I am helping a friend sell this car. Just as a matter of reference, I have been judging cars at all types of show levels for over 25 years and have extensive experience in restoration of many marques. I personally own a Porsche 356C and a ’96 993. I am extremely picky and probably grade more on the lower side when evaluating vehicles. I would consider a 10 on my scale to be a Concour Quality vehicle, just so you have a reference. This example is collector quality and is in Concour condition from my perspective.

In the grand scheme of sports car history written fifty years from now, the 80’s and up to late 90’s will surely be considered one of the greatest era in Porsche automotive legend. This will be known as the era when sports cars were real sports cars, seat of the pants, relatively simple and more than fun to drive. In this era when it came to sticking the rubber to the planet Earth nobody delivered it better than Porsche and their team of engineers. To put it simply, air cooled boxer engines ruled the day. Those days are forever gone and while Porsche still pushes the envelope in every manner possible there is just something magical about the Porsche from this era that truly epitomizes the real spirit of sporting cars. These cars, especially the Turbo versions pushed the envelope in boxer style engine design. Who knew a boxer engine could produce 408 horsepower… are you kidding me.

This is an extraordinary example of what might be considered the last and best of the air cooled Porsches. It came equipped with the Sunroof, AC, Pleated Leather Seats, a stereo CD Player and all the goodies that came with the Turbo Package.

Finished in Arena Red Metallic with black leather interior, this exciting 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo (Type 993) was originally delivered through Porsche of Tampa and stayed in that area until June of 2009 when it went to Arizona to the second owner. The current owner bought the car and took it to Texas in November of 2014. In May of 2015 the third owner moved to CA where it has been to date. All three owners looked at this vehicle as a collector vehicle from day one. It has been lovingly cared for by those owners and driven less than 700 miles per year.

All service records are listed below and are documented with the original Service Maintenance Manual and receipts for other work performed. There is also in the photo section below this write-up a full CarFax ownership history from new to present.

BODY & PAINT

The body and paint on this vehicle is simply the finest you will find on a 20 year old car, unless it had zero miles on it. The body is perfectly straight and appears to have never been damaged in its history. Take a look at the shut lines and you will see just what I am referring to. The original factory orange peel matches from panel to panel and there are zero scratches, abrasions or dings. I would have to rate the paint and body at a 9.9 out of 10.

Glass is all factory original and free of cracks or pits.

INTERIOR

The Interior is completely stock, original and near flawless. The dash is crack free and indicative of a car that has literally spent it’s entire life covered in a garage. I would rate the interior at a 9.8. On the Survivor Scale it is an easy 10. Note: The day I took the interior pictures I was in extreme sunlight and my settings were off on my camera. The pictures look a little washed out in comparison to what it looks like in person. The interior literally looks and “smells” BRAND NEW.
The Undercarriage is in fabulous untouched condition and showcases its easy rust-free life.

MECHANICAL

This Arena Red Rocket rolls with authority, if you are looking at this vehicle you already know what they are all about, so I will skip my description. This example runs, handles and brakes flawlessly in every category. The car has always been serviced by Porsche Dealers except for some recent work that was done to it in 2009 (see notes below and pictures of receipts). There was a PPI done on the car in 2009 by the 2nd owner, the paperwork is attached (see pictures).

Today, this 993 Turbo is presented in true #1 condition, probably one of the nicest in the country. The original factory color, Arena Red was chosen by the factory to represent the car in their dealer poster and other marketing materials for 1996. A picture of the dealer poster is attached near the end of the picture section.

The car comes with the original books, tools and compressor. Less than 2000 miles have been covered since the Michelin Pilot Sport tires were mounted. The car is exceptionally well-sorted mechanically. It starts up immediately, idles wonderfully; drives straight down the road and brakes with authority. It has been recently serviced and needs nothing for its new owner to do.

The looks, power and drivetrain combined to ensure that this 911 Turbo was a great success. For many enthusiasts, the Type 993 Turbo was the best Porsche ever along with representing the last air-cooled incarnation. No wonder it's such a desirable, sought-after machine.

If you are looking for a concour example of the 993 Turbo to add to your collection, sorted mechanically and show worthy inside and out, then this may just be the car for you. I would not hesitate to jump in this Turbo and take a cross-country trip tomorrow. On the other hand, I would probably do like my friend when he moved it from Texas and ship it. No wait, maybe I would drive it.

911. For millions of people in the world, just a number. For some, however, it is the numerical code for a phenomenon that defies technical description. To put it another way: for them, it is the legend of the Porsche 911.

Please call if you are local and want to see and experience this fine specimen. We welcome inspection from reputable and knowledgeable inspectors or experts.

I am selling this car for the current owner who is a friend and collector; his number is available as well. Should you have further questions please feel free to call Frank at 949-310-6262, between the hours of 8AM and 11PM Pacific Standard Time seven days a week.

About the 993 Turbo

As soon as the Type 993 Carrera was introduced with its voluptuous lines, people were anxious to see what a Turbo version would look like. This anticipation was revealed in 1995, when the new 911 Turbo was unveiled for the 1996 model year. Providing the already handsome 993 the wide-body Turbo effect was a natural formula for success. One of the first impressive visual cues is the cars massive presence from the rear; the rear arches were extended by approximately 1.25-inches, the front and rear bumpers were extended downwards and allowed space for three large air intakes in the nose and improvement of the aerodynamic balance at the rear of the car. The new “teatray” type spoiler over the rear deck has an almost integral, wrap-around look that many commented appears to be “melted over the car.” This aero device was now finished in body color and it had been reduced in weight.

Wheels can have such a positive influence on a car’s design and these new-for-1996 alloys perfectly accent the stunning bodywork. In a measure of weight-savings, the spokes are hollow construction and fashioned in a manner that induces cool air to flow through to the brakes and helps keep them efficient when exploring the cars impressive limits. The four-wheel disc brake system was suitably uprated and featured red calipers with four piston activation on large drilled and ventilated rotors. The substantial 18-inch wheels were as large as conceivably possible with eight-inches of width in front and ten-inches in the rear.

The engine was in many ways similar to the normally aspirated 3.6-liter unit in the regular 911 but with lower-crowned pistons to reduce the compression ratio to 8.0:1, and single spark plugs per cylinder instead of two. Vital workings were strengthened to manage the increased power. The revolutionary thing about the engine was being fitted with two KKK K16 turbochargers rather than one. Unlike the sequential arrangement seen on the 959 (where one turbo kicked in after the other), these were arranged so that one worked on each cylinder bank, meaning each turbocharger could be smaller and so would “spool up” quicker, drastically reducing turbo-lag.

A new Bosch Motronic engine management system controlled all this, and maximum power was a heady 408-hp, with sufficient torque available from low revs to make the 993 Turbo much easier to drive compared to its predecessors. The drivability was further heightened by the fact the power was directed to all four wheels for the first time, this 911 Turbo is full-time four-wheel drive. The system was based on that of the Carrera 4, but with different gear ratios and stronger internals. Like the Carrera 4, the Turbo features Automatic Brake Differential (ABD) to reduce possible rear-wheel spin.
