1974 Triumph TR6, Excellent Condition

Gorgeous 1974 Triumph TR6 This is an exceptionally nice TR6. Please look at a few others available for sale then look at this one and decide for yourself. There is a good chance mine is the better car. I will do my best to accurately describe the car for you. History: The previous owner (Howard) had passed away about two years ago and I bought the car from his son. His dad had owned the car for over 20 years. The beloved car was driven regularly but very infrequently and very short distances (i. e. . around the block) as Howard got older. There are a few clues to indicate that the car was driven very little over that last 10 years or more. The tires looked almost new but they were manufactured in 1998 and dry rotted. Also. I found a little note book (in the car) of the type some people use to write down mileage. It has a notation dated 3/15/05 that records 10 gallons of gas bought at mileage 18. 25. When I bought it. the odometer read 18. 08 meaning that less than 400 miles had been clocked in over 9 years. This comports very well with the son's description of the recent history of the car. Condition (when I bought it): I wasn't looking for a TR but I happened to see this car on Craigslist. I had owned one when I was 21 (I'm 54 now) and have always loved them. I decided to go see the car and. on the way over. I expected that I was wasting my time since most of these cars are basket cases. When he opened the garage and pulled the cover off. I gasped. It was really nice. I drove it and could tell the carbs needed rebuilding. the rear end had some looseness/noise and the steering was loose. but the car was solid with no rust. shifted well and the engine felt powerful. The interior was in really nice shape. The wood dash was intact but was showing its age. The top looked almost new except for a small hole where the son didn't know how to properly lower the top and pinched it. The electricals were dim or slow and would need to be sorted out. The body was very straight and rust free. I still have found no rust on this car. It has an excellent. older single stage paint job. which is old school and true to the original. It is painted its original Triumph color -- Pimento Red. It looks amazing. I bought the car because the things that are important were in great shape. It needed a few mechanical and electrical things addressed but the car was obviously well cared for and the "bones" were excellent. Condition (Now): From a really good starting point. I did the following: Gauges -- removed the wood dash and all instruments and gauges. Took the gauges apart and refurbished and cleaned them. Replaced all the instrument panel bulbs. Wood Dash -- Removed. stripped off the old veneer. Replaced it with teak veneer. No stain. just the natural wood color. Finished it with probably 7 or 8 coats of Spar Urethane varnish (satin). Fresh Air Hoses (under dash) -- While doing the dash and gauges. I noticed some of the fresh air hoses were cracked and broken. I replaced them with new ones. Paint Finish -- Wet sanded the entire car and had it professionally compounded. buffed and waxed. Wheels -- I had all the wheels sanded. primed and repainted. They are like new. Tires -- Installed brand new (4) Hankook tires 205/70/R15. Slightly fatter than the originals. Rubber/Seals -- Replaced the door window scraper rubber and the windshield rubber seal. Both worked but the edges were starting to dry rot. Work performed at the Shop: Electrical -- Go through all electrical issues and address any deficiencies. Everything works as it should now. except for the turn signal indicator (turn signals work though). Tachometer -- Replaced bad drive gear. Works great now. Carbs -- Rebuild. tune and replace spark plugs. Rear End -- Rebuilt the differential. replaced both axles. replaced all 6 universal joints. replace transmission rear seal. Everything is now nice and tight with no noises coming from the rear end. Steering -- Replaced the steering rack mounts/bushings and upper steering bracket. Steering is nice and no longer "sloppy". Exhaust -- Complete new stainless steel exhaust system from the header all the way to the rear. This was sort of unnecessary but I decided to do it anyway since the exhaust was getting old and it had to be removed and replaced anyway to get to the rear end work. It sounds and looks great. Deficiencies (Keep in mind I am very picky): The bumpers are in very good shape and straight. The chrome is not show quality and showing some age. See pics - this does not detract from the beauty of the car. Same comment regarding the chrome on the luggage rack. Dash board turn signal indicator light is not working as I write this. I think I crushed the bulb when I reinstalled it. May have it fixed before you read this. Seat belts work fine. but the webbing is original and faded. Carpets are in good condition. clean and presentable but show a little wear. They are nice enough that I wouldn't recommend replacing them. Just trying to be forthright. I'm too picky for my own good. If I were to continue to keep the car and improve it. I would probably remove and refurbish the 4 rubber bumper guards. They are in good shape there are a couple of small gouges in the rubber that could be filled. See pics. As mentioned previously. it has a small pinch hole in the convertible top from being opened improperly. Otherwise the top is excellent. The stereo is an old 8 track. Vintage and cool. but not great sound quality. The windshield has no cracks but it has several small pits from age. Overall Condition: Excellent. You will have a hard time finding a nicer example. Solid rust free chassis. Beautiful paint and bodywork. Very nice interior. Gorgeous new teak dash. All instruments and gauges work. It is a very strong running car and. I know this sounds crazy but. very reliable. All the cylinders have been compression tested and are great. It starts up every time and is a blast to drive. The exhaust note is a symphony and is like no other car out there. It will bring a smile to your face. British Car Specialists in Marietta did most of the mechanical and electrical work. An astute potential bidder pointed out to me that almost zero of these cars can be truly "rust free" and directed me to a few key places to inspect and photograph. I found (and I think you will see from the pictures) that the car is indeed very solid from a corrosion standpoint. The floor pans. frame. "T" brace. rockers and trunk all look really good and solid. I did. however. find a small patch of rust in the drivers side floor pan that appears to have been repaired sometime in the past. You can see it in the pictures. I want to thank that bidder for asking me to scrutinize this further because I do want to represent the car fairly. I hope this explanation and the additional pictures in the web album are helpful. It is fairly represented. beautiful. solid and mechanically very sound. but it is not a concourse level car. That being said. you would be proud to own it and I believe it is better than the majority of examples for sale out there. I have had a couple of potential bidders call and it is great to actually have dialog about the car. you get so much more info compared to emails.
