The rotisserie restoration of this solid Georgia car included a base coat/clear coat repaint in original code “ZZ” Anniversary Gold Metallic. This one-year-only, odge-only hue was used to commemorate Dodge's 50th year of automobile production. The bucket seat interior received new door panels, ront and rear seat covers, nd convertible top boot cover and well liner in the correct “P4Y” color of light olive metallic (gold). The vinyl material is N.O.S and was supplied by Legendary Interiors, ho also provided the new white convertible top and tan carpets. The instrument panel, teering wheel, nd interior trim have been restored to as new condition. Interior options include a console mounted tachometer, M/FM radio, ariable-speed wipers, nd an electric clock. The exterior trim consists of N.O.S., e-chromed, nd excellent original pieces that appear as new. The front fenders mount the “Polara 500” insignias that are specific to this option package. The side chrome features the swirled inserts that came only with the “500” package. The re-chromed front and rear bumpers mount rare optional bumperettes. The door-mounted inside adjustable rear view mirror and radio antenna were N.O.S. pieces. The tinted windshield and tinted side glass were new at the time of restoration and remain unblemished.
Although this Dodge convertible was originally equipped with a 383 engine, t has been re-powered with a 426 Street Wedge. This motor has been built using a 1964 date coded block, opped with newer “452” casting cylinder heads. These 440-sourced heads have larger valves and ports than the 1964 heads. Additionally, hey feature hardened valve seats and larger combustion chambers to better cope with today's unleaded fuel. The intake system is a 1962 Chrysler 300H dual inline unit complete with its correct primary and secondary Carter AFB's. The carbs mount reproduction “football” air cleaners. The hydraulic cam shaft is 440-Magnum-spec. The ignition system consists of a Mopar Performance electronic distributor, lectronic voltage regulator and concealed ECU.
The correct dual-exhaust manifolds dump into a 2 ¼ “dual exhaust system with Hemi-spec mufflers that emit a satisfying rumble. This car is equipped with a 3-speed cable-shifted Torqueflight 727 automatic. This rebuilt transmission is a 1965 unit that uses the improved slip-joint style of drive shaft. The Chrysler built 8 ¾” rear end is a 1969 Charger unit that features one-piece axles that simplify rear end and rear brake maintenance. These upgrades appear as stock but feature improved service and reliability.
The front suspension has been rebuilt with police-spec tie rod ends, all joints and front sway bar. The front torsion bars were new Mopar Performance Hemi-spec pieces. The rear suspension has been upgraded with Super Stock leaf springs. The brake system has been improved to power-assisted 11” drums with a 1967-style dual circuit master cylinder. This Dodge rolls on Uniroyal Tigerpaw P 215/R75 whitewall radial ply tires mounted on wide 14” x 6 ½” Chrysler station wagon steel rims. The rims carry the correct bright spinner wheel discs that were part of the “500” package.
Again, his is originally a 383-powered convertible that has been upgraded with a 426 engine and H.D. brakes and suspension to replicate the available 426 Street Wedge package.
