That exceptional car, or those not quite in the know, s the Porsche 911 Turbo. Machines that have raised driver’s adrenaline levels, nspired envy among pedestrians, nd terrified minivan drivers for 25 years. And now Stuttgart has delivered what it calls “the ultimate production Porsche,” the 2001 911 Turbo. And as we found out, he legend continues to grow.With good reason, ecause the totally new, th generation, 001 Porsche 911 Turbo is the most sophisticated, ost performance-intensive Porsche yet unleashed on the American market. Loosely based on the 911 Carrera-4, he new Turbo’s all-wheel-drive system is completely changed from the previous Turbo. The viscous clutch has been moved from the rear transaxle and integrated into the front differential. This shifts more weight forward, lus allows Porsche to finally offer the Turbo with the optional Tiptronic S automatic transmission. Though we naturally prefer the sharp, tandard, - speed manual. All-wheel drive power to the front axle varies from 5% to 40% depending on grip. And grip is further enhanced by Porsche’s Stability Management System, hich measures a wide variety of inputs and the yaw rate, nd then momentarily applies the anti-lock brakes to one or more wheels for cornering course correction and balance. Add in traction control, orsche’s E-Gas electronic throttle, nd a set of alloy wheels wearing huge 295/30 tires, nd you have one trick platform.And this is before you lift the lid on the engine bay, hich is packed tight with a 3.6-liter, ual-cam, 4-valve, win-turbo, ater-cooled flat-six that’s derived from the Lemans-winning GT1 race car. Using Porsche’s improved VarioCam-Plus valve timing system, t blurts out 415 horsepower and a bone-crushing 415 pound-feet of torque. All of which is available in a steeper and broader power curve, rom 2,700 to 4,600 rpm! With so much engine and traction-technology, 0-to-60 time of 4.1-seconds comes as no surprise. Nor does the 1/4 mile at 12.6 seconds and 112 miles-per-hour. Top speed is 189 miles per hour. At launch, he smooth bottom end feel from the effective all-wheel drive power distribution is deceptive. But, he engine’s massive midrange punch leaves no doubt that this is a supercar even among 911 Turbos. A supercar, e might add, ith styling that is as functional as it is handsome. But we must also say, ith more complex curves and fewer angles and appendages, t makes a tamer statement than older 911 Turbos. The inside is little changed from other 911s. Which is not a bad thing, ince the 911 cockpit is smart, fficient, nd reasonably roomy. And covered with leather, rom the door panels to the supportive power-operated bucket seats. The combination of folding rear seats, nd up-front trunk well, rovides more than enough luggage space for a weekend getaway. Indeed, or twenty-five years and through five generations, he Porsche 911 Turbo remains one of the most unmatchable of supercars for any price. This is one long running legend fuelled on fact, ot folklore. And it’s more engaging with each rapid generation. This launch year, 001, orsche 911 Turbo began life in New York State. It was ordered from Porsche’s Exclusive-programme and is stuffed with options. See below for full list. A few years later, t left New York and was sold to a gentleman in Texas. He kept the car in Texas for many years before moving (oil industry) to Calgary, lberta, n Canada. The car was then purchased by its most recent owner and moved out to the West Coast. It is a no-stories, o-accidents car with a clean CarFax/CarProof. It now sits on 19” Avantgarde alloy rims with a new set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports that match OEM wheel profile perfectly – maintaining the original geometry of the car. Being very meticulous about condition, he most recent owner removed a 3M wrap and had one of the best paint shops (Coachwerks) remove any signs of road rash from the car. The paint is like new and as you can see in the photographs has a deep brilliant shine. The engine is bone-stock with no modifications. The factory radio has been replaced with a system that also acts as navigation and can be integrated with other accessories (such as cameras and sensors – not on this vehicle).
