Description

1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible that would be a great candidate for a 442 W-30 or a Hurst Olds Indianapolis Pace Car This is a very rare highly optioned 1972 Oldsmobile convertible with the air conditioning option. If you do not have the money to make this purchase according to the auction guidelines at the end of this description. then kindly do not read any further and do not bid on this car. I purchased this 1972 original code 36 Radiant Green Cutlass Supreme convertible with the intention of restoring it. I recently had some health issues. so I'm thinning out the amount of projects that I can realistically see myself having the time left to finish. I do not believe this is the numbers matching engine. however it does have the proper casting numbers 395558 for a 1972 Rocket 350 with a 4-barrel carburetor. The previous owner told me that this Rocket is a strong running engine. but it has never been fired up the entire time that I've owned this car. He also said that the mileage is original at just under 80. 00. The ignition was missing. so a new ignition was just popped in the steering column for this sale. The ignition key does not turn properly. so that will have to be addressed before the engine can be attempted to be started. This sale comes with an ignition and trunk key. but no door lock keys. I'm assuming this engine will run as good as it looks. However. several years back when I purchased another Cutlass from an elderly gentleman. nbsp;I was given a Rocket 350 attached to a turbo 350 transmission that was wrapped in plastic sitting in his garage on a wooden palate. He told me they were both completely rebuilt. I have had that Rocket 350 paired up to the turbo 350 transmission stored on that wooden crate for the last 6 or 7 years inside a shop I share with a buddy in Racine. Wisconsin about 11 miles north of Kenosha. I will offer that engine and transmission to the winning bidder for an additional $500 on top of the winning bid from this auction. The pick up of that engine and transmission will be the responsibility of the winning bidder if they would like to make that purchase. That Rocket 350 is complete from carburetor to oil pan. and should be ready to drop into any GM A-body car. The convertible for sale in this "No Reserve" auction was an original bench seat car. so there was no hole in the center hump. That transformation will have to be done by the new owner in order to hook up the floor shifter. I would recommend that the carpet be replaced. but there is a set of four carpeted floor mats. The transmission is currently hooked up to the column shifter. This car does come with the correct floor shifter. and console for a 1970-1972 Cutlass/442 model. I've done that conversion several times over the years. and it is a relatively easy process. These cars seem to be worth more with bucket seats and a console for some reason. but I sure do miss the good old bench seat days. I do have a 1972 white bench seat in decent condition if the new owner would like. I would be more than happy to include that in this auction at no charge. According to the OldsFaqs website. only 1. 25 of the Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible models were made with an automatic transmission in 1972. This classic convertible up for sale originally came from the factory in the rare code 36 Radiant Green. This particular shade of green is my favorite color. and I have seen very few over the past 40 years making this a very rare and highly sought after model. This 1972 Cutlass Supreme Convertible was made to look like a 442 convertible. but if a Cutlass Supreme is converted properly in 1972 it is virtually the same as a real 442. In the past I have read on the OldsFaqs website that in 1972 if a Cutlass Supreme is transformed the right way it is still considered to as real as a true 442 can get. Although cloning a 442 W-30 would not be possible. since a true W-30 would have an X in the vehicle identification number. The fender wells were only red on the very first ten 1972 W-30's that rolled off the assembly line in December of 1971. so all 442 W-30 convertible's after those first 10 had black fender wells. I'll give a little background on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Cutlass S. nbsp;and 442 models. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealership as a true 442. This is easily verified by the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as a separate model for the last time in 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972. The OldsFaqs website made the statement in the past that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. All 1972 442 convertible models started life as a Cutlass Supreme. since the 442 was an ordered option. Whether the car was factory ordered as a 442. or dealer installed. or a private owner installed all the 442 options. they are all considered Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 1972 442 convertibles have Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door. and all 442 hardtops have just plain Cutlass on the glove box door. This car just happened to have a Hurst Olds emblem on the glove box that someone apparently placed there somewhere over the past 43 years. I'm a huge 442 fan. so I know all the prices firsthand. I've done many of these conversions. and know how very satisfying and rewarding the finished product can be. All the money invested along the way of the restoration process will only add to the value of this car. An aftermarket fiberglass ram-air hood can be purchased for around $500. and a cut-out rear bumper for approximately $300. Let's not forget the trumpet exhaust tips for under $100. I believe for a little under $1. 