SOHC gives you two benefits over the 4-valve/double overhead camshaft design (DOHC) in later years: 1) SOHC has double the engine life of DOHC: approximately 200k miles before cam-shaft overhaul; 2) SOHC is much easier to tune up/calibrate; and it gives you better mileage than DOHC.
