1970 Monte Carlo Convertible
This is a project that has been in the works for over 20 years but with other projects underway it will be another 20 before I would finish it so I’ve decided to sell (the wheels are not included and will come with 15” steel rollers). The car was accurately changed over to a convertible using all GM parts like they intended to build but didn’t. Note that the car is being sold as pictured in this auction and the forum is only intended to show the conversion process.
If you collected all the donor parts and car to duplicate this car as it is you would most likely pay more than the starting price of this auction and it wouldn't include the 100s of hours needed to do the work. I started with a 1970 Monte Carlo which was from Oregon and is one of the most rust free bodies you will find. The trunk/floors and common rust areas are solid save for a few very small patches required in the rear quarters and passengers side fender. For the conversion I used a 1968 Chevelle as the donor car utilizing the unique convertible components. I have seen many of these cars converted over the years and most had cut corners and changed the lines of the quarter panels. I made sure that the convertible frame bracing, windshield header, firewall torque boxes, rear wheel well housings, side inner structure, deck panel and bracing were utilized. All were welded at the factory seams or as close as possible with butt welds. Car also comes with the correct convertible transmission cross member.
I took great care in preserving the lines of the Monte quarter panel tops by reshaping the sail to meet the Chevelle quarter panel top sections. The panels were butt welded on both the inside and out and seam sealer applied to the inside to prevent moisture from finding a pinhole that could bubble the finish. I applied some paint to the butt welds to prevent rust while in storage. No filler is present in the upper quarters so you can see the work that has been put into the car. The goal was to get the metal work as close as possible prior to any filler applied. The deck lid lines fell into place nicely with very consistent gaps. When welding in the factory convertible frame bracing the frame square was checked and was well within factory tolerance so the car should track well.
There is no engine or transmission with the car (originally equipped with a 350 and Auto) but still retains its original 12 bolt open 273 rear end and F41 bracing. I have the original protect-o plate showing its factory build information. I was setting it up for a BB with Muncie transmission and center console. I cut the tunnel for the transmission console shifter hump but re-tacked it into place not knowing if the next owner would want a manual or not (shifter hump not included). It can easily be cut back out or welded up. To accommodate bucket seat and center console factory reproduction brackets were installed.
The correct convertible rear seat is with the car as well the Chevelle side panels all of which need to be recovered. Included with the car are two pair of interior sail panels (green & black) which can be grafted with the Chevelle panels to complete the Monte Carlo pattern. Also included is the rear convertible quarter window glass which is factory tinted like the door glass and convertible top rear glass. To be show quality the glass will need to be polished to eliminate light scratches being 40 plus years old. The top alignment is great and drops right into place at the header. When closed the top sits low in the rear tub as the correct convertible wheel well tops were utilized. A power top motor and cylinders come with the car but will need servicing or replacement. The car comes with the correct power top switch and wire harness. Convertible rain gutter is included.
The grill, front bumper and passenger fender has some light collision damage. The dash has some cracks and was cut for a larger radio. It may be able to be repaired put probably would be easier to find a replacement. Front coil springs have been removed. The car does not come with wheel well trim or lower moldings. The hood and center console are junk and intended for mock up purposes only so plan on replacing them. There is some final weld grinding that will be needed if you want a factory appearance. The car is loosely mocked up and is not complete and will requires full restoration. In my opinion the car is ready to be torn back apart media blasted in preparation for body work. Again the ET Classic 5 wheels are not included in this auction and the car will come with 15” steel rollers for transportation.
