I am the 3rd owner of this 1997 Z3. I purchased it on Sept. 4, 1999 from the second owner with the odometer at 27,400 miles. The production series of this Z3 (VIN last 5 digits: 02133) was sold in the US from 08/1996-09/1998 (a total lot of 16,259 vehicles).
I have the original BMW window sticker, which shows the order for the optional 17” “staggered” wheels (back wheels are wider than the fronts). From Buyer's Guide from Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car January, 2015, “With the 1997 introduction of the all-aluminum 189-hp M52 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine, the Z3 upped the performance quotient considerably. Along with the added power, staggered 17-inch wheels were added to the options list and larger ventilated front disc brakes became standard on the six-cylinder variants, which all got roll hoops behind the seats[1]. BMW widened the rear end with muscular-looking fender flares to accommodate the wider track of the six-powered car…” Note that widened rear fenders with the 17” wheel option, were the same as the standard M-Roadster (except for the wheel style), making this particular model relatively rare.
The present tires are Continental Extreme Contact DWS (fronts: 225/45ZR17, rears: 245/40ZR17, also the same sizes as the M-Roadster variant). These tires are in excellent condition with low wear.
Original suggested retail price: $39,020
This Z3 has never seen winter. It has been garaged between November and May for all of it’s 19 years. All original systems function like new: A/C, clutch, engine, power steering, lighting, suspension, auto-speed control, power windows, electric locking. It also has the complete tool kit in the trunk stowaway.
Inspection of the rear differential shows no indication of mounting damage (a known problem on the high performance Z3s).
This Z3 has an after market removable wind screen, which is installed over the top of the rear support mounts. As a result of the windscreen, the rear radio speakers were removed (grills remain).
The convertible top was replaced by New Country BMW, Harford, CT, in 2000 under the original warranty. It is in excellent condition (although there is a rattle from the top when driving over rough roads). There are no water leaks.
The original radio (with cassette tape player) was replaced with a Pioneer DEH-P2000 along with the optional AUX unit for direct audio input. Link: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/CD-Receivers/DEH-P2000
A new battery was installed in 2015 and is still under warranty.
Some minor dents and scratches were repaired over the years (all service/repair receipts are available).[1] Roll hoops did not appear on the early 1997 Z3 2.8 with the 17” wheels option.
