Black carpets and Black convertible top. Fully Restored Show Quality. 260 cu. in. OHV Ford V-8 engine. 4-speed gearbox. Rootes Archive Centre Trust Certificate. VIN: B382002093LRXFEIntroduced in 1959. Sunbeam’s new Alpine with its stylish tailfins put the company on the two-seater sports car map and market. Prior to driving an Aston Martin. James Bond can be seen driving an Alpine Roadster in the first Bond movie Dr. No and his first on screen car chase. Although extremely good looking and certainly as quick as its rivals from MG or Triumph with its four cylinder engine. what the Alpine lacked was a bit more grunt/power. Rootes Competition Manager Norman Garrad was aware of the Ford V-8 engines that Carroll Shelby had fitted to AC sports cars to create the Cobra. Garrad’s son Ian. Rootes’ West Coast sales manager in the U. S. approached Shelby. Shelby oversaw the creation of the prototype “Tiger” taken from the 1925 Sunbeam land speed record car. The prototype Tiger was completed in the spring of 1963 and powered by the 260-cubic inch version of the small block Ford. as used in production Falcons and Fairlanes. Lord Rootes gave his okay. and 3. 00 engines were ordered from Ford. Between 1964 and 1967. production of Mark I Tigers reached 6. 50. with about half of them were unofficially designated Mark IA. based on the Series V Alpine. A Mark II version with the 289-cubic inch Ford engine was introduced in 1967. but only 633 were built before production was halted. The Chrysler Corporation had bought the Rootes Group. which made the Ford engine no longer allowed and sadly Chrysler’s smallest V-8 sadly would not fit. This Mk IA Tiger was manufactured on May 13. 1966 and built to North American specifications. Recently this Tiger Roadster was treated to a no expenses spare restoration to its current exceptional show/concours standard. the cost of which has far exceeded this Tiger’s asking price. No stone was left unturned. the outcome being a Tiger Roadster MKI A that is superb in absolutely every respect. This Sunbeam Tiger Roadster MK I A is complete with its tool roll. owner’s manual and certificate from the Rootes Archive Centre Trust to acknowledge its authenticity. A wonderful car to show or drive and certainly a welcome addition/invest to any collection that is sure to appreciate with little chance of depreciation if kept in its similar condition.
