1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible-442 recreation

1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible "442" Clone being sold with "No Reserve" This Oldsmobile up for auction is the perfect candidate for a 442 W-30 convertible recreation at a very affordable price. I know all the real Olds guys know how hard it is to find a True Blue Cutlass or 442 convertible. I purchased this 1971 original code 26 Viking Blue Cutlass Supreme convertible in West Virginia in a package deal with a 1970 original code 28 Twilight blue authentic 442 convertible about six or seven years ago. I restored the 1970 to show car status for a gentleman in St. Louis that became one of my closest friends. He will have his incredible 442 convertible at Olds Nationals this year in Brookfield. Wisconsin. That will also be a great weekend for anyone who needs Oldsmobile parts. There will be many vendors selling hard to find Olds parts. This 1971 was missing the engine. transmission. front end. and the doors. A few years back I had my personal muscle car mechanic come over and take the Rocket 350 out of a grandpa driven 4-door Cutlass I purchased with 88. 00 miles that ran like a wristwatch. He placed that engine and transmission into this 1971 Cutlass Supreme convertible. It has the proper casting numbers 395558 for the 1971 and 1972 Rocket 350 engines. We never started this engine after the swap was made. but it did run like a beauty when it was in the car it came out of. therefore this would not be considered a numbers matching engine for this car. but the proper Rocket 350. From what I remember he hooked up everything except the air conditioning. This is not a Rocket 455 like the decal on the air cleaner says. That was simply the only air cleaner I had to place on the engine for this sale. The steering column that came with this car is a floor shift steering column with a very nice 442 four spoke steering wheel. and additionally the speedometer is a floor shift speedometer with 40. 05 reading on the odometer. I never asked. nor could I verify that mileage to be original on the body. With all this being said. there was no hole in the hump. so that will have to be done by the new owner in order to hook up the floor shifter. This car does come with the correct shifter. and console for a 1970-1972 Cutlass/442 model. The complete interior looks in relatively nice condition as shown in the pictures. The front buckets seats were both professionally reupholstered. so they should be nice and comfortable for many years to come. There is a brand new set of four blue carpeted floor mats. I recently had some health issues. so I'm thinning out the amount of projects that I can see myself realistically having the time left to finish. The fenders and the core support came off of another 1971 Cutlass Supreme. The core support is in nice condition. but the fenders could use some lower patch panels. but they are both attached at the bottom. The 1971 442 grilles are original genuine GM 442 grilles. not aftermarket reproductions. The hood is for a base model 442 with the vented portions both in good condition. I do believe a fiberglass ram-air hood would be a nice addition. The doors include a very nice pair of original sport mirrors with the drivers side being remote controlled. These doors were just placed on this car for the sale. and came from a nice clean Viking blue 1972 convertible that has yet to be restored. I believe the paint on the rear quarters and the trunk lid to be the original Viking blue paint to the car. A whale tail spoiler is always a nice addition to these 70-72 models. They can be purchased in nice reproductions. and look just like the originals for a cost of around $225. The guys that I put this car deal together with said they got this car in Kentucky. but it had an Ohio salvage title. There was a dealer reassignment paper from several Kentucky dealerships attached to the Ohio title. so I believed them. I just took the title with all the paperwork to the Wisconsin DMV last week. so it does have an open. clean. and clear Wisconsin title in my name for this sale. Those guys had plans to make both of these cars sweet again. but they were liquidating their collection somewhat as I am doing now. I'm a huge 442 fan. so I know all the prices firsthand. I've done many of these conversions. and know how very satisfying and rewarding the finished product can be. All the money invested along the way of the restoration process will only add to the value of this car. An aftermarket fiberglass ram-air hood can be purchased for around $500. and a cut-out rear bumper for approximately $300. Let's not forget the trumpet exhaust tips for under $100. I believe for a little under $1. 00 you can have those nice new parts to install while the transformation is being done. These early 70's muscle cars have incredible investment potential. and have been referred to as rolling bank accounts. Remember. When the top goes down. the price goes up! The top frame sitting in the well is what I received with the car along with the power top motor. the hydraulic lines and top cylinders. Those are all included in the trunk with what appears to be the original California boot. You simply need to own a body to install those easy to obtain parts. and some knowledge of the restoration process. I am including the massive 1971 Oldsmobile Chassis Service Manual. so whoever ends up winning this car will know exactly what and where every part to this car goes. This auction is just in time to buy that muscle car convertible that you have been