Awesome 1987 Cavalier RS Convertible! Z24 in all but name. Has 2.8 V6, 5-speed manual, F41 suspension, full digital gauges (that work perfectly!). It even has Z24 wheels! Although someone added those sometime in the past.
I just bought this car off ebay with every intention of building a Cadillac Cimarron out of it. Within a week of its arrival, I am notified by my employer that my position has been eliminated due to 'budget cuts'. Whatever, time to cut corners. And as much as I want to do this project, and as long as I have been looking for the PERFECT base car (this one, and this is NOT easy to find!), reality says this is not the time for me to do this.
The Good:
Amazingly solid and structurally sound
Engine runs like a champ! No funny noises, pulls strongly, gauges show all levels where they should be.
All records from previous owner from 2002 to 2014 (it has been sitting a bit) showing much care and attention.
Convertible top in excellent condition and works FLAWLESSLY!
Top boot in excellent condition (missing a couple of snaps).
Carfax back to 1987 shows NO funny business!
Extra set of 15 inch Fiero GT wheels (bought for Cimarron upgrade)
The Bad:
No brakes. As in, one line has burst and the other has a section missing and ends crimped. Handbrake functions perfectly.
Needs slave cylinder for clutch. Pickup is barely off floor, and doesn't totally disengage, so gears must be selected before starting engine. HOWEVER, all gears function and transmission shift beautifully.
Doors show rust in bottom (see pictures). Sills very sound.
Bad repair job to left 1/4 panel (see pictures). THICK filler, now broken. Might need replacement.
Back window very cloudy.
No factory radio. Actually, no radio (although you're welcome to the Sony head unit that was laying on the floor).
So, as you can see, definitely a project. You will NOT drive this home! Even if you live nearby. Still, the price reflects that. Not a lot of work to make roadworthy. Lots of work to be perfect, but that's why it's the perfect Cimarron conversion candidate.
