Description

2004 Jeep Wrangler X (TJ generation), 4-liter inline 6 engine, NV3550 5-speed manual transmission/manual 4x4; 130,xxx miles; Rubicon-style 17" alloy wheels with Goodyear Wrangler tires (about 50% tread). Rust-free, as in 'not a rusty Jeep.' I'm sure you could find a speck of surface rust on it somewhere.
New brakes all around (fully new -- rears got new wheel cylinders, spring kits, etc); new radiator this spring (no overheating -- sprung a leak in the lower tank); new tie rods, steering damper and shocks; trans oil replaced; new spark plugs/air filter/oil/usual maintenance stuff; clutch master/slave was done before I bought it, and I'm sure it's had at least one clutch job, but I don't have records. Engine starts up every time, trans shifts smoothly, no weird noises, smoke, leaks or anything else (with the exceptions noted in bullet points below).
The air conditioning is cold, the heat is hot, all lights and gauges work; the top is an aftermarket replacement but fits great and has no rips or tears; I also have a Bestop safari top for it. Mirrors have been moved from door mountings to a kit that puts them on the A-pillars, which lets you legally drive with the doors off (highly recommended). All the original stuff is there to put them back should you so desire.
Here's everything I'm aware of that you should know about:
  • Minor steering vibration between 50-60 mph (indicated -- it's actually at a higher speed since it's got bigger than stock wheels and tires, which means the speedo registers slower than you're actually going). New shocks and tie rods, so the suspension/steering is tight -- probably a wheel slightly out of balance, but I've had them balanced and it's still there. NEVER ANY TRACE OF DEATH WOBBLE
  • The transmission has rattly bearings -- either the input shaft bearing or countershaft bearing. This is one of those "they all do that" situations common to the NV3550 5-speed, and it's gotten neither better nor worse in my ownership. Everything I've read says it's nothing to be concerned about; I changed the trans oil early in my ownership and there were no metallic particles or other warning signs so I don't sweat it
  • There's an aftermarket radio with a detachable faceplate -- has a USB input too which is nice, but the head unit will occasionally turn itself off and then on again.
  • Minor chips/blemishes in the paint consistent with a 130K mile Jeep -- nothing significant or indicative of any kind of accident repair. No records of accident damage.
