The BMW E39 generation M5 (2000 to 2003 model years) is the pinnacle of M5 evolution. It was born from an era of BMW design that was both classic and modern. The E39 M5 was significantly more powerful, dvanced, nd modern than its E34 predecessor, et was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrain van Hooydonk's awkwardly styled E60. It was also the last M5 offered exclusively with a manual transmission. It was and still is the supercar that does it all. It can accommodate four adults in comfort, eward its driver with astonishing performance, et is refined enough for civilized daily driving, hile delivering over 25 mpg if driven conscientiously. 2001 and later model years are the best, aving received Angle Eye's, ED "CELIS" wave taillights, wider navigation screen, hicker M steering wheel, nd numerous technological and safety updates.
History
BMW's are like airplanes. Age and mileage are relevant, ut the most important element is proper care and maintenance, specially with an E39 M5. I am selling this 2002 example on consignment for the owner of SCR Performance, high-end BMW performance shop. It is a known car within the Colorado BMW community. He has consistently maintained it at or above BMW standards and service intervals. He is also a racing instructor and performance driving coach who has refined its capabilities with upgrades that add significant performance while not compromising the original DNA M GmbH Division engineer's intended.
This M5 was originally purchased at Co's BMW in July of 2002. It has remained in Colorado for its entire life and has never been exposed to winter conditions. It was exclusively dealer serviced at Co's BMW for its first 5 years and 50,000 miles. In 2007 a fellow BMW Car Club member purchased and maintained it in accordance with the Lifetime Maintenance Schedule also known as Old School Maintenance. This included 5000-mile oil changes, egular brake fluid, oolant, ransmission, nd differential fluid changes. All work was done at Co's BMW or SCR Performance. He replaced the stock 8" wide front Style 65 Wheels with a second set of 9.5" wide rear wheels. This square setup significantly improves turn-in and reduces the understeer induced by the stock staggered wheel widths. The original 8" front wheels are included with the sale. During his stewardship the post-cat O2 sensors, hermostat, ront tie rods, nd motor / transmission mounts were also replaced. In the spring of 2010 the owner of SCR Performance purchased it with 67,000 miles and continued the Old School maintenance. In addition to regular fluid intervals he replaced both pre-cat O2 sensors, he fuel tank vent valve, nd cleaned the crank case ventilation system (a preventative measure to reduce carbon build up). At 71,000 miles he installed a KW Variant 3 coilover suspension with custom fitted Vorshlag camber plates. At 76,000 miles he installed Centric rotors with Stop Tech pads. At 79,000 miles he mounted Continental Extreme Contact DW tires. In preparation for the sale he installed a new battery and gave it a fresh oil and filter change. All work was completed by SCR Performance. It is a turn-key car, t needs nothing.
Impressions
Gaze at the E39 M5 and subtlety is the theme. BMW did not find it necessary to over-style this car; its capabilities are spoken through action not appearance. Those in the know will appreciate M bumpers, trunk lip spoiler, uad exhausts, nd one of BMW's best wheel designs - shadow chrome style 65's. Subtlety is not a bad thing; the classic lines of the 3rd generation 5 series are fluid, ynamic, nd appealing from every angle. Titanium Silver Metallic paint accents design cues like hood creases that flow from the kidney grills into the aerodynamically shaped M mirrors and door creases that flow from the front wheel arch through the door handles into the taillights. The chrome shadow Style 65 wheels make the boldest statement with multi-layered pitchfork spokes leading to deep-dish barrels.
Open the door and sporting luxury is the theme. Fine materials abound. Copious portions of soft black Napa leather coat nearly every surface. It has that fantastic leather smell that all BMW's of this vintage have. Plush M5 stitched factory carpet floor mats meet your feet. The individual Bruyere Club wood trim is a richly textured red wood that adds dimension and lightness under an individual anthracite alcantara headliner coats the ceiling like a dark night sky.
