Description

The Porsche 912 was built from 1965 – 1969. 1968 was the last year of the Short Wheel Base “SWB” 911 and 912. That was the year Government emission regulations caused Porsche to use a Smog Pump on the 912 engine which heated things up and eventually burnt valves. The early short wheel base 901 and 902 (911 and 912) cars had some of the best build quality of any car ever made. Some say the SWB cars were the 901 in its purest form. These cars are made of real steel and metal chrome plated parts that were meant to last. The short wheel base cars were from a time of artisan car builders who put every bit of skill. craftsmanship and style into their work. I purchased this 912 two years ago from its second owner who had owned it for 35 years. It has never been in an accident and has always been stored in a garage. It will be a great car for someone who wants to have a mechanically well running Porsche that is cosmetically pleasing and clean but isn't perfect. So if you are looking for a pedigreed. numbers matching trailer queen this is not it. I am reluctantly putting it up for sale because we are downsizing and I will no longer have a heated garage for it. I hope that it finds as good a home as I've given it. I will now try to describe the car as accurately as I can. It was built in 1965 (VIN #452477. Serial #6605) in the Karmann factory. originally painted Bahama yellow with a black strip from front to rear. The car was completely restored in 1980 and repainted creamy yellow using DuPont Imron. which is the best performing polyurethane enamel. offering excellent durability. gloss and color retention . (I have a can of that touch up paint. ) At that time it was given black powder coated metal trim and real magnesium rims that are period correct. As the pictures show. the paint job is very presentable. The interior upholstery is in good shape and I recently reupholstered the front Recaro seats. the one item that needed attention. It does not have the original engine. The replacement engine was rebuilt by Reitmeir's Werkstatt in Los Altos CA. The 1. 6 liter engine has been bored out to 1750 cc and produces approximately 110 HP. It pulls well. starts flawlessly. doesn't leak or burn gobs of oil. has 4. 00 miles on the rebuild. and has that wonderful Porsche throaty hum. It cruises nicely at 75 mph at 4. 00 rpm while getting 30 mpg. The (optional) five speed transmission was rebuilt some years ago and shifts flawlessly. The car has many non-stock extras: Magnesium wheels that are period correct. Non-stock pistons. cylinders and cam for more horsepowerPioneer CD player with custom speaker enclosure in the backShoulder harness seat belts for driver and passengerRecaro seats (much more comfortable and supporting than Porsche seats. I drove it 475 miles straight through and wasn't tired. ) In the two years that I have owned it. I have: -replaced the starter -flushed the gas tank -added new Weber carburetors -restored all gauges to operating order. (All gauges work properly. ) -replaced quarter window seals and scrapers on both sides -steering coupler and tie rod assemblies replaced -flushed brake fluid -reupholstered the front seats All repair and service work since I've owned it has been done by German Master Tech. the acknowledged local Porsche specialists. The battery and tires are fairly new. This is a non-smoking car. None of the three owners smoked nor did any of the passengers. After several knowledgeable people have driven this car they have said it handles very well. the steering is responsive (not heavy). it accelerates nicely. it brakes well. the suspension feels solid. All of the people who have driven the car have extensive backgrounds in vintage cars and Porsches. The consensus overall is that this is a very solid driver. My own experience with three Porsches also bears this out. In short. I purchased a well running car and have made it even better. Rust is there but minimal. Two bubble areas on the exterior: one by the right headlight along the edge where the front lid closes and the other along the top of the passenger door by the window trim edge. There is some slight corrosion near the battery box in the trunk. Also some around the left front control arm mounting bolts. (See pictures that depict all rust. ) None of the critical areas in the car are "rusted out". It has been kept in a garage all its life. It has been in California (Orange County or Bay area) except for 2 years in Seattle in the early 80's and the last two years in Bend. OR (high dessert. dry climate). Undercarriage Inspection by Topline Automobile yields the following information ( inspection focused on presence of rust): - some rust bubbling found near right front fender and below right side window - some rust found in left door jamb (minor). - some rust found under vehicle around left front control arm mounting bolts. This is minor and does not affect or encroach upon the mounting assembly. This is easily repaired. - corrosion found near the battery box in trunk. -The rest of the car is clean. I have considered repairing the minor surface rust but didn't want to have to repaint over what is a nice. durable. and attractive paint job. The undercarriage rust is so minor that I haven't gotten around to it. The rust inspection report is available on request. And all receipts for the repair work described above by both owners are likewise available to a serious buyer. If you have questions please post them here. The winning bid must provide $1. 00 through PayPal within 24 hours. I will be glad to assist in shipping or driving it home (I drove it 475 miles. straight through. on the way home when I purchased it and had no problems). If you live in the currently frozen East. I will keep the car for you until you thaw out. I hope that the winning bidder will enjoy this 912 as much as I have!
