Description

Up for sale is my very nice 1998 993 C4S in artic silver metallic with a black interior. If you are looking for a low mileage, pampered, flawless garage queen, this is not the car for you. If you are looking for a well driven, great looking car that you can drive and enjoy without fretting over every mile clicking away on the odometer, than this one is definitely worth your consideration.

The original owner went through Ray Catena Porsche in Edison, NJ to order this car through the Porsche Exclusive Program. Every option was hand-picked and the original owner chose to take delivery of the car as it rolled off the assembly line in Stuttgart, Germany. Some of the factory options include motor sound, carbon/aluminum, aluminum color dials, aluminum door sills, 18" Sport Classic wheels, Porsche insignia embossed in the headrests, and aerokit II. The original sale price after all of the exclusive options and tourist delivery was a staggering $106,366. Eventually the owner decided to trade this exclusive car in on a new Lamborghini.

After an extensive nationwide search I found and purchased this car from the 2nd owner in Delaware (Note: first 2 owners listed on CARFAX are the same person as there was a title update when a lease or loan was paid off). I was drawn to this particular car for several reasons. Most importantly because it was rust free and mechanically sound. Additionally I wanted a 1998 wide body 993 with the Turbo S aerokit because I am smitten with the lines of the car and I wanted one of the very last air-cooled 993s produced. The C4S shares the same bodywork and big red brakes as the 993 Turbo/Turbo S. This particular C4S is 1 of 299 that came to the US in the final production year of the 993. It is a superb example from the end of the air-cooled era.

Since I purchased the car 2 years ago I have thoroughly enjoying driving it as I continually worked on improvements. The car came to me with some imperfections that I have addressed. Prior to my ownership the driver side door stop was liberated from the weld internal to the door pillar and an unsightly repair job was done. Also, there was some staining under the battery which bothered me because it was not uniform with the rest of the color on the front trunk pan. I commissioned the local expert known for award winning restorations of vintage Porsches. He surgically removed the old door stop and grafted a new one in place while reinforcing the new door stop with a block of metal. The result is better than factory and was done without cutting corners to ensure it will never need to be addressed again. The surface of the front pan below the battery was ground down and then the entire pan was primed and repainted. The workmanship is amazing and even the most discerning eyes have difficulty detecting the repairs (I have before, during and after pictures). While the body shop had paint mixed up I also asked to have the front and rear bumpers skins repainted because of some scratches and rock chips. Also, the Turbo S from chin spoiler was scraped on the underside and I wanted it to look new again (have pictures). The cost of the body/paint work was around $5,500, which admittedly is high, but I am always willing to pay for quality and that is what was delivered. While the bumpers were off it was noted the frame and front/rear bumper structures were original and unblemished.

The engine is healthy and pulls strong. It is not showing any signs of fatigue. There is some oil weeping from the timing chain covers and valve covers which is very typical for these cars. I considered replacing the timing chain cover seals but was essentially persuaded to leave them as-is. I was told even new gaskets/seals are known to weep so drive the car as-is.

I have addressed several big maintenance items in the last 300 miles. I put new Bridgestone S0-2 tires on the rear. The fronts are matching tires and have plenty of meat left. New brake pads and sensors were installed on all 4 corners. The brake rotors are fairly new too and have lots of life left in them. I had a leak, which was traced to a compromised fuel filter seal, so the fuel tank was drained and a new fuel filter, assembly and seal were installed. I replaced the battery with an Optima red top gel battery. I’m probably missing a few other maintenance items here and there. Note, I only have maintenance records covering my ownership, but I have some pictures and notes from the previous owner covering some prior maintenance history. For example, I was told the clutch was done around 85K miles. I will share as much of the maintenance history as I was able to cobble together. I performed a thorough mechanical inspection of the car and I encourage prospective buyers to do the same.

Prior to my ownership the car was fitted with a RUF front strut brace and Koni shocks and struts. During my ownership I added a few personal touches to the cars which are easily reversed. I removed the carbon fiber 4 spoke steering wheel and replaced it with a 3 spoke wheel with silver crest embedded in the airbag. After reading many rave reviews I purchased a set of FD Motorsport Stage III mufflers and installed them. With these mufflers the car has an air-cooled flat six growl that sounds amazing. I still have the original steering wheel and mufflers. Also, I have the owner's manual, maintenance book, 2 keys/remotes, spare tire, air compressor, tool kit, and jack.

In summary, I would describe this C4S as solid driver. There are still some imperfections here and there, such as some rock chips. All mechanicals work and I am not aware of anything needing attention. I just had the interior and exterior professionally detailed, including clay bar and wax treatment. I have described the car as best as I can and would rather exceed expectations than disappoint.

The car resides with me in Merritt Island, FL, about 45 minutes due East of Orlando and 5 minutes South of the Kennedy Space Center. I will gladly facilitate inspections of the car. I would encourage anyone seriously interested in the car come see it in person.
