1978 VOLKSWAGEN WESTFALIA POP TOP CAMPER VAN. Restoration is about 95% complete, uns well, rives great, ransmission is nice and tight, hifts great. Odometer is 25,200 miles, ut I assume it has rolled over at least once, nd with 38 years of regular driving it is most likely 225,200 miles. I bought this van from a friend that has owned it for the last 15 years. This is a great place to start off because there is only a few details to finish to have a really nice rig. I have spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours on the project, ut am just plain need the money out of it and so have to let her go. This is not a show van, nd was a daily driver for all of its life. All that is left to do on the interior is to repair the pealing and chipped formica on the cabinets and add a new stereo. Paint is abouttwo yrs old, he van has been garaged since the paint job and has been on Non-op registration since I bought it about 9 months ago because the previous owner had it registered in a county that did not require smog testing. (Van is not current on the smog test and will need to be done by new owner if it is to be registered in a state or county that requires smog testing.) I will give you all the details about the vans condition that I know in this ad, ut please ask all the questions you want before you place a bid. You are welcome to come and look the van over before you buy it. (write me a note oneBay to set up an appointment. The van is in Sonoma county, alifornia.) Please only bidon the van if you intend to pay as I really need to have it sold.
Here is all the new stuff with some details about the work: EXTERIOR: Paint is two years old and is not an expert job, ut is quite nice. The fiberglass top is in good condition, ad new rubber seals about three years ago and is painted a nice off white. The body is green on thelower half, nd a nice light grey on the mid sectionbetween the pop top and the green lower section. The Pop Top Tent is brand new three window and was just installedabout one month ago. The Tires are brand newYokohama super van tires (4) and the spare is inserviceable condition. Rims are repainted in the light grey color like the mid section of the van. The bumpers are repainted to the same light grey and reinstalled with Stainless steel bolts. The rear bumper is a heavy duty aluminum bumper instead of the original cheap flimsy one. All light lenses are new. All exterior bolts and screws were replaced with Stainless steel when they were reinstalled after painting. The Windshield is only a few months old and has the darker tinting on the upper six inches of it with a new euro rubber gasket. The two rear side windows and the rear hatch window were also removed during painting and reinstalled with new euro rubber gaskets. The front door windows and the crank out side windows were not removed during painting. The crank out windows work well and the screens are intact. The front doors, ack hatch, nd engine hatch rubber seals are all new and were just installed a few months ago. The cargo bin was removed during painting and reinstalled using all stainless steel bolts/screws and the tie down eyes replaced with stainless steel eyes also. The undersides of the van have surface rust only with the exception of anapproximately 1 inchdiameter hole on a weld seam behind each front tire in the wheel well areas, nd the typical hole in the battery pan. I will provide a gallon ofundercoater with the sale that I have not hadtheme to spray on, ut this would be a very good upgrade to make. ( Ihad planned on pressure washing theentire underside and spraying with undercoating)
INTERIOR: All of the upper and lower bunkcushions are in great shape but would benefit from a cleaning with an upholstery attachment on a rug doctor. (I will try to get around to cleaning them before the van is picked up.) The front seats are nice replacements that are very comfortable and plush. The passenger side seat is no longer a swivel seat. The front floor boards were wire wheeled, rimed and prayed with white (Raptor) bed liner that is supertough and easy to just sweep right out. The metal part of the dashboard the is right inside thewindshield was repainted and all of the plastic vents are new. The stereo is old and needs to be replaced. The flooring in the main cabin area is the very expensive Marnolium that is the same stuff they used in airstream trailers. The cabinets are in great condition functionally, ut there isa lot of pealing and chipped formica that needs to be reworked. The sink, ater tank, rey water tank and stove all function well. There is presently no house battery (extra battery to run things off of so that the main starting battery isnot run down while camping.) Im not sure if the inverter works or not because ofthere being no house battery, ut the 110 AC power works great. Therefrigerator is the top load type and seems to get a little cold when the van is plugged into 110 AC power, ut it probably needs a charge to get cold enough for use. It is one of the 12 volt/110 volt refers, nd does not run off of propane. At any rate if the refer cannot be repaired to get cold enough it would be an easy thing to rig one of the 12 volt devices from one of the plug in coolers to take over the original system as the refridge itself is in goodcondition. All hardware for upper, nd lower bunks works fine, nd the Pop top hardware is all very functional. All four door panels I made from templates out of nice light colored panels as seen in the photos. Comes with a snap in screen so the rear hatch can be left open while camping. The only hardware that is still needed is the trim pieces for the front doors that I have yet to find and will leave this for the new owner to buy and install. Oh yes and the curtains are all functional, ut an ugly brown so I would plan onreplacing these. A few days of work will finish the entire interior to have her ready to party.
Mechanically: Engine runs great, ransmission is tight and shifts very well. I just recently took out the shifter and put in new bushings and greased it all and found that the shifting was even better and smoother. Although the engine runs great it has not been smog tested as is required in most areas of California. The smog testing and any parts that may be required to pass smog testing will have to be completed by the new owner. I do know that the EGR valve was not installed last time theexhaust was done but Idon't know why they did this, nd it does not seem to affect the engines performance. One of the axle boots is cracked and I have bought but not installed new boots for all four of them. The Engine was rebuiltprofessionally aboutforty thousand miles ago according to the previous owner/friend of mine. It feels to me like the motor mounts and front transaxle mounts may need to be replaced and I know that they went through fuel filters quite frequently, o the fuel tank probably would benefit from removing and cleaning it the next time the engine is out. In the mean time it is very easy to access and replace the fuel filter. (they cost about six bucks each.) I have bought and amwaiting on delivery of new distributor cap, otor, condenser, oints, lugs, ires and coil and will install them as soon as they arrive which should only serve to make her run even better as they are all very old and ready for replacement. The alternator is brand new with about 100 miles on it. The enginecompartment is pretty clean, ut the underside of the engine andtransmission are pretty greasy. The heater ducting is not all hooked up but it looks like it is all under the rear seat....it is a pretty easy job to hook it up. ( I will do it before the van ships if I have time, ut if not the new owner will be responsible for this.) The emergency brake cable needs to be replaced and it is include in the sale, ut not installed (one more thing I just did nothavethe time to get to, ut is not too big of a deal to replace.)
Overall: The van is prettyclose to being ready for a fun summer and can be driven now ifyou live in an area thatdoes not need a smog test, therwise the new owner will be responsible for the smog testing. There is just enough left to be completed to learn the vehicle and make it your own.If you are at all familiar with the wonders of the VW worldyou will already understand that they should only be owned by those that are willing, ble and enjoy tinkering about about with them to keep them running smooth.I WILL WORK WITH YOUR SHIPPER If YOU LIVE OUT OF THE AREA, UT THESHIPPING IS NOT INCLUDE IN THE SALE.
