GORGEOUS SPCNS COBRA WITH 302 CID V8 STROKED TO 331 CID CALIFORNIA ISSUED VIN THIS GORGEOUS COBRA REPLICAR WAS BUILT IN CALIFORNIA. IS GREAT FUN TO DRIVE. AND GETS THE KIND OF LOOKS AND ADMIRATION NORMALLY RESERVED FOR HI-END EXOTIC MAKES LIKE FERRARI AND ASTON-MARTIN. IT'S 90% OF THE FUN OF AN EXOTIC AT 10% OF THE COST OF OWNERSHIP!IMPORTANT NOTE: EBAY'S DATA-ENTRY REQUIRES A 17-DIGIT VIN for 2000 model-year cars. HOWEVER. as a Special Construction "Kit Car" the California-assigned VIN has only 8-digits. So we had to list the year as a 1969 model year (after the body style) as an over-ride as ebay requires NO VIN for pre-1981 cars. The car is NOT titled as a 1969. but rather. as a 2000 model year car. HIGHLIGHTS: A 302 cid Ford block was stroked to 331 cid. It idles at approx. 1600 RPM with its high performance cam. Performance is very brisk. and all passengers are impressed! With the fuel cell mounted over the rear axle. the trunk is quite large for a car of this type. This is very much a "deluxe" Cobra replicar. with a wider stance. longer body. and much better interior execution than most Cobra "kit" cars. BACKGROUND. the car was built in California and there is quite a bit of receipt history dating back to the 1980s. We have been told that Kellison built the kit. Though we see no Kellison markings anywhere. the unique die-cast grilles. wide stance. and slightly longer than usual Cobra-style body all suggest that it likely is the highly respected Kellison kit. Though there is a "Shelby American" plate on the firewall (shown in image strip at right) we are not sure what the actual "Shelby" connection is with the car. if any. the plate may have simply been placed on the firewall by the builder/previous owner as a cosmetic item. In 2007. the California owner decided that he would apply for California's "SB100" kit car emission exemption. Under SB100 legislation. California annually exempts up to 500 kit cars from emission requirements. The application was approved. and the car was issued a VIN number and a VIN sticker/plate recording the car as a 1988 SPCN (Special Construction) "Cobra 1969". REMOVABLE WIND-DEFLECTOR & SIDE WINDOWS. are included and are shown at right. ADDITIONAL NOTES. the 1600 rpm performance cam set-up was designed for high performance and delivers. It's impossible to know what the new owner will value most in the performance vs. boulevard cruiser trade-off equation. but modifications to suit most tastes are not difficult. Everything we tested prior to listing worked fine. with these minor exceptions: the tach operates only to about 2000 rpm (we are told that this is due to the installation of the MSD ignition) and the fuel gauge is inoperative owing to the fact that the over-axle fuel tank had no sending-unit. Other than that. we only noted a small power steering hose leak. Every effort has been made to describe and picture this classic Cobra replicar accurately. though human oversight is always possible. After its California completion and VIN assignment. the car was purchased by a Florida enthusiast and titled with the California issued VIN and "SPCNS" maker identification with "Cobra" as the model. but with 2000 as the designated model year. Georgia followed Florida's titling details of the car. and it is currently titled in Georgia as a 2000 SPCNS Cobra Convertible. As it does not meet the owner's Georgia county requirements for emissions. it has the Georgia title. but has not been registered. However. only 13 Georgia counties require emission testing. and the car could be easily registered in the other non-emission testing counties. So be sure to check with your DMV on the smog. titling. and registration of "SPCNS" ("kit" or "replica" cars) before bidding or purchasing.
