Sold new on June 29th 1972 at Wester Porsche/Audi of Monterey California to a Robert S. of Walnut Creek. Robert sold the car to his son in law Steve S. in the late 70s who brought the car down to San Diego. The car went through a couple more owners while my shop Vintage Excellence did the service work here in north county San Diego. In 2009 the owner had us put all the mechanical fuel injection back on the car; it was taken off in the 80s. While in there the rest of the engine was fully converted to 2.4L 911E specs with 165hp. The car has lived back east for the last 6 years and it has now made its way back to California in partial trade for a highly restored car. It truly is one of the best condition early 911 cars that I have ever handled and cars like this rarely come up for sale any longer.
This car has never been modified, ustomized, recked, r taken apart. What does this mean? It is a very solid original car that has a clean and crisp original fit and finish. It has had one repaint, he car was used to in traffic on busy freeways so there are rock chips on the front and a few other chips around the car because it was used but that really does not matter - look at it - it looks great as it is. This is a car you can drive and if it gets another chip or door ding in a parking lot then it won't be like destroying a $25k paint job on a show car. The interior is all original except for the front floor mats. Yes that is right the interior in this condition is all original and it has that fantastic old authentic Porsche smell yet it is not moldy. The trim is original as well and that makes the fit and finish so much better. The wheels have recently been refinished by Weidman the best in the Porsche wheels with a 1 year waiting list, ires are the period correct high end tire that was available in 1972 the XWX and not the discount tire at all. Headlights are real Bosch H1s, riving lights are genuine Hella 118 through the grill mount, ear fog light is an original 1972 version and not one of the modern replacements, ll of the silver trim turn signals lenses are perfect original with Bosch script on each one - for those "in the know" the lights on this car are highly coveted and gives it such an authentic vintage look. The car comes with a Certificate of Authenticity that proves the matching engine transmission and color numbers, lso confirming the engine and where the car was sold is the original maintenance booklet that has the original owner's name, ddress, elling dealer, irst service history. Also included is a tool kit which is worth its weight in gold these days. The car has service history, nd owners manual to go with it.
The original engine in this car had been rebuilt at some point while in San Diego. It had a partial upgrade to E specs - Mahle 2.4E pistons and cylinders, he cylinder heads were ported to 32mm which is E size, he engine had an upgraded 3.0L oil pump installed and the oil bypass upgrade done; oil pressure is excellent. When the engine was rebuilt the injection was taken off to favor new carburetors. Vintage Excellence improved the performance of this car immensely in 2009 when we put all of the MFI back onto the car with an upgrade to full E specs usin, actory E cams, ebuilt the rocker arms, ad the alloy injection pump converted to E specs by Pacific Fuel Injection, nd the throttle bodies were bored to E spec. As of November 2015 a perfectly restored set of 2.4E throttle bodies were installed. The cooling fan was also refinished at the same time to give the engine that amazing look. A leak down engine condition test was also performed and showed less than 3% leakage on all cylinders which is a perfect reading. At this time the car needs nothing but a new owner.
The 1972 Porsche 911 could easily be called the best of all the early 911 models. The engineers car. The key feature that makes the 1972 year special is the forward mounted oil tank with external fill or also called Oil Clapper in Europe. Placing the large oil tank forward of the rear wheels made the car better balanced but this wonderful bit of engineering was also the cause of gas station confusion where fuel was accidentally put into the engine. This was such an issue back when we had gas station attendants that the 1973 model was reverted back to the original rearward tank design. Of course these accidents would never happen today but this 1972 novelty reminds us that not all great ideas are understood. Suspension refinements made the 2.4 cars much less twitchy and the 915 transmission solves all the quirks of the earlier 901 version. This car can be described as a 911T/E, eaning it is a fuel injected 2.4L T and the E is for Einspritzer or Fuel Injection. In the USA the 2.4L cars were required to have injection to meet strict emissions standards while the European 2.4Ts still had Zenith carburetors. Everything you could want all in one car but without the 911S price tag.
*If this car would be much better suited for you with Sports Seats then I can offer at an additional cost a pair of authentic Recaro Sports Seats in black leather freshly restored by Autos International.
