Description

1939 Hillman Minx in incredible unrestored condition.

It has only covered 27000 miles in its 76 years. For 72 of those years it was owned by three generations of the same family. Its very near completely original, as never been welded or repaired, or does it need it.

The underside has never been undersealed etc. and is as it left the factory. The leather interior is also extremely good. It even has the original carpets, eadlining and exhaust (except the tail pipe). It has been in the UK all its life.

The condition is amazing but the remarkable story of its life explains how it has survived so well. It has ALWAYS been kept dry. As a new car it was hidden away during the War and remained that way until 1947. It was used infrequently in the 1950’s before its last outing for many years in 1961. It completely missed the UK's MOT system until it finally re-emerged in 2012. With minor work it passed with no advisories!

This car is the final pre-war UK Minx made for just one year. It has an alloy radiator grille and the boot opens (unlike previous Minxes) and is flush with the bodywork. It’s a deluxe model which meant (blue) leather upholstery, sunroof and two windscreen wipers. The windscreen cranks open almost horizontally and makes for fun driving in the summer, specially with the sunroof, indows and leg vents open too!

The full and detailed history of course comes with the car, ncluding a letter from the grandson of the original owner.

It has ALL paperwork – original buff log book with ONE stamp and several petrol rationing stamps! The original receipt for £175, pecifying the lovely (mostly original Aero Blue paint) and having King George VI stamps on it. The owners manual as well as carburettor, lectrical and tyre manuals. Also a lubrication chart and official late 1930’s Hillman motor company service manual for garages. Original registration number and in fact the original Hills of London plates.

In my ownership I have refurbished important details such as the brake shoes which were relined and the cable brakes checked and greased. Oil and filter changes naturally. The original brass radiator was flushed through and the carburettor rebuilt. New door and boot locks were fitted by replacing the barrel only (ie. retaining the original handles). I also attended to the sluggish semaphore indicators and the fuel gauge was repaired. Everything now works as it should, ven the original mechanical clock on the dashboard. The tyres have been replaced by the correct Dunlops supplied by Vintage Tyres of Beaulieu.

The car preserves all its original features including all the usually lost pieces like the starting handle cap, heel jack and spare wheel well key. All badges and chassis plates are of course original. No part of the bodywork has been drilled for mirrors or accessories. The horns were fitted by the original owner so I have retained them. They could be removed without a trace if required. The paint is very old and there is age related localised flaking but these areas have been touched-in with expensive hand matched cellulose paint. As a result it still looks remarkably fresh.

The car was featured in a magazine on its “discovery” in 2012. A copy will be given to the new owner.

I have enjoyed it to the full, aking it to local shows and just for fun on sunny days. It always draws a crowd and drives well even in heavy traffic.
