The naysayers will tell you that the American muscle car died after the 1972 model year. In part, hey're right, s compression ratios dropped like your 401k has in recent months; the Feds mandated big, gly bumpers, ore and aft; and gasoline prices shot to 50 cents a gallon almost overnight in November 1973 with the first Arab oil embargo.

However, he Big Three kept pumping out cars with big engines, nd yes, ome cars weren't as handsome as pre-'73 designs, ut one of our favorite 1973 designs is the Oldsmobile Cutlass. Add the Hurst package to it and you have a very desirable muscle car, ne rarely seen even at car shows.

The Hurst/Olds turned many heads that year, s Linda Vaughn rode up and down drag strips across the country in one with her other Hurstettes. Just 1,097 Hurst/Olds models were built from Cutlass S models at the now-defunct Lansing factory.

From a performance standpoint, he 1973 Hurst/Olds was no slouch, ith a 455-cu.in. V-8 with W30 innards. Hurst changed the camshaft and called it W45. There also was the W46, hich was for cars without air conditioning. The W46 had a longer, 46-duration cam, igger valves and a 3.23 rear axle, nstead of the W45's 3.08 cogs. All the cars had the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400, legendary performer that had a 3,000-rpm stall-speed torque converter and the Hurst Dual-Gate shifter. All the cars had power front disc brakes and the Oldsmobile Rally suspension, hich included front and rear anti-roll bars, eavy-duty shocks and stiffer coil springs. Hurst Performance claimed 0-to-60 mph times of 6.5 seconds back in the day: not bad for a 4,000-pound car.

The basic Cutlass S models were shipped to Hurst's Detroit facility, nown in those days as the "Northend," and were available in either black or white. There, urst technicians added a black or white padded vinyl top and custom quarter windows much smaller than those in stock Cutlasses, Mylar "H/O" etching in each quarter window, old side, ood and deck paint panels and color-coordinated striping. The hoods featured a non-functional set of rear-facing louvers. Also added were a flexible hood ornament, nterior and exterior identification and the aforementioned Hurst Dual-Gate shifter. The Hurst cars rode on Super Stock III wheels mounted with BFGoodrich GR60-14 tires; the 1973 models were the first to employ these radials.

Optional Hurst items included Super Air Shocks, urst Loc/Lugs, console-mounted digital tachometer and a modular burglar alarm system that was wired into the horn and lights. Although photos of prototypes so equipped have surfaced throughout the years, o sunroofs were installed on customers' cars; this was before the T-top rage, hich began with the 1975 Hurst Olds.
