Overview
For sale is a beautiful 1967 Corvette Convertible. This car is not owned by us but the owner is a long time customer of ours and he has asked us for help selling the car. The current owner purchased the car in 1988 with 66,121 miles on the odometer and enjoyed it just as it was for a couple years. Then in 2001 the decision was made to do a full body off restoration on the car. The work was done by a very well known Corvette restorer in Canada named Mike Thorpe. As the car sits now it has just 67,730 miles on the odometer, meaning that in the 28 years that the current owner has had the car he has logged just 1,600 additional miles. That averages out to just 57 miles per year! When asked about it he has said that since the restoration being completed in 2002 he doesn’t even think he has washed the car! It has always been stored in a heated, secured garage with a car cover on and it is in remarkable condition. This particular vehicle is an iconic and highly desirable example of just how nice a restored Corvette can be.
History
This car was ordered with some very desirable options back when it was new and because of these options it is sure to be a very rare car and a sound investment. Of course the best option that was chosen was the L68 427cu in. 400 horsepower big block. This means it received the highly sought after triple-carb induction as well as the iconic “stinger” hood which was only available on 1967 big block Corvette’s. Only 2,101 cars out of almost 23,000 built in 1967 received this engine option. This vehicle still retains its original engine complete with matching numbers and correct date codes. Another rare option and something that is truly unique about this car is the fact that it is fitted with the M35 powerglide automatic transmission. What makes it very unique is that only 2,324 cars received the auto transmission in 1967, and the vast majority of those were small block cars. The fact that this 400hp big block car originally came with an auto makes it probably one of only a handful. The rare options do not stop there, this car is also fitted with code J50 power brakes, N40 power steering, A31 power windows, N14 side exhaust system and N89 aluminum bolt on wheels. When the car was purchased by its current owner in 1988 it had of course been painted red at some point in its life, but during the restoration was returned back to its original code 984 Sunfire Yellow which only 2,325 cars came from the factory with.
Engine
The engine in this particular car is a highly desirable L68 427cu inch, 400 horsepower big block. The casting numbers are correct on all of the major components and the stamp pad is still clearly visible and correct. The outboard side of the pad reads T1012JD, the T means it was assembled at the Tonawanda plant, the 1012 means it was assembled on October 12, 1966 and the JD means it was a L68 400hp, with an automatic transmission. The inboard side of the pad reads 7103179, the 103179 is the last 6 digits of the vin and we can tell by that number that the car was assembled in early-mid November of 1966. The engine was completely gone through and freshened when the restoration was done. Anything that needed repaired was done and as many correct numbered and dated GM parts were used. The car runs great with no issues once so ever. The carburetors have been rebuilt since the restoration was done with all new gaskets and seals. Therefore there are no leaks, the car starts easily, it will sit and idle no problem and also runs great when you get into the throttle and open up all three carbs.
Transmission and Differential
The transmission and differential were also completely gone through and rebuilt at the time of the restoration. Fresh seals and bearings were installed in the differential but other than that all of the factory hard parts remain. The transmission was rebuilt and shifts like a dream. No issues in either of these components.
Suspension and Chassis
The suspension and chassis were completely gone through and rebuilt at the time of the restoration. All of the old, cracked bushings were replaced with correct rubber units and as many GM ones were used as possible. The chassis was completely disassembled right down to the bare frame. From there, all of the parts were sandblasted to remove surface rust and grime from years of use, once down to bare clean metal all the parts were inspected for quality and correctness. Once all of the parts were deemed good enough for the build they were painted in factory correct colors and even all of the factory markings, dots and lines were put back the way they would have been from the factory.
Paint and Body
All of the paint and body work were done at the same time the restoration was underway. The body was completely stripped down to the bare fiberglass in order to make sure there was no previous body work done to the car. All of the fiberglass was in great shape and all of the factory bonding strips are visible and intact. It was then painted in its original Sunfire Yellow color and reassembled onto the chassis. All of the trim and bumpers were re-chromed at the time of the restoration and even though it is now 14 years ago the paint and chrome still shine just like the restoration was finished yesterday.
Interior
Just like the rest of the car, the interior was completely redone at the time of the restoration. If they were available GM parts were used but if not the best reproduction units were used. Everything in the interior works and functions as it is supposed to, the inside of the car looks just as good, if not better than the day it rolled off the assembly line.
Conclusion
This is one of the nicest, most correct and best optioned examples of a 1967 big block roadster you will find anywhere. There was no expense spared at the time of the restoration and since it was completed the car has hardly been driven. When it was stored it was always inside, in a heated garage, under a cover. We have over 100 pictures of the car, from just about every single angle, and even from when the restoration was done. I will try to include as many aspects of the vehicle as possible in the listings pictures but if you would like to see more or if you have any questions please feel free to email or call Jason or Lawrence at 403-255-2111. We will help organize shipping anywhere in the world but please know that the cost of shipping will be the responsibility of the purchaser. Thanks for looking and happy bidding.
