Description

This is a 1973 Porsche 914 with a very rare Eagle GT fiberglass body that looks a lot like the Ferrari Dino 246 GTS or a very little like a 904 (with the Porsche badge). This is probably only 1 of less than 10 or so left and might be one of the finest of them all because of the 3.2 Porsche engine and 915 transmission. See Clay’s eaglegt.com site for a lot more information on the Eagle GT kit car. This car used to be white and has been seen on the internet. The drive train is now all 911 Carrera Plus. This car is pretty amazing and turns heads everywhere it goes. It is really fun to drive and of course it is a Targa. Unfortunately I have 3 other Porsches and this one has to go due to a life event. If this doesn’t hit the modest reserve then I will try my other 914 or one of the 2 old 911s.

Background

This car was built by the previous owner in the mid 80s on a 1972 Porsche 914 frame using the Eagle GT kit car to drive in the Nevada Silver Race. The car was rust free, as one of the first Renegade Hybrids (Las Vegas) conversions and came with a 400 hp 360 Chevy engine. All of the rear suspension parts were reinforce welded making the axle arms rock solid. The car never made the race as the previous owner was a pilot and was assigned overseas. It sat in an aircraft hangar until I bought it in 2007. Car had less than 200 miles from probably 1987 to 2007, ess than 200 miles from 2007 to 2015 and less than 100 miles since the full rebuild. Runs great. Has not been driven in rain or snow since at least 1987. Always garaged with a new battery.

I was not happy with the very heavy PorscheChevyEagle and since 2010 have been converting it to something better. Highlights are below.

Interior - Looks very good for being from mid 80s, nd it is certainly different. Seats are in great shape with one cut on the passenger seat. Shifter housing was built to cover the cable shifter. Interior could be the next project, ut I personally wouldn’t mess with it.

Frame - Car was purchased for $9k in 2007 and had over $26k improvements at the time including no rust, he Eagle GT body done extremely well, 0” and 12” Gottis and over $6k in engine work. Previous owner spent a lot and lost a lot, ut it didn’t run when I got it. It has the heavily reinforced steel swing arms in the rear and sway bars up front. Heavy duty springs are in the rear, ar is like a go cart in the curves. The car fully loaded with the Chevy engine was weighed at 2495 pounds. I don’t know how much lighter it is after I removed the Chevy, adiator, ater plumbing, tc. It could be 100-200 lbs lighter now but only because of the oil system.

Transmission - I replaced the 914 Vellios transmission with a fully rebuilt 915/73 LSD with flipped ring and pinion and I changed gearing to better suit the car and engine e.g. 175 mph at 6000 rpm in 5th. Cruising on the Interstate at 75 is great and around 2500 rpm. Cable shifters from a Honda were used and work mighty fine. All new bearings, ynchronizers, ressure plate throw out bearing etc worth over $6000 on the transmission.

Engine – I was lucky 7 years ago and I acquired a 1985 3.2 Carrera with 85k miles but it had two broken head studs. I just finished a full rebuild with over $11k in parts including new Mahle P&C, teel head studs, ew chains, ll new bearings, ully rebuilt heads, 64 cams and reburbished rockers from Doherty, ebuilt and balanced connecting rods, RP connecting rod bolts, teve Wong chip for 91 octane gas/964 cams/straight through headers and mufflers, esurfaced flywheel and bolts. Engine mounts are extremely strong, etter than factory and require 4 bolts. The time required to drop the engine with a scissor lift is under 2 hours. Car was broken in right with great oil over 30 minutes at all revs following best leading practices with immediate new oil change.

Oil cooling - The cooling system doesn’t look that nice but is a masterwork. It includes a 14 quart aluminum purpose built tank in the engine bay, ocal 1” thermostat, 16AN (1”) aircraft hydraulic lines and all aluminum fittings, nd a huge oil cooler with fan (if required) up front. Fan has never been required. Oil filtration is via a dual flow two filter system. Oil cooling cost over $2200.

Brakes - Car had cross drilled brakes (911 fronts and 914 rears drilled for 5x130 Porsche 911 pattern. Fully rebuilt brake calipers including 911 calipers front and purpose built 911 calipers for the rear (no hand brake). New 20mm master cylinder and all 4 brake lines replaced at wheels. Worth over $725.

Wheels, ires, nd Axles - Wheels are 7.5J and 9J on 17” 996 Turbo Twist Supercup 3s with 3” spacers and 2” spacers, xtended lug nuts, tc. With Sumitomo 205/50ZR17 and 255/40ZR17 HTRZII tires so wheels and tires worth over $1500. Turbo tie rods are new. New bearings in the front. Rear axles fully rebuilt from scratch which is difficult because of the lengths required. 10mm allen bolts used throughout and is similar to the Turbo set up and worth over $880.

Exhaust - Headers and Thrush mufflers used therefore no heat, Sounds extremely good especially when on the gas. Idle is very nice even rumble. Full throttle near redline also sounds mighty fine.

Paint - Car has a few minor spots of surface rust on the bottom of the floor pan that I plan on fixing with POR15. There are mostly where the radiator water pipes ¼” bolts were welded. No rust throughs at all anywhere. All of the upper body is fiberglass and the work was brilliantly done. There is no separation or rust at any connection to the original frame. I spend significant time perfectly prepping, ully priming the body. I had a master paint it with Sherwin Williams Porsche Gray Slate Metallic topped with Clearcoat. Paint is stunning and is worth over $4k

The bad:

  • It is a fiberglass body kit car (although very impressive) so the fittings between the fiberglass parts at the door and hood to the body is not perfect. Definitely really good as you can see in the picdture, ut not perfect. It also creaks occasionally on big bumps, ut it is not bothersome.

  • No heater and no high beams

  • Doors touch the bottom of the fiberglass frame in 2 small spots

  • No rear brake

  • Car pulls to the right and needs corner balancing and alignment. I aligned it with lasers and I am really good, ut it does pull and it is not the bearings and not the brakes. Could potentially be a slightly bent front axle but I doubt it.

  • Paint has one small run in the back middle near the roof. Didn’t notice it for a few days after I got it back from the master.

  • There is a little bit of oil seepage from around the valve cover gaskets, ut I haven’t tightened them since the rebuild and I expect that will go away at the 600 mile service when all things are checked.

Bottom Line - Car has over $31k in parts alone and I will get at least that if I start disassembling and selling separately, ut I absolutely do not want to do that and won’t. Labor was well over $12k of my time, ouble or triple that if done by others, ut it was great fun over the last 8 years on weekends with the boys. Now it is time to let it go. Please ask any questions or give me a call at 773 457 1777. I really want this car to go to someone who will care and who will take care of it. Thanks for looking.
