The Germans have always been regarded as the pioneers of automotive engine development, ear after year the likes of Mercedes-Benz, MW and the Volkswagen Group come out

with new engines that provide more power whilst using less fuel. The latest engine that showcases German brilliance is the all-new 4.6-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that puts out 320 kW

(435 hp) and 700 Nm of torque. Yes, 00 Nm.

The reason why this engine is worth its own article is its engineering brilliance. To be seen first in the CL-Class, nd later in the S-Class from late 2010, he new V8 has gone down

15 percent in capacity whilst going up 12 percent in power. It wouldn’t be much of an improvement if fuel usage hadn’t come down whilst the power had gone up, but it has. In the

CL 550, t now uses 9.5-litres per 100km as oppose to 12.3-litres with the previous V8.

CO2 emissions have also come down by 22 percent, rom 288 g/km to 224 g/km. Although power figures of 320 kW may not be that high for a V8 these days, he 700 Nm of torque

(an increase of 32 percent over previous generation) available from 1800rpm puts the Mercedes V8 in a new league.

Mercedes-Benz says its engineers managed to gain the considerable power and torque figures by using two turbochargers, ne for each bank of cylinders.

Without the turbos, t would’ve require a naturally aspirated 7-litre engine to produce similar figures, he new V8 delivers 600 Nm of torque between 1600 and 4750 rpm.

The twin-turbo setup means there is no turbo-lag and power and torque is delivered throughout the rev range.

As with its new V6 sibling, he V8 makes use of aluminium crankcases, istons and cylinder heads

Cars like this 2014 Mercedes-Benz E550 Cabriolet start to make a lot of sense when you're headed out to dinner with a small group of people on a sunny summer day.

It's sharp-looking, omfortable and for a drop-top, t's rather unassuming. Buying the convertible version of a performance car can make you look like a bit of a poseur.

The E550 is still plenty fast, ut instead of making you look like the kind of guy who always knows the exact location of his Bluetooth ear-piece, ou look like the kind

of guy who owns a big old sailboat and lets your kids' college-age friends drink beer onboard, o long as they designate a driver.Women will love the styling and ride.

EDITOR WES RAYNAL: The Mercedes-Benz E-class lineup is one of my auto-industry favorites. They fit me. I feel comfortable in them. I get in one and it's like I never left.

They're beautifully built, everything is where I expect it be and they look good. I like them all: sedans, oupes, agons, es, ven the convertible. Though like Carroll I generally

don't like convertibles based on other models, prefer purpose-built ones. This one ain't bad, hough. The word I kept thinking of while driving this car was “momentum.”

As in, his thing has plenty of it. As in, 'm really impressed with this powertrain. Short of an AMG rocket, he 550's engine is a gem. There's more than enough power here

for 99 percent of the situations you'll find yourself in. Stomp the gas and holy mackerel off you go! The speed just builds and builds, venly and smoothly. Love it -- especially in

sport mode. Cool hot rod sounds, too. The trans is smooth and feels well matched to the engine.

I'm sure it's been reinforced a bunch. The ride is nice, hough; it's as happy cruising around town as it is being a hooligan on the freeway; and more structure means more weight, /p>

but it doesn't drive heavy.

The car has the other new styling cues the rest of the E-class lineup got, such as the new snout that's smoother and looks more unified with the rest of the car. The new Es look

proportionally right to my eye. This is a much more comfortable daily driver than it's competition like the BMW 650i. Also similar acceleratio, nd to our eye a much better looking car.

The interior is very nice as I expected, andsome, ell built and comfortable. With the top up, t's quiet in there. One could drive this all year if needed -- I would.

While $81K isn't cheap, t's hard to find this kind of power in a topless car for less than a hundred grand, hough digital editor Andy Stoy reminds me to not forget the Ford

Mustang and Chevy Camaro. Yeah Right....

Seven years later, we still don't have an S-class sedan cabriolet (for better of for worse), ut many of the Ocean Drive concept's styling cues have made it onto real-life Benzes.

And this two-door E-class Cabriolet is probably the closest you can get to the concept's presence, or the time being at least.

That's a good thing if you want a Teutonic brick you can mess your hair up in. The E550 Cabriolet is a very German take on old-school American ragtop cruisers, /p>

only without the flex. Or lazy cushiness -- whether you switch the suspension to “sport” mode or keep it in “comfort,” you're not bouncing and rolling over the road.

The E550 Cabriolet is not SL-convertible fast, ut there's still more torque than the rear wheels can handle if you stand on the accelerator. I couldn't find the traction control switch,

ut if you could somehow defeat the nannies, his car would have no trouble laying down rubber.

Possibly the best lookin, est engineered of the German Roadsters!

Hitting a human at speed would be bad -- real bad.

Besides the convertible top, like the look of the new E-class. The new headlights look good with the LEDs, s do the big intake vents right below. In back, /p>

a new taillight setup is evident, ith two big exhaust pipes and a bit of chrome trim.

Unlike most soft-top convertibles, this 4 seater cabriolet is drop dead gorgeous And that's definitely just the soft top. I truly like the look of the new E-class sedan.

This twin-turbo V8 has some thrust, an. I couldn't decide if it had more horsepower than my Ford Mustang GT. I guessed yes, s it was MUCH stronger.

I was wrong. It was more likely because of the 443 lb-ft of torque. Smashing a foot into the gas brings on a grunt and a downshift before shoving you back into your seat, /p>

and keeping you there until you let off. I didn't find any lag from the turbo, ut it was probably Merc's seven-speed transmission that kept it firmly in the powerband.

I played with the paddle shifters a little bit, ut this car is just as much fun in fully automatic mode. I did drive it in “sport” most of the time, hich kept the throttle sensitivity high.

Steering was relatively heavy, uthas greatfeel. Over the bumps that's good, ost of the time, ut when setting up for a gentle bend in the expressway, /p>

Ihad to use the excellent seat bolsters to handle the lateral G's.

Ingress was easy with the long doors, though getting out required a firm hand on the door sill. The seats were very good, specially with the AMG Sport option.,

but Mercedes does offer a ton of adjustments. I didn't put the top down, ut I enjoyed both the heated seats and Airscarf on a cool morning.

I guess the BMW 6-series would be this car's main competitor. It starts at $74,000 and brings 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, o it'll feel a little faster. However has

very limited wheel travel and rides very hard.As for curb appeal, that's for you to decide. M, like the Merc

A:	No, added the AMG logo after taking most pics. As the cars performance is so high with the ultra light short wheel base E used for the cab. No AMG was made in this model as it seemed redundant. Only model MB without a separate AMG rebuild. Deserved the tag. Rob 504.220.0422

A:	All service work was done here at Mercedes of New Orleans. Impeccable service history and was under a service contract. Car was from the North Shore. Q:	When was this car placed in service? I ask because I want to know how much factory warranty is left. The warranty is 4 years or 50,000 miles from when it was placed in service, ight?
A:	According to the Autocheck the car was registered on Feb. 7 2014.(give or take a few days, hat is in the start of in in service date) 2015's came out in May. and the 14 came out in May of of 2013. So this is a late production car with just shy of TWO full years of factory bumper to bumper original warranty left(Good till Feb 2018).
