Up for auction is this 1994 Mercedes Benz SL600 w/ 37K miles. This was part of an estate sale and had been sitting for a while before being offered to me, ruly a very special car with low miles and in very nice shape. I will try to detail everything I know about the car.
First, he car looks better in person than in pictures (to confuse you from the start most of the pictures are in bad light, here is one that shows the birght red tone of the car, he other photos are a bit washed out and don't really capture it at its best), he red paint is rare on the SL and with a tan interior this one is a standout. Even though it is over 20 years old the exterior doesn't look much different than it did when it was on the showroom floor. Aside from a couple tiny dings you'd expect the car has a very impressive presence. The hardtop has a good headliner and I doubt it has ever been off the car until I took it off to inspect the convertible top.
The convertible top is original to the car and probably saw the light of day for the first time in its life when I put it up. The top of course is excellent but the plastic center window is cracked (pictured). Please note that I am including a very rare OEM tan top w/ frame to put on the car and with this addition of a tan top on the red car with a matching tan interior will truly make this a very striking combination that is hardly ever seen on an SL R129 series.
The wheels, hough in great shape, doubt were original to the car so I am including a set of OEM SL R129 wheels from '94 (pictured). The Pirelli P Zero Nero ZR tires have good tread but have dry rot and I would recommend replacing them soon after purchase. They are fine for daily driving but to bring the car to the next level new shoes would be an easy improvement.
Brakes, uspension and steering is spot on, hen I first got the car the front end had some droop to it but after adding some hydraulic fluid it corrected itself as it should. There was a hydraulic shock dash light lit up but that has since gone away. In fact there are no warning lights anywhere on the dash (pictured, hile care was running). The car exhibits what the SL should when driving it, he car feels as solid as a tank and rides beautifully and corners with the confidence of a car half its size and weight.
The interior is in excellent shape as you'd expect of a low mileage car however if you are familiar with the R129 SL series there were some rather oddly brittle pieces that are prone to failure including the dome light assembly and rearview mirror. The dome light has some cracking but is still useable and functional and the rearview mirror just has a crack in the lower left trim corner (pictured). The sun visors are in good shape, irror covers are intact and working though one hinge is broken on one of them but it is still fully functional. Even the mounting trim surround for the visor arms are largely intact.
All gauges work, /c cycles on and the ac/heat climate control panel LCD and all buttons function as they should. The radio will need attention as it will need a code but before I installed a genuine Mercedes Benz battery it did not function correctly though it would light up but it would constantly blink so something needs to be fixed on it.
The seats are in great shape, he driver cushion has a little wear, he passenger side looks near new. Both seat functions work however the seat sometimes get confused and will go backward before going forward and the opposite, will replace the seat computers to see if that is the issue.
Door panels are excellent though the door cubby is a little loose on the driver side. The seat switches are in excellent shape though the driver side needs to be secured better to the door panel (another common issue all R129 owners know about).
It comes with the factory wind deflector attached to the roll bar.
Also please note that it comes with 4 extra keys plus the original keyless remote fob that works! All books including the owners manual and records are included as pictured and the service records are up to date which puts it right at the 37,500 mile mark. It has a proper Mercedes Benz battery.
Spare tire is new and never has been used. It comes with a complete OEM tool kit (still has some of the original plastic around it!) and the top tool in its special wrapping w/ instructions.
But before you start thinking this is a possible candidate for a museum there are a few issues that need to be addressed. First of all it runs, ounds and performs beautifully but this has been off the road for some time and will need a full tuneup, will fill it with premium gas so you will have a full tank which should flush out anything bad gas that may be in the tank or lines.
Also, nd this is a good news-bad news situation-the power top and computer work as it should however there are at least 2 cylinders leaking badly and my guess it is the main booms as there is hydraulic fluid leaking just behind the rear wheels leading me to believe that the main booms are where the problem is. The pump will empty rather quickly and I was only able to run the top once before it ran out of fluid so the leak is bad and at $15 a quart for the fluid to run the top this will need to be addressed if you want to use the soft top. The pull down cylinders and release cylinders for the hardtop work excellent.
I have had many SL R129 in different variations over the years and this one truly is a standout, specially being a V12 this is a car to look at. My biggest piece of advice to first time buyers of a 1990-2002 SL series is get a good car from the start and stay clear of cheap versions that need lots of work. This is a car I would recommend to the aspiring enthusiast, his is one to hold on to, ix its few quirks and keep it in the garage and take out on special occasions. No it is not perfect but with a little work it could be collector grade. And it is a V12, eed I say more.
Also I found a receipt that shows that the car was purchased in 2011 for $15,000, lso the code plate found on the front bumper reinforcement is in the owners manual case leading me to believe the car must have had a fender bender. In fact written on a receipt is an insurance claim for $2400 so I doubt the accident was very extensive.
So I am offering it at no reserve and hope it will find a good home. It has a clear title and is ready to go. I would not recommend driving it until it is completely checked out and all maintenance performed and fluids replaced. If you are going to invest in this, o it right.
I am sure some things have been forgotten so please email me any questions and I will be glad to assist. Thanks for looking and again please ask anything and I will be glad to help.
