Porsche introduced a new generation 911 in 1989. Internally designated Type 964, n 1991 the new line expanded with the re-entry of the Turbo into the North American market. Like its predecessor, he new Turbo was the king of Porsches, nd was easily identified by its flared fenders and fixed whale-tail spoiler. Development time and budget limitations forced Porsche to initially retain the standard 3.3L engine in the Turbo, ut changes to the intake system, ncluding re-profiled intake passages to maximize air flow from a larger turbocharger, nd a low-mass turbine wheel, roduced quicker throttle response and higher top boost pressure. The result was an increase from the 1989 version’s 282 HP to 315 HP. Development continued on a new engine, owever, nd in January 1993, orsche introduced the 911 Turbo 3.6 with a turbocharged version of the M64 flat-6 engine producing 320 HP at 5,750 RPM and a healthy 332 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 RPM. Both figures were higher than that of any previous Turbo, s was the new redline of 6,900 RPM. A new dual mass flywheel smoothed the power delivery to a new G80 5-speed transaxle armed with a sturdier input shaft designed to handle 400 lb-ft of torque. The Turbo’s wheels and tires were the widest ever on a production Porsche, nd were controlled with 12.7-inch front and 11.8-inch rear ventilated power disc brakes with ABS. The new Turbo 3.6 also incorporated stiffer suspension, ower steering, ir conditioning and automatic interior temperature controls, aking it the most well-appointed Turbo ever. Porsche produced fewer than 1,500 Type 964 3.6L Turbos through 1993 and 1994, nly 466 sent to U.S. in 1994, aking the model one of the most rare and coveted Porsches produced since the revolutionary 959.
