Description

1968 Pontiac Lemans Coupe: The Pontiac Le Mans was first seen in 1962 as the top of the line option on the Pontiac Tempest and offered a sportier and more deluxe trim and interior and included bucket seats. In 1964 the Tempest Le Mans was restyled and upsized to an intermediate-sized car. rather then the previous compact that it had been. Also offered on the '64 Le Mans was the GTO ( Gran Turismo Omologato). and included a larger 389 V8 with 325 or 348 hp. a three-speed floor shift manual transmission with Hurst shifter. heavy-duty suspension. red-line Tiger Paw tires and GTO nameplates. Sales of this popular model soared and in 1966 the GTO became a separate model of it's own. The Le Mans continued as the top of the line. on the Tempest series and in 1970 Pontiac reshuffled its intermediate lineup and the LeMans nameplate was downgraded to the mid-line subseries previously known as the Tempest Custom. Long before the series II 3800 V-6. or the technologically advanced Vortec 4200 inline six offered by GM. Pontiac had its own exclusive ohc6 that was for a time. the most sophisticated engine ever produced by General Motors. The brainchild of John DeLorean. then Pontiac’s Chief Engineer; this SOHC six-cylinder engine was developed to power Pontiac’s increasingly larger Tempest and LeMans intermediates. but DeLorean took a different approach to the design that would include a “first for the U. S. market”. belt-driven overhead camshaft. During its four year run (1966–‘69) the ohc6 continued with minor improvements in horsepower. In 1967 the “sprint” version saw an increase from 207 to 215 bhp. In 1968 the ohc6 was stroked to 250 ci with an increase to 175 bhp for the base ohc6 and no gains for the “sprint” that year. Additional details on the OHC6 engines can be found by searching "overheadcammerschapter 150m history" on Google.