needing for parts. or if you wanted to have a cool old classic to restore during the end of this nasty winter. My belief is with some hard work it is possible to have a nice summer of top down cruising in a Viking Blue recreated 442 with white W-30 stripes and a white convertible top. When these cars are done properly they still command big dollars if the new owner ever decides to sell. This Oldsmobile would also be great for parts. but I would like to see it brought back to its former glory rather than just be used for parts. I have far too many projects right now and nowhere near the energy I once had. so I'm selling this cool old drop top as needing a complete restoration to be made into a nice car again. The options include power steering. power brakes. and a power convertible top. Basically. everything will need to be gone through on this car to make it right. This convertible was ordered from the factory with the rare air conditioning option. but some of the components are missing. The majority of people didn't order A/C back in the day. since they had the option to put the top down. but at least this car has that option with the basis to hook everything back up someday if the new owner wishes. With some luck at the local swap meets it could potentially all be hooked back up again if the right parts are found. These parts are also available at a wide variety of new aftermarket muscle car parts suppliers of identical replacement parts. The original dash pad is in good shape. and has an old school Jensen AM/FM Cassette player that is not hooked up. however this dash was not all cut up like was typically done to these cars back in the day. I inspected behind the stereo mounting area. and if the new owner is really into the originality of a factory AM/FM it would be able to be mounted perfectly in the proper position in the dash. I saw no signs of this car ever being involved in an accident. but I just noticed the right front stabilizer link is missing. I think those can't still be purchased at any local auto parts store for under $20. I believe the rest of the suspension is in good condition. and this car has rear air shocks. The original trunk floor will need some repair as seen in the pictures. but the trunk does carry a full size Super Stock II spare wheel with a B. F. Goodrich Radial T/A. In the event of a flat tire once this grand old convertible is back roadworthy. since there is an original jack. jack stand. and crow bar. that mishap can turn into a complete looking car again in a matter of minutes. There is a full set of four B. F. Goodrich Radial T/A raised white lettered steel belted radial tires with P225 60/14 inch tires on the front. and P235 60/14 inch tires on the rear mounted on 14 inch Super Stock II wheels painted Code 26 Viking Blue to match the original body color of the car. There are 20 brand new chrome lug nuts on all four wheels with the bolt-on center caps. and all four beauty trim rings. There is a full set of wheel opening moldings. and the correct Cutlass Supreme stainless steel body side molding. Naturally all of that Cutlass Supreme chrome should be removed to make a proper 442 recreation with some nice white W-30 stripes to make a proper looking 442 W-30 convertible. A lot of the chrome is still very usable on this car. or in drivers quality condition. In fact there aren't really any hard to find chrome pieces that I can think of that might be missing. The body has some typical rust on a 44 year old car. but in my opinion from what I saw the floors and frame all look in decent condition. There is a highly sought after factory 12-bolt positive traction rear-end. that looks factory original with the rear sway bar. Those rare parts look like they came factory ordered with this model. They are crucial items to have for making a car as close to a real 442 as possible. What you see is exactly what you get! These mostly complete older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find. Especially in Viking Blue!! The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible with a Rocket 350. and the air conditioning option listed at $30. 60 in high condition. which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored. or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. $14. 90 in average condition. which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint. trim. and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! As shown in the pictures I would consider this Olds Convertible currently valued in between the average and low condition. and could be rated much higher with some hard work. They have the lowest condition value at $10. 65 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration. but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car. but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. Why not enjoy the same looking convertible for a fraction of those prices. This Oldsmobile is an investment that I believe will continue to rise as these cars have been consistently proven to escalate in value. These GM A-Body muscle cars are the finest handling cars I have ever driven. This car is for the guy or girl that always wanted one back in high school. or had one and wants to restore one instead of paying the crazy prices to purchase one already finished. This would be a great father and son project or for a high end classic car restoration shop that knows the values of all the parts on these cars. There is no finer muscle car on the planet in my eyes than the 1970-1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme or 442 convertible.