Sit down, urn the key and a 3-spoke M steering wheel lowers into place in front of exclusive grey Motorsport gauges. The M bits remind you of what makes this car so special, he S62 engine. Fire it and the S62 settles into a note that is unmistakably V8, ut clinical and refined compared to American muscle. The sounds emitting from are the best part of the M5 experience. Once the oil is warmed up (indicated by the variable redline tachometer) it screams to 7000 rpm through eight individual throttle bodies in a chaotic symphony that can only be made by the combination of high compression and normal aspiration. The M3 gets the most of the credit for BMW's motorsport exploits, ut the S62 engine is one of the BMW's most winning competitive power plants. It has won sports car, T, nd prototype championships for multiple teams in the U.S. and abroad. The absurdity of a thoroughbred racing motor hidden in a refined luxury sedan is the recipe that has made the M5 so successful arcing back to the very first M car, he E12 generation M535i.
On the road the E39 M5 is a bundle of contradictions. It really can do everything. It can be civilized or frenzied, ubdued or raucous. It's a luxury sedan that can be driven like a racecar (Google Ring Taxi). Some big BMW's require the driver to mind their mass to corner with grace. It can be done, ut you have to dance with them, ver mindful of the physics at play. The E39 M5 defies those physics with nimble precision and athleticism that should not be possible in a 4000 lb sedan. Turn-in is crisp while plentiful torque and a long wheelbase allow rotation in mid-corner and control through the exit. This example's Conforti tune improves throttle response, lattening the curve and reducing throttle-by-wire delay. The square wheel setup and finely tuned KW coil over suspension add more potency to the highly capable platform. The fine tuning and upgrades perfectly negate the stock M5's shortcomings without compromising its nature.
With great power comes great responsibility, t must be unleashed judiciously. My civilized side appreciates the M5's refinement, ut it brings out my inner hooligan in spades. The soundtrack of the S62 is marvelous yet unobtrusive. I long for a louder exhaust, ut then I couldn't hear those eight individual throttle bodies snarling in proportion to my right foot. Each red line pull brings smile-invoking giggles and if I'm honest occasional doses of fear. It was the "Fastest saloon car in the world" when released. It may not retain that title at present, ut it is still very fast. That comes in handy when the occasional stop light drag race presents itself. To my surprise the challengers were not boy racers (they knew better), ut middle-aged men in mundane luxury sedans (ahem - Lexus). Each was safely dispatched with ease (and no need to endanger a clean driving record) to the tune of that wonderful S62 soundtrack. When restraint is in order civility returns with heated seats, remium sound, nd ample luxury appointments. It is the supercar that does it all -- a bundle of contradictions!
Condition
This M5 has benefited from impeccable stewardship. It has always been in the hands of enthusiasts and treated with exceptional care. All functions, ccessories, nd mechanical systems work exactly as they should. There are no fluid leaks or drips. There is no VANOS rattle or lifter noise. The transmission, ifferential, nd wheel bearings are quiet with no vibrations. The only nagging mechanical item I can find is a noisy accessory belt pulley. The M5 will certainly need more preventative maintenance and repair's as is the case with any E39, ut it is sorted and ready to drive coast to coast.
The exterior condition is indicative of its fair weather use and indoor storage. The Titanium Silver Metallic finish is still brilliant with no glaring defects. There are no significant chips, ings, cratches, r clear coat lifting with the exception of two areas. The lower front bumper cover has a hairline crack above the right fog light and there is a small area of scuffed paint at the joint of the forward right front fender and rearward portion of the right bumper cover. Both are pictured on our website if you are reading this elsewhere. The leading edges of all surfaces are protected by clear bar, hich is not compromised or faded. The wheels have no curb rash, aint chips, r bends. The seller replaced the left fog light due to a crack in the original. The headlight glass is crystal clear and the angel eyes work.
The interior belies its age and mileage. The leather is soft and supple to the touch. There are no rips, ears, r odors. The only major flaw I could find is wear on the driver's seat back bolster, ut much less than is common at this age and mileage. The sealing foam (it looks like weather stripping and is removable) between the extended leather dash cover and windshield makes a little noise over rough roads. There are no blown out pixels on the instrument cluster or display screens. All door lock and window regulators work. All power functions and seat heaters work. The heat blows warm and the air condition blows cold. The navigation system DVD's are dated, ut it works. Overall it is in exceptional condition.
Proper care and impeccable stewardship have preserved this M5. It is a highly desirable example that stands out in a rapidly shrinking population of worthy E39 M5's.
