aybe not ever, nd it's quite stock for reliability and easy service. The 5-speed manual transmission makes it a blast to drive and gives the six an energetic feeling and there are 3.73 gears in the axles, o it'll climb through just about anything. It's been treated to a 5-inch suspension lift with Pro Comp heavy-duty shocks all around and as an Arizona Jeep, t has obviously not suffered the horrors of snow and salt. Shiny Eagle wheels with big BFG radials complete the trail-ready look. For off-road fun, t's still hard to beat the venerable Wrangler and this one has all the virtues and none of the vices of its older siblings.