00 you can have those nice new parts to install while the transformation is being done. You simply need to own a body to install those easy to obtain parts. and some knowledge of the restoration process. These early 70's muscle cars have incredible investment potential. and have been referred to as rolling bank accounts. Remember. When the top goes down. the price goes up! The 1972 442 grilles are original genuine GM 442 grilles. not aftermarket reproductions. This Olds does not have the 442 sport wheel. but the deluxe steering wheel on the car is in very nice condition. I couldn't see any cracks on it like these deluxe styled steering wheels usually have. There is also a power trunk button inside the glove box. This Oldsmobile was ordered with a great deal of options for a car from the early 70's. The factory options include power steering. power brakes. power windows. power door locks. power trunk. and a power convertible top. This convertible was ordered from the factory with the rare air conditioning option. but some of the components are missing. The majority of people didn't order A/C back in the day. since they had the option to put the top down. but at least this car has that option with the basis to hook everything back up someday if the new owner wishes. With some luck at the local swap meets in your area this convertible can potentially have ice cold a/c if the missing parts are found. These parts are also available at a wide variety of new aftermarket muscle car parts suppliers of identical replacement parts. The original dash pad is in good shape. and has an old school Pioneer AM/FM 8-track player that is not hooked up. This dash was not all cut up like was typically done to these cars back in the day. I inspected the stereo mounting area. and if the new owner is really into the originality of a factory AM/FM it would be able to be mounted perfectly in the proper position in the dash. The bucket seats came out of a 1971 442 convertible. and I believe they are the same pattern as the 1972 442 and Hurst Olds. The entire interior looks in relatively nice condition as shown in the pictures. The fenders are in very nice condition. The doors still open and close nice. but they are not the original doors to this car. I do have the original doors. and they will be included in this auction. The doors on the car have roll up windows. and the original doors have the wiring for the power windows and the power lock wiring still attached. The switch back to power windows. and power door locks will be left up to the winning bidder. I can have the front windows closed for shipping. but the rear windows have never been up while I've owned this car. From what I can tell. the quarter panels do have some bondo in them. but the wheel opening moldings are still attached. To do this car right. the new owner may want to use some cheater quarter panel replacements. The trunk lid also has had some rust repair on the lip. but that trunk lid is an original trunk lid off of an original Radiant Green 442 W-30 convertible. The original shade of the Radiant Green color can be seen from the inside of the trunk jacking instruction decal picture. The convertible top frame is in good condition. but the top will need to be replaced. It does have a nice back window. and the well liner still looks very usable. The power top motor. hydraulic lines and top cylinders. are all in place. but I have never had the top down. so I'm sure the lines will need to be bled. The original 1972 Oldsmobile owner's manual. and the rear view mirror with the map light option is included inside the glove box. These mostly complete older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find. Especially one with the Radiant Green paint code with this many factory options. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible with a Rocket 350. and the air conditioning option listed at $31. 55 in high condition. which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored. or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. $16. 60 in average condition. which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint. trim. and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! They have the lowest condition value at $11. 