Description

I am THOROUGHLY excited to offer for a sale this beautiful 1993 Mercedes Benz 400E! It has been very well cared for, rives like a DREAM and looks absolutely stunning in Arctic White over Safran. This is a long ad, ut please be sure to read the entire thing - there is a lot of wonderful detail to cover! Let's dive right in!
Background:
Designed by the legendary Bruno Sacco, ho penned the nearly every Mercedes from 1975 to 1999, he 400E was the sleeper of the E-Class lineup. Built with the incredible smooth, ersatile and power 4.2L V8, his 400E was considered to be the little brother to the more boldly styled and slightly faster 500E. The engine made 275hp @ 5,900rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque @ 3,900rpm. But this car has GOBS of torque from near idle as well! The variable valve timing on the intake cams as well as the long intake runners enables the engine to rev up 90% of peak torque not lower than only 1,500rpm! What an engine! The 500E, nown as the "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing", as only slightly quicker than this little rocketship, ut with all of its big flares and fanfare, he 400E remained the true Jekyll and Hyde of the lineup. Its top speed was 155mph, ame as the 500E, nd was only a tick off its 0-60 times, ll with the subdued, ess ostentatious looks. Power was directed through a smooth Mercedes 4 speed automatic transmission and delivered to a very tall final gear of 2.24 which made her extremely potent on the highway.
This was a generation of Mercedes that featured incredible build quality, tunning exterior design and an incredible durable powertrain. Power windows, ower locks, -way power seats, utomatic climate control, opious leather and wood, ruise control, ower mirrors, ower sunroof and many more wonderful features graced this sleek E-Class. This wasn't a stripped down sports car, t was a true luxury touring car that craved both autobahn and Sunday drives equally.
This was a VERY special car indeed. It was a car that larger stayed low on the radar with only ~15,000 units selling between 1992-1995 (including the rebadged E420). It was a VERY expensive car brand new, ith a window sticker of ~$65,000 in 1993 dollars, his would make the car a $110,000 in 2015 money! Needless to say you can understand many opted instead for the cheaper, lower 300E.
Let's talk more about this car specifically. This is the gorgeous very low mile Southern California car, hich has spent its life in this wonderful dry climate. First delivered in March of 1994, his car stayed with its first owner until mid-1996 where it accrued typical mileage of about 15k per year. Our second owner, ocal in Los Angeles, hen used the car only a treat, nd drove her on weekends. From 1996-2013 she only received about 2,000 miles per year. Last in the ownership was another owner who looked only to enjoy the car on special occasions or for around town use. Since new, his well treated 400E has had on average approximately 3,500 miles per year only! With 400E often times being hard to find to begin with, inding a low mile, 00% rust free, alifornia car becomes even harder!
This car was serviced by only TOP Mercedes service centers such as Silver Star A.G. of Thousand Oaks and German Motors of Glendale.

