Description

I'll keep it short and sweet. And as accurate as possible. So here we go. Up for sale is one of dad's toys. He passed away and mom does not want to finish or keep the car. 1957 Pontiac Chieftain. 2 door. 347 V-8 Tri-Power motor and an automatic transmission. Original exterior colors of white and coral. Interior is now black and coral. The car is an attention getter! Original Tri-Power set up was removed by previous owner for two reasons. One being his kid was allowed to drive the car (I don't know if that actually prevented speeding tickets or not) and the second reason was the carbs were original and needed over-hauled. So the previous owner put on a standard carb set up. WE HAVE THE ORIGINAL TRI-POWER MANIFOLD!! When dad bought the car he had the mechanic shop check out the carbs with intention of putting the original Tri-Power back on. Sadly. the carbs were not re-buildable. So the car is currently just a standard carb set up. If you purchase the car. we will include the Tri-Power manifold. The car was driven regularly by the previous owner. Since dad bought it. the Pontiac has been in the body shop. interior shop. garage. and driveway. We have not licensed it or driven it. The car is NOT a "Trailer Queen"; it is a "Driver" meant to be enjoyed and "Show 'n' Shined". As I mentioned before. the car is NOT finished. Dad left us before he could finish the Chieftain. So now I'll get down to the nitty-gritty. All body work was done Professionally by a local company. No dents. rust holes. or damage. The paint is ok. A few spots need touched up. Flatbed driver scratched the very bottom of the car with the tow chain when it was transported. May have a nick or tiny scratch on the body just from being in the garage or moved around. We have done our best to protect it with a California car cover. Nothing really to worry about. The best thing the body and paint need now is a professional detail. A good buff and wax will make a big difference. We wash the car in the driveway and do our best to keep it clean. but I'm not experienced with a buffer so it only gets hand washing. All the chrome was Professionally re-done by a local company. WOW! Chrome work is expensive! You probably already knew that so you can imagine what that cost. Next to the headlight a clip fell off and the chrome trim is loose. I don't know how to fasten it. But like I said earlier. the paint is ok. It is a driver. not a trailer queen. The original interior. being from 1957. you guessed it. Yuck! It was ugly looking. old. worn. dirty. and damaged from all the years of use. Mom and dad could not see putting back in something original. You car guys know what I'm talking about. So it was decided. Black and coral. It really is an attention getter. The awesome lines of the '57 body. Earl's waterfall grille. chrome. and the colors. Cool. Since the dome light does not work and needs re-conditioned dad did not have the headliner done. Nor has the cover been done on the rear shelf (by the rear windshield). The lights were working before it went to the body shop. Currently. I don't know which ones work. Or don't work. There may be a wire(s) loose or a wire(s) to fix. ?? As you can see in the pictures. the gauges and dash look good. Again. after the body shop. I don't know what works or is not hooked-up. The '57 will start and run. It doesn't get driven except here in and around the driveway. Battery went dead and needs to charge. Usually. 10 to 15 minutes and she will turn right over. When it runs. it runs ok. but sometimes a little rough. I don't think dad ever got it serviced and tuned-up. I'm not a mechanic; so I do not know much about the plugs. points. this and that's. I do know that dad was looking forward to putting the Tri-Power back on. Did you know that in 1957. NASCAR approved the 347 Tri-Power motor? I've read it was 317 HP! The tranny shifts fine here in the driveway and around. However. keep in mind two things : #1. the car was driven regularly on both town and highway roads by the previous owner. And #2. is we have not driven down the highway or major road. Our driveway is roughly 30 feet wide by 60 feet long. Off the record. yes. I've driven it a couple hundred feet up our hill and back down. Keep things in working order best as I can. Brakes. steering. throttle. etc. seem to be ok. No leaks known. The tires and wheels need to be replaced. They are purely used cheapies meant for storage and transporting. Any extra parts. books. art. etc. we have will come with the car. This is a 1957; there is NO warranty. Vehicle will be sold AS-IS. Mileage is exempt. Glass is good. No visible cracks or damage. Weather stripping and wind lace should probably be replaced. Finally. keep in mind that I am not an expert. If you have any questions. please ask. I will do my best to answer any. I've given the best description I can. And included pictures. WE WELCOME any appraiser. mechanic. or expert you may wish to have look at the Pontiac with you or on your behalf at your cost. I have verified the values via Hemmings. And we had an appraisal done a year or so ago for insurance. The reserve is VERY reasonable. All offers will be considered. Mom is motivated to sell! There have been many offers and this car gets lots of attention. Grab this '57 before it's too late!