30 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration. but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car. but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. Why not enjoy the same looking convertible for a fraction of those prices. If the new owner decides to restore this car to the model of their choice. no one will know that this is not a genuine W-30 or a real Hurst Olds Indy Pace Car except the new owner and me. I'm not telling anyone!! This auction is just in time to buy that muscle car convertible that you have been needing for parts. or if you wanted to have a cool old classic to restore after the end of this nasty winter. When these cars are done properly they still command big dollars if the new owner ever decides to sell. I know this Oldsmobile would be great for parts. but I would like to see it brought back to its former glory rather than just being used for parts. I'm selling this cool old drop top as needing a complete restoration to be made into a nice car again. Basically. everything will need to be gone through on this car to make it right. I saw no signs of this car ever being involved in an accident. This car does not come with a title. but is free and clear of any liens. I did have the title around a decade ago when I first made the purchase. but it disappeared over the years. and I've been searching with no luck. I never placed this car in my name. so I have no way to get a duplicate. Therefore. I'm just going to consider this auction as selling a parts car. so bid according to the situation at hand. The winning bidder will receive a Bill of Sale in their name. I know titles can be obtained through different sources in each various state around the country. Obtaining a title will be left up to the winning bidder. I do believe a clear title can be obtained rather easily through the Broadway Title Co. in Bangor. ME. That can all be done online with a little research. Also I do know several states don't even use title's on these older classics. Those states will simply register these classic cars by the vehicle identification number. The original floors and trunk floor had some novice repair work done. but does look solid for the most part. The trunk was coated with spatter spray. and does have a new trunk mat that carries a full size spare tire. and a detailed original jack. jack stand. bumper mount. and crow bar. In my opinion from everywhere I looked this frame is in good condition. There is a set of four raised white lettered steel belted Cooper Cobra GT Radial tires on the front. and Road Hugger GT Radial tires mounted on the rear on 14 inch Super Stock II wheels painted in a color similar to the original Radiant green body color of the car. Those wheels are mounted with chrome lug nuts. and all four wheels have the bolt-on center caps. and all four beauty trim rings. There is a full set of wheel opening moldings. and the correct Cutlass Supreme stainless steel body side molding. and stainless steel rocker molding. The rocker panels are in good solid condition on both sides. Naturally all of that Cutlass Supreme chrome should be removed to make a proper 442 recreation with some nice white or black W-30 stripes to make a proper looking 442 W-30 convertible. A lot of the chrome is still very usable on this car. or in drivers quality condition. In fact there aren't really any hard to find chrome pieces that I can think of that might be missing. This ragtop has a 10-bolt rear-end. but I am not sure of the gear ratio. Whatever this classic convertible sells for in this no reserve auction is a win/win investment. If you double click on the main picture then all the pictures open up on the computer screen. and you can scroll through all the pictures from left to right. This Oldsmobile is an investment that I believe will continue to rise as these cars have shown to consistently escalate in value. These GM A-Body muscle cars are the finest handling cars I have ever driven. This car is for the guy or girl who had one or that always wanted one back in high school. but don't want to pay the outrageous prices to own one. It would also be a nice father and son project car to bond as a family unit. 1972 was the last year of the Cutlass Supreme/442/Hurst Olds convertible. so this car may be for the high end restoration shop that wants to do a frame off restoration and bring this highly optioned car up to live auction standards. I do know that dealers know the easiest way to obtain title's for these older classics. There is no finer muscle car on the planet in my eyes than the 1970-1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible. Here is a prime opportunity to acquire your dream car at a nominal price. or to have all the parts to finish a restoration of a 70-72 Cutlass Supreme or 442 that you may already have. This car is being stored safely indoors out of the elements. The deposit will need to be paid within 24 hours. and the balance is due within 72 hours prior to the pick-up or transport of this car. Whatever funds that are received will be going to finish up another project that I ran out of funds to complete. That is why I am allowing this car to sell for whatever it brings. I know my descriptions can be a little long winded. but I try to list everything I can think of when I write a description. so every potential bidder can make the most informed decision prior to placing their bid. If you feel I may have left anything out please ask as many questions as you like. I pride myself in answering every question in explicit detail with the utmost honesty. What you see is exactly what you get! Ask questions and you will receive honest accurate answers. I'm a motivated seller. so this hard to find highly optioned Radiant Green classic muscle car convertible is being offered at "No Reserve" on a 3-day listing. It will sell to the highest bidder on Sunday evening at 5:00pm Pacific. 7:00pm Central. or 8:00pm Eastern time depending on your location. Thank You for taking the time to read and view my auction!!! Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!!