The Condition and Service:
This beauty just came back from a very well known independent Mercedes service facility for a pre-sale inspection and preventative maintenance and has a wonderful clean bill of health! It has spent its life serviced by an equally well known Mercedes expert here in Santa Monica. It has been extremely loved and cared for and shows it both visually and in the experience.
Let's start on the engine and drivetrain:
-ENGINE
The engine comes to life immediately with a twist of the key. With even a crack of the throttle it, he Mercedes feels VERY torquey, mooth, oves to rev, nd effortlessly pulls away! More then a leisurely drive? Keep your foot in it and the real thrill of the engine comes to life! The engine continues to pull seemingly endlessly as you comfortably and quickly pull away from your fellow drivers. It really is a quite a special engine. The engine is free of any issues, tarts right up cold or warm and settles into idle quickly. No knocks, angs or ticks. A wonderful stunning engine! There is some minor moisture around the oil pan and such, ut no drips or wetness, ust the fairly standard old dirt/grease moisture.
Check out the engine bay pics! Clean, idy and well cared! This is NOT a steam clean special, ust a well kept, ared for engine bay. There was absolutely zero detailing done to the engine bay; not a WD40 special! Please note, he oil dipstick plastic handle loosened off the other day, new OEM Mercedes dip stick was ordered, ut has not arrived before the pictures were snapped.
-TRANSMISSION
The 4 speed transmission is in FANTASTIC shape. Tight, onfident shifts. The shifter eases into gear without any drama.
-SUSPENSION
No bangs, o rough ride, o clunks! The car is tight in corners, nd comfortable on the straights! Speed bumps and potholes are all but missing.
-BRAKES
Confident pedal, reat pressure with a firm positive stop. Great pad life left! BRAND NEW rotors and pads in the front! Loads of life left on the rears!
-STEERING
Steering feels very good with no excessive vibrations or play. The turn in is tight and nicely weighted.
Let's continue to the exterior:
-PAINT and BODY
-The paint is really quite nice! It is a 7+/8- out of 10 easily, ut I am conservative on my objectivity generally. Shiny, eautiful, rctic White paint was recently polished, inished and waxed by a highly acclaimed detailer here in Los Angeles and looks jaw dropping and soaking wet! The paint appears deep and lustrous! Flaws are minor and would represent a car that was very well cared. IE: no dents or major scratches. It is the original color and original paint. I can find NO rust on the car. Clean trunk, loors, hock towers, owl, tc. If you get right up on the paint, -2 feet away, n some light you can notice some small scratches, laws chips, tc. It is minor, nd generally you need to be less than a foot away (burying your face down in the paint to really notice it). I have tried very hard to photo any of them and I can not get my camera to zoom even nearly close enough to show anything. So hopefully that speaks to the minor nature of them. There are otherwise a few very small chips, cratches, inor flaws. There is a small ding on the rear passenger door, hotoed below and a very small ding on the trunk lid again photoed below. There is some light fading on the exterior mirror paint. But they are very minor and WELL above any expectation level for a 22 year old car.
-WHEELS/TIRES
Loads of tread remaining on the 4 Michelin Primacy tires. 90%+ tread. Great shape wheels that shine wonderfully and have only very minor flaws - some smalls scrapes, lemishes, tc. Nothing which would take away from the overall beauty of the wheels or car. The wheels are AMG style Mercedes wheels that are the only modification from stock that gives away any sporting nature to the car.
-BUMPERS and BRIGHT WORK
The bumpers are in nice shape in most part, ith a small couple inch chip on the drivers side lower lip, hich would be the only noteworthy mention, nd photoed below.
-GLASS/WINDOWS
The windshield is in very good shape, ith one very small chip, ess than a pencil eraser in size. No spider webbing, ust a small mark. The door and rear glass is wonderful shape! Clear and clean! The rear windows are tinted as well as the rear windshield. The old tint was bubbling slightly on the rear windshield and was just replaced with a brand new sheet and looks great. Brand new wiper blade (single wiper system)
Onto the cabin:
-SEATS
The Safran (German for Light Tan) leather seats are in WONDERFUL shape! The front seats are typical Mercedes quality, hen cared for. No splits, o worn spots! No tears, o dark spots! Look at the pictures - they are stunning looking! Rear seats are in great shape and look unused. There is one flaw on the rear seats, ne in which you would probably never notice unless I pointed it out. On the front side of the bottom cushion, o the panel facing the front seats, here is an inch long slice. You can not see it from any angle except if you are laying on the floor or if open the passenger side rear door and then stand up beside the passenger side front door looking down inside. I know, omplex explanation and likely silly and totally not material to the condition or value of the car, ut I saw it and need to make sure I mention it. See the photos below.
-DASHBOARD
Absolutely stunning dashboard. No cracks! The wood is near pristine, he gauges and binnacle are clear and totally functional.
-DOOR PANELS
Near perfect door panels! No stains, ears or issues!
-HEADLINER
The Mercedes W124 interiors are known for their wonderful quality and while their headliners were on great quality, he overall weight of the vinyl would lead to the glue and the vinyl separating from the headliner board. This car showed some small signs of glue failure so was replaced with the more modern and correctly color matched fabric headliner. A small upgrade that makes for increased quality and longer life to the interior. The upholstery shop did a beautiful job on what appears totally factory, ncluding the sunroof panel. NOT a cheap job!
-CARPET
VERY nice carpet in the car! No meaningful wear or stains. Floor mats are included and are nice with no tears, ut do show minor wear in color only from age.
-WINDOWS
Windows roll down and up with no issues. Good tracks and no dead rollers.
-RADIO
Original radio works well, have not tested the cassette player, s I have no cassette! I had the front drivers dash speaker crackled/cut out a little once and seems to not have happened again.
-STEERING WHEEL
The wheel is in great shape with no major defects or cracking or tears! It has a nice patina to it, ike how leather gets that wonderful soft slightly faded look and feel. A real pleasure to hold.
-CARGO AREA
Beautiful trunk, ith no stains or issues! Original spare tire, ool kit and jack all appear unused!
The Experience:
This 400E is a dream to drive. It is tight, ery comfortable, owerful and smooth. I drive a LOT of cars. Sometimes several dozen different cars per week. Some are plain-jane cars, ome are extremely high end modern luxury or sports cars. That said, LOVE this 400E. It drives absolutely fantastic and as good as any modern luxury car. It is by far one of the best cars of the last "real" Mercedes ever built and truly feels like a Mercedes should in ever regard. Its deceptively fast, ooks Mercedes Benz pretty, s comfortable around town or highway and is incredibly reliable. These were the Mercedes that gained the real reputation for quality. These W124 400E are only going to increase in value and finding a clean, ell cared one is hard to find with this low of miles, n a dry state.
One twist of the key and she is purring along at idle. Press the gas and she effortless takes off! Hellllllo torque. She feels equally as home on the highway as on the side streets and is a wonderful cruiser. It will make you wish for the Autobahn! It is quiet and comfortable at any speed. No clunks or noises over bumps. Speed bumps do not cause any noise or unsettle the car. I just took this car on a 50 mile journey last week and it was such a pleasure. Some nice tunes and a surprisingly empty Los Angeles road out in the hills made for a perfect setting for this car. Given good preventative maintenance, hese 400E they will last countless years and well over 200, 00, 00k miles without breaking a sweat. The W124 chassis and its owners are proud to show off their 400k+ odometers! This really is a very special car to drive and with the preemptive care it has received it is ready to be enjoyed for the winter and beyond!

My standard disclaimer/mantra for any car regardless of service or price: The car is sold with no warranty. You are buying a used car. Eventually every car will break, f you find one that doesn't please let me know. I do my ABSOLUTE BEST to offer only cars that are of TOP NOTCH service.
