First of all, yes it does have 270K miles but the engine runs beautifully and the air is nice and cold. Transmission shifts as it should, Mercedes knows how to make a car.
Excellent base for your 1st Mercedes SL! Up for auction is this 1996 SL500 as pictured in probably the best color combo of silver with a light grey interior. Overall the car is in nice shape, just expect to have to do some work as you'd expect on a 20 year old car with 270K miles!
Hardtop is in good shape though it needs a new headliner. Soft top condition is unknown. Roll bar works so I know the hydraulic pump works. Condition of soft top hydraulics is also unknown.
I bought this car sight unseen and purely for parts to fix another (it was a charity donation car so you never know what you are getting) but after taking delivery, seeing it and starting & hearing it run I didn't have the heart to take it apart so I parked it and now am cleaning out so it has to go at NO RESERVE!!
Interior is surprising good, some wear on the driver seat but overall still good. Console has wear (pictured) but I can give you a replacement for free.
As usual, the sun visors were a mess so they were taken out as was the rear view mirror which was cracked as well as the dome light assembly which was in several pieces. These are easy parts to source out.
The major thing as you'd expect that this car needs is shocks and struts. The suspension on this is worn out so you will need this replaced first. Rear tires are bald so you will need a new set of tires for the car as well.
I have had many R129 SL series cars over the years and know them pretty well, this is a good car that can be a great one. There are a lot of ragged SLs out there that are not worth saving. This one is worth saving despite the high miles but again the ride quality is poor due to the worn out suspension but that is easily and fairly inexpensively remedied.
In all I know very little about the car other than it runs beautiful and you have all the elements of a very nice car with a weekend or two worth of work. No one will know you didn't pay $10K for the car!
I know a lot of people will ask can you drive it home. I am of the opinion when it comes to buying a car on Ebay it is best to check it out in person and if you like it bid on it. If you win, it is just as easy and economical to hire a shipper to deliver the car than go thru the hassle of picking it up and hoping it makes the drive home. It doesn't matter what the car is, a car whether it be used or new can break down. In this case the tires are so worn they would have to be replaced at the very minimum but again, it is just a cheap and far more convenient to hire someone to deliver it. For reference I just had a car that was not running delivered from Texas to my door for $450 (and they did it in 2 days!). Uship is a great place to get cheap car shipping quotes.
$175 deposit due within 24 hours, the remaining balance due in cash upon pickup.
Please feel free to email me any questions and I will be glad to help.
