Description

1971 Oldsmobile SX Convertible! 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass SX Convertible Very Rare: 1 of 357 - Numbers Matching - Original Documentation You are viewing a privately owned 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SX Convertible. "SX455"Classic Cars Online is helping the owner with the presentation and listing of this fine vehicle. You will be purchasing this vehicle directly from him. This vehicle is a true "SX" convertible which can be proven by the original documentation. For anyone unaware of the SX model. these cars are very. very rare examples of GM muscle. The production numbers for this two-year only (1970 & 1971) model are about 1/3 of the total of the highly collectable 442 models. The SX is every bit a 442 except with a generic VIN # so the insurance companies didn't know there was a Rocket 455 big block engine under the hood. The 1971 SX Convertibles are the rarest with only 357 produced. Who knows how many are still left. Brief history of the car. This vehicle was placed into service on 3/30/71. It was a GM Executive Car in Lansing. MI for the first 3. 09 miles and then sold to Jim Allee Oldsmobile in Dallas. TX on 4/23/71. Jim Allee Olds sold the car to the first retail purchaser. James H. Lowe from Carrollton. TX. It was then sold to L. G. Wood of Orange. TX in September of 1974. The last owner prior to the current owner was Ken Clough of Granbury. TX. The current owner purchased the vehicle in April of 2011 and had it shipped up to Ohio. Please read and view all of the 107 pictures listed in the photo gallery. Click on each picture to make them larger. Would you buy a car on eBay with four pictures and one paragraph of description? NO. That is why at Classic Cars Online. our listings will go over and show every area of the vehicle that is up for auction. Bid with confidence! - Written by the current Owner - Body & Paint: The paint color on this vehicle is called "Sienna". It is the correct original color for this vehicle. (Factory paint code "67". ) All of the body panels are original with no body filler anywhere. No rust. very solid. It has spent the first 40 years in Texas before coming to Ohio in 2011. Car has been repainted at one time but I'm sure when. I assume it was not that long ago since the paint shows very good with no fading or checking. It could use a quick wet sanding and buffing to deepen the shine. The panel fit and alignment are good with all the correct gaps. A new white canvas convertible top was installed in the Spring of 2014 along with a new well liner and a new glass rear window. (White is the correct top color. Factory code "A". ) The convertible top motor. hydraulics cylinders and hydraulics lines were all replaced in the Spring of 2011. The top works flawlessly and looks excellent. The convertible top bows and bow padding are in great shape. A new white convertible top boot was purchased in 2012 and is excellent condition with no signs of wear. Chrome & Trim: I'm thinking that most of the chrome and stainless steel trim is original and they are all in very good condition. There are some minor scratches that can only be seen close up. A few pieces of trim do have some dings that could be straightened. The rear bumper has the correct exhaust cutouts that were stock with the SX package. The front bumper filler/header piece is broken. (See photo # 21) Interior: The interior still retains the correct "Trim 17 . Code 987" white interior. Most of the interior is still original. I believe the seats were redone at one time. They are in pretty good shape but there are two small tears on the sides of the front seat in the lower corners. (See photos #45 & #51). I have placed two small pieces of white tape on these spots to avoid further tearing. The foam padding and seat springs are original with some wear to the driver side of the bench seat. All of the factory gauges are in working order. The HVAC bezel is faded. I imagine it was from the heat of Texas. There is also some minor heat marks on the rearview mirror. but it is original. The dash is in very good condition. There are no cracks. The original standand steering wheel was swapped out for the more desirable Olds sport wheel. (The original wheel will go along with the sale. ) Some of the options on that this vehicle has are: Power Steering. Power Brakes. Tilt Wheel. Air Conditioning (Not currently working. missing the belt for the AC compressor. The compressor spins freely and is not frozen up. ) Interior Lighting Group that consists of courtesy lighting when car doors are open. A light with slide on/off on the rear view mirror. glove compartment light and map light above the stereo on the dash. Interior Hood Lock (not working). Tinted Glass (all original). Three Speed Automatic Transmission. Lower Body stainless trim with side marker lights (all working). Upper Body Pin Stripe. The original radio is not installed. but I had a new Clarion AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo installed in 2011. The original front dash speakers are in good working order and sound good. I had two new speakers installed in the trunk of the car under the convertible top well liner. Nothing was cut up when the radio and speakers were installed. Engine