The third-generation Oldsmobile Super 88 was introduced in 1957 and only produced for two years. It remains an icon of style and mid-century design that is remembered fondly by Oldsmobile enthusiasts and casual observers alike.

This beautiful example is believed to have lived most of its life in California and by the mid-1990s the car had come into the care of Ivar Lejuenes, a collector based in Monrovia, California. Still remarkably preserved at the time, the car caught the attention of Bob Schmidt, a longtime restorer of American post-war cars who also served as the collection manager for Glenn Patch, a real estate developer who earned his fortune in magazine publishing. Rather than focus on an individual marque, Mr. Patch chose to center his collection on American convertibles produced in 1957 and, to that end, instructed Mr. Schmidt to search far and wide for the best available examples.

After Mr. Patch purchased this Oldsmobile in 1998, Mr. Schmidt conducted a rotisserie restoration. The engine, carburetor, brakes and transmission were disassembled and rebuilt. All chrome was refinished, the interior was reupholstered in leather and the exterior was stripped bare and repainted in the period GM color Jade Mist.

Following Mr. Schmidt’s exacting work, this beautiful Oldsmobile joined the remainder of Mr. Patch’s collection of 1957-year automobiles in Arizona, where it was displayed. In 2007, Mr. Patch opened his ’57 Heaven museum in Branson, Missouri, and the car was moved to that location. The building he chose once hosted the Dick Clark American Bandstand Theater and Mr. Schmidt served as the museum’s curator. Within the museum’s climate-controlled environment and among its 1950s-era displays, this stunning Oldsmobile was exhibited until the museum’s closure in 2009.

In October 2009 this Super 88 was acquired by the previous owner, who freshened and serviced the car as needed. Equipped with Oldsmobile’s legendary Rocket V-8 engine, this car delivers 400 lbs./ft of torque at only 2,800 rpm, illustrating why the motor’s superlative title is so deserved. It is desirably optioned with power steering, power brakes, power windows, a push-button Wonder Bar radio, dual exhausts and whitewall tires. Displaying just over 37,300 miles, this Super 88 convertible is ideally suited for the most discriminating concours d’elegance and classic American car shows. The current owner acquired the car in 2011 and it has resided in his preeminent collection of American and European cars, largely regarded as one of the best in the United States.

Please contact me for any more info you would like, and if you need any additional photos, I am happy to provide them. We have several other listings currently for other 50s American cars.
