Classic Beauty Head Turner - Just in time for Summer!
This 1965 Rangoon Red Mustang Coupe Notchback with a black interior was comprehensively restored by the previous owner and has been turning heads ever since. This car is road ready so drive it as is or add a few personal touches / upgrades and take it to the shows.
The car has a 289 C Code original engine with automatic transmission. I purchased this car in 2004 from the restorer in Arizona (the car started life in California and spent the rest of its years through 2004 in Arizona) and shipped it to Massachusetts where it has been garaged, egularly maintained, nd only lightly driven since. When I purchased the car in 2004 the odometer registered 113,000 miles. It now has 118,600 miles so clearly I did not drive this car very much in the years I’ve owned it. The cars starts, uns, nd drives well. The car is in good running order. The mechanics of the car are good and have been maintained by only one mechanic since it arrived here in Massachusetts.
The body is solid (believed to be all metal - no plastic parts or bondo). Grill, rim, tc. are all in good condition (Exceptions: chrome tail pipes have surface rust as a result of heating and cooling. Replacement is straight-forward but I wouldn’t do it until the mufflers need replacement. There is a limited amount of rust on the rear bumper). There are a few minor blemishes in the paint and chrome but overall the exterior is visually impressive. The paint job was well done and included a clear coat which still has a terrific shine.
The interior is in very good condition. The headliner has no tears or sags. The upper dash has been covered with a custom made pad (loose fit - just a lay-on cover that can be removed and tucked away with no tools or effort when you go out for a drive) to protect it from the sun and is in excellent shape with no ripples or cracks. The carpet is good.
The dashboard / instrument cluster is in very good shape (some gauges have been replaced over time) and the plastic, hrome, nd painted surfaces all look great.
The car includes AC. This was a dealer installed option in 1965 and its paint, hrome, nd parts are all operable and in good shape like the rest of the dashboard.
The upholstery is in good condition (front seat is worn but has no tears). When the car was restored all of the upholstery was replaced with a vinyl / fabric combo in a pattern that mimics the OEM mustang pattern. When I purchased the car the owner noted that he chose fabric instead of mustang vinyl due to the Arizona heat. The upholstery was well done (I believe the upholstery was custom made). During the restoration the owner replaced the original front bucket seats with a folding armrest / bench front seat. The bench front seat was a rare option in 1965 and appeals to many people who have seen or ridden in the car. Real Mustang buffs appreciate this rare touch. However, f you would prefer buckets I do have a pair of original bucket seats and will include them (along with many other misc. spare parts) in the sale at no charge. In that way the next owner will have the option to re-install the buckets and restore the upholstery in the future if he chooses to do so – something I had planned on doing but never got around to.
Under the hood everything runs and has been well maintained. The special valve covers and breather add a special flare without going overboard. The battery and fuel pump are new and service is up to date. The suspension is in working order but the mechanic has noted the ball joints are due for replacement soon.
This car is a head turner. My wife is a professional photographer and used it in photo shoots over the years. People always make comments at red lights and in parking lots – it’s a definite conversation starter. I used the car mostly to drive to client meetings (I am an architect) where it always impressed. I wish I drove it more – road trips, allies, tc. but the time escaped me. We are preparing to build a new home and I won’t have room for a specialty car like this so its time to find this pony a new home.
Summary: You are buying a 1965 Ford Mustang sedan with an automatic transmission and a 289 engine. This car is being sold “as is.” Buyer is responsible for pick-up / delivery.