Compartment: Engine compartment is clean and very stock looking. It has not been redone and has the original look to it. Other than a newer electronic ignition. all parts are still stock looking. Some were swapped because of the normal wear and tear such as the battery and alternator. The rest looks to still be correct and original. (Power Steering Pump. Water Pump. etc. ) This Rocket 455 engine is original with matching numbers to this SX convertible. (See Photo #94) It is sporting a Rochester Quadrajet 4 Barrel Carb. The radiator is in excellent shape with no signs of corrosion and no leaks. All hoses and belts were replaced in the spring of 2011. See the "Mechanical" section for more details. Glass: The vehicle still has all its original tinted glass. It does have a new rear convertible glass window which was replaced with the new top in the Spring of 2014. There is a minor scratch on the rear driver side window. All windows go up and down effortlessly. Wheels & Tires: New BF Goodrich Radial T/A 225/70R14 raised white letter tires where installed last spring. Along with new valve stems and a high speed wheel balance. Nitrogen filled. The tires are mounted on the original 14" SSI (Super Stock I) wheels with original stainless steel trim rings and center mounting caps complete with the Oldsmobile emblems. Wheels are very clean. The original trim rings have some very minor scratches. but can be buffed out if desired. Trunk Compartment: Exceptionally clean with all original trunk pans and no rust. There is a new trunk mat and spare tire cover that gives the trunk a nice clean fresh look to it. The original jack and jacking tools are there and in there correct place under the spare tire. The spare tire is used but has ample tread. It is also mounted on an original SSI wheel. Chassis - Frame & Undercarriage: Please view the undercarriage photos. From these photos. you will see how nice and rust free this vehicle is. The frame is solid. straight. clean and free of any past rust problems or issues. Remember. the vehicle has never seen snow or salt and most likely not much rain considering it had been in Texas for the great majority of it’s life. It still has all its original floor pans with no rust. You could not tell the car is 44 years old by the way the underbody looks. Check out the photos that show the bottom rocker panels and bottom of the door seams. The can still see the factory seams and spot weld dimples. Nine times out of ten. people selling a car would not talk about or take any photos of the underside. The undercarriage tells you a lot about the car. that is why we took a few pictures of the bottom. Mechanical: Drive Train: Engine: Original numbers matching Olds Rocket 455cu. in. with a Rochester 4 barrel Quadrajet carburetor. The engine runs great and does not burn oil. tick. or smoke. An electronic ignition. Davis Unified Ignition (D. U. I. ) distributor made by Performance Distributors was installed along with full tune up in March of 2011. Transmission: Original numbers matching Turbo HydraMatic TH400 / Three-Speed Automatic Transission. (See photo #96 for Trans ID tag. The VIN is also stamped into the side of the transission's case. ) This bulletproof transmission is working great with solid shifts. It doesn't slip. jerk. or leak. The front and rear seals were replaced in August 2011 along with new gasket kit. new trans filter. 10 quarts of new trans fluid. vacuum modulator. TH400 detent solenoid & new connector. Rear End: I believe the rear end gear ratio is still stock. (2. 56:1) The 90 weight gear oil and gasket were replaced in April of 2012. There is no problems with rear end. It doesn't grind or slip. Brakes: Factory power brakes. The front and rear received new wheel cylinders. Front brakes were redone with heavy duty brake shoes and hardware. There are no problems with brake system. The brakes are in excellent condition. They do not leak. pulsate. fade. or pull when the brakes are applied. Suspension: Factory power steering. It has gas filled shocks. The front coil springs and rear leaf springs all in very good condition. The vehicle sits with the correct looking stands and drive even better. No issues to report. No funny noises or problems. It has always been well maintained. Exhaust: The true dual exhaust system is in great condition. It has the original stock exhaust manifolds that feed into MagnaFlow stainless steel mufflers. The exhaust exits in the rear via trumpet tips under a 442 style cutout rear bumper. (Cutout rear bumpers were standard with the SX's. ) The system is in excellent condition and sounds awesome. No problems. Manuals and Paperwork: With any classic car. original paperwork and documentation is very important. This vehicle comes with the original Dealer Copy of the Shipping Order Form and also the original Dealer Invoice with all the codes and options that shows the "Y79" Performance Package which translates to the SX 455 option. So yes. This is a real and true 1 of 357 SX convertibles built in 1971. Very Rare. The vehicle was originally a GM executive's car with original documentation stating this fact. The vehicle also come with a 1971 Owner's Manual. along with all the maintenance records from the date I received the car in April of 2011.
