Description

History
In the early 1990s Mercedes Benz commissioned Porsche to build a car that would become an icon. Named the 500E, it was conceived as a high performance version of the current E-Class range and built by Porsche between 1991 and 1994.
Each car took 18 days to build, the body shells transported between the Mercedes Benz Sindelfingen plant and Porsche'sRossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen, Germany. The 500E wasequipped with the Mercedes normally aspirated 5.0 liter V8 derived from the 500SL, and also shared the 500SL's front brakes. The track was approximately 1.5” wider and the front wheel arches flared toaccommodate the 8 x 16" wide alloys. The widened and lowered stance was one of the only give aways as to the car’s performance nature, returning healthy times for 0-60 of 5.5 seconds and a 160mph top speed.
Each car was hand built by Porsche and equipped as standard with many luxuriousfeatures including a Recaro leather interior (featuring heated memory electric front seats), automatic climate control, special folding rear headrests (which drop out of the drivers line of sight at the touch of abutton),and anelectrically powered sunblind on the package shelf, CDshuffler in the trunk, first aid kit, tilt and slide sunroof, and a multi speaker stereo soundsystem.
Options, of which there were few, included a hand held telephone mounted in the arm rest between the front seats.
Such was the impact at the time the 500E was dubbed "The hammer in the velvet glove" the "Wolf insheep’s clothing" by the press and even Mercedes’ usually reserved advertising lauded it as "Fire and Ice." Production over the four years for the US market was ~1500 cars, these included the later ’94 models which werefacelifted and dubbed “E500”. This car is one of only ~500 cars for its production year and a much more pure and raw version of the car than the ’94 models. Already considered a classic by Mercedes Benz themselves, this is truly a driver’s car and an absolutepleasure to drive.
What I like best is that it’s such a sleeper, virtually nobody knows what it is, it really is the wolf insheep’s clothing!

The car on offer
First delivered in Naples, Florida in 1993 by Regency Autohaus, the pre-delivery inspection is dated 12-15-92 and the service book is stamped in Florida right through to 1996 when the 500E was sold to its secondowner and made its way toCalifornia. The service history hereafter transfers to RAB motors ( first serviced by RAB 21,272 miles on 11/14/1996) a Mercedes dealership based in Marin California and each of their stamps is backed up by a fastidious file showing services right through to the third owner and onto today. The 500E was in the third owners hands for some 10 years and it was from him that I took the car in exchange for a Porsche 911. He too was based in Northern California, and again was fastidious in not only maintaining the Benz, but documenting the services which are all neatly filed in an A4 ring binder. During his time Specialized Auto Service in Santa Cruz carried out all of the maintenance, again all documented. Quite recent work includes a new fuel injection wiring harness, park/neutral switch and an oil change.
The condition of this car is incredible, representative of its meticulous ownership and it resembles a car with half of its mileage. All panels paint meter as original, the paint shines beautifully, no checking in the lacquer (common on these cars), and no color fading. There are hardly any chips or scratches, it’s almost as perfect as one could be. The gaps are typical Mercedes, the rubber gaskets and seals are supple and complete, doors clunk shut with ease and all plated items such as the door check straps look like new. It’s evident that this car has rarely (if ever) been used in rain or even inclement weather of any kind, always being stored indoors, so the anodized trim around the windows and cabin is perfect.
Open the doors and you can see the leather is supple and clean; no scratches, no marks and no damage nor wear on any of the bolsters, looking as though nobody has sat in the back seats at all. The wood is lovely, again no checking, no cracks, all switches are clear and bright with their white legends intact. The rear window electric blind works flawlessly, the sunroof and AC are also perfect and work with ease. The carpets are super clean and original and truly look as though the car is just a few years old, so too all door panels, armrests. This is a non smoker car, meaning everything is clean, bright and smells only of Mercedes Benz! The only notable flaw to the interior is the headliner which is drooping in places, it doesn't hang down, it’s just around the edges. The factory first aid kit is there and complete in its original bag (on the package tray within the compartment). The trunk is lovely, carpets again are in pristine condition, the factory CD stacker in its proper and correct carpeted compartment up on the right side. Lift the trunk carpet and the spare wheel and jack are there too, complete with factory tool roll and tools, even the factory hang tag is still attached to the jack.Lift up the front hood and you see a completely clean motor with clear and bright bottles, reservoirs and plated metal parts, again showing that the car has never seen any harsh weather. The trim and stickers are all there and complete, I can see no oil leaks or other fluid leaks anywhere. There is a sticker in the motor compartment detailing works carried out by Specialized including oil changes, brake fluid changes, transmission fluid changes, various filters etc. and the date of each one Look inside of the four wheel arches and it is again super clean, the original silver finish is smart and bright, the black shock absorbers still carry the factory stickers. Sitting up on a rack, the underside view is free from any damage and again, shows no signs of any oil or fluid leaks, the oil pan still has its original cosmolene protectant over the factory shiny black paint. The exhaust system is factory numbered and appears perfect, on the lower edge of the rear bumper is the factory VIN sticker. The best part of this car though is yet to come: driving it is by far its shining point, the motor starts with ease, sounds lovely and quiet, gears shift effortlessly and brakes pull up smooth and straight with no issue,I love the light and airycabin with itsblue-green tinted glass,all-roundvisibility is second to none. The AC works so much better than any modern car dropping the inside temperature in what feels like seconds, the seats are electric memory and work perfectly, as does the electric seat heating, not used very often here in California especially as it’s 108 degrees today! The stereo is the factory original and in the service book is the original code card, the factory CD shuffler is in the trunk. The only thing I can find missing is the old telephone that once resided in the center armrest, but not to be missed as technology has moved on a bit since 1993!
Summary
If you are looking foran investment car to not only keep but to enjoy as well, look no further, this 500E ticks all of the boxes. An iconic hand built car by Porsche ( There's even a 500E in the Porsche museum) of which only a limited number were made, less than 1500 shipped to the USA, 500 sold per year. It is enjoyable to drive and has a fastidious history, the color is outstanding and it comes with all tools, books, brochures and service history with only three owners. I have had a number of 500Es, including cars with super low mileages (19K) and I have to say this is the best of all of them, it looks like a 30k mile car.
