“You had me at hello.†was the movie line of 1996 in Jerry Maquire and “totally†applies to this time capsule 1996 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 Ram Air Performance Package. With only 23,017 miles and limited production numbers of only 2105 makes this pretty beast of a Pontiac pretty rare. But let’s forget the rarity of the car for a moment and the fact that the manufacturer doesn’t even exist any longer – and let’s talk about what is sitting outside. The curvy and seductive lines are classic Pontiac. Stance is low and daring, European but with American muscle. A view from the nose can only be described as menacing. The Fire Hawk inspired duel snorkel hood is only accented by what clearly looks like airplane landing lights nestled front and center. Closer inspection reveals ‘Ram Air’ inscription placed curiously non intrusive in matching body color lettering. In fact all lettering, Pontiac, Trans Am and Ram Air are all body color matching in Arctic White and blend right in with a 3d effect, until you reach the rear. There is no doubt this sexy beast wants you to know it is WS6 Performance Package, blazingly displayed in a red and gold emblem. Yes, you’re looking at a car that can do 0-60 in 5.8 seconds with a top speed of about 160mph and that’s stock – from 20 years ago! The mighty LT1 5.7 Liter 350 Cubic Inch V8 with new this year less restrictive exhaust system incorporating duel cats instead of the previous single canister. With the Pontiac Only Ram Air option horsepower muscled out another 20 horses to a venomous 305 HP and 335 pounds of torque, proud numbers even in today’s environment. The 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission shifts and handles the performance as it should. The only way to get the Ram Air engine was to order the Ram Air WS6 Performance and Handling Package, a $4,000 increase over the Firebird price. Both of these names were synonyms with Pontiac Performance from years past but not recently used. The WS6 meant stiffer suspension, steering and four wheel disc brakes that made the Trans Ams of the 70’s America’s best handling car of its time. This 1996 Trans Am exceeds all expectations with stiffer tubular front anti-roll bar, higher –rate springs, firmer transmission mount and Panhard-rod bushings with appropriate tuned shocks. The Ram Air Trans Am wasn’t seen since the 60’s. Borrowing right from the SLP Firehawk a set of 17x9 wheels wrapped in 275/40ZR17 Goodyear GS-C rubber added to top flight handling. It’s also the first year an F-body was fitted with 17†rims. The American Muscle car with European handling complete with air bags, anti lock brakes, AM/FM and CD player stereo with equalizer. Lumbar support- power seats, power door locks, power windows, tilt wheel, keyless entry, anti-theft system and T-TOPS! So, we know it’s fast, looks cool, will be a blast to drive and be seen in. With just a hair over 23,000 miles this could be your everyday driver for years at well under the cost of a new Hyundai. Or it’s the weekend cruiser, knowing the value of the no longer produced Trans Am is only increasing. Or do both, just make sure when you see other Trans Am owners you say ‘hello’.
