Description

Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III "Chinese Eye" Fixed head Coupe 1964 1 of 64 made. Words cannot describe this stunning 1964 Silver Cloud III "Chinese Eye" Fixed Head Coupe. Finished in Regent Red with Biscuit tan interior. A special order of only 2 with "pig skin" Connolly hide interior leather. The car sports an amazing 55. 00 accountable miles. This Chinese Eye is a multiple award winning car that is the result of an epic 10 year restoration exercise that matches the commitment and tenacity of the film making of Ben Hur!|The car was delivered new in California in 1965 to the Reese Taylor family oil Tycoons who owned the "76" gas stations (with the car comes an original picnic blanket with the Reese Taylor family emblem). It was owned for some 30 years and subsequently purchased by an enthusiastic Rolls-Royce owner club member who has care-taken it from 1998 until now. Thru this most recent owner. the car has won so many show and concours awards we have lost count but its most recent accolade being "1st Place Best in Class" at last years RROC National in Pennsylvannia. The car was featured on the front cover of "the Flying Lady" which is quite the compliment. Also with the car is its original black Californian number plate. Reese Taylor family; "76" gas station tycoons - 1st ownersThis "Chinese Eye" is simply stunning in all aspects and would represent one of the finest examples you would hope to find. Body and paint is virtually perfect. She was repainted some 10 years ago in the same original colour and at cost of over $25. 00. It is painted in 2 stage clear over base and looks stunning. She is finished off with a single light gold fine-line in the hand painted tradition to the lower window rail and hubcap beauty rings. All bright work is in excellent condition without any pitting. dents or marks whatsoever. The interior is simply stunning with all its fitments done to original. The Connolly leather was specially ordered for the restoration to ensure it was the exact match of original. A unique and very special order of "imitation pig-skin"; a process where the Connolly hide is subtly perforated like the gentle pores you see in pig-skin. A very unique touch. This is what was fitted to this car at the factory. Only 2 cars were ever ordered this way. The leather is simply stunning. She does show all the lovely but very minimal signs of gentle use and the warm "patina" that makes these Rolls-Royce interiors what they are (The word "patina" is used literally here; "gorgeous leather with the soft fold lines that only the best quality leather delivers"). The African burl walnut wood throughout is to die for and has been done to perfection. I highly recommend viewing of all the close up photos in the link provided. The Wilton wool carpets and factory correct broadcloth wool headliner are nothing less than perfect. Mechanically. the car is simply superb. In fact. perfect! She has been meticulously maintained by its engineer background and Rolls-Royce enthusiast owner in concert with one of America's leading Silver Cloud experts and restorers. No expense nor time was spared in its maintenance. She performs perfectly and presents absolutely stunning. Under the bonnet and the underside of the car was meticulously restored to "show-queen" quality. Countless hundred's of hours refinishing every single nut and bolt! Done to absolute perfection and looks like a "brand new" Cloud III. You must take the time to look at all the under-hood and underside pictures closely. As impressive this car is. the recent owner was a believer in driving the car and she has been driven on various Rolls-Royce events and tours. The most recent "long tour" was an impressive and effortless 2. 00 mile round drive (without incident!) in attendance of the Louisville Kentucky RROC National meet in 2012. Upon its return the car was fully detailed back to its as new presentation. She is certainly very sound and the low mileage can be of no question. She idles very smooth. powers well and handles the road comfortably and straight. She comes to a stand still true and strong. She literally behaves like a brand new Cloud III coupe when new. As you would expect. this Silver Cloud III Chinese Eye Fixed head coupe comes with its original accoutrements and operating manual and considerable documentation to include history. maintenance. provenance and awards. If you were to account for the time and effort spent in restoring this fine example. the cost would be in excess of $250. 00. The car is of the very highest standard and is an undisputable true concours. show winning car. ~~ This stately Silver Cloud III "Chinese Eye" Fixed Head Coupe is an outstanding example of the marque that is ready to be driven and enjoyed. She is of RROC show standard and is an undisputable winner in her category and a real "must" for any serious Rolls-Royce collection. ~~ Important information on the Silver Cloud III Chinese Eye series. Few do not realise that of only some 2. 00 of the Silver Cloud IIIs ever made. less than 100 were ever coachbuilt in the 2 door "Chinese Eye" configuration. About half in Fixed Head Coupe form and only 2 were ever made in the same combinations of this one being offered. General information on the Silver Cloud III series. Only 2. 00 of these cars were ever made. The Silver Cloud III arrived in 1963. External dimensions were slightly tweaked over the previous model. the interior remodelled. the weight reduced by a little over 100 kg (220 lb) and improvements made to the engine which included fitting 2-inch (51 mm) SU carburettors in place of the 1¾ inch units used on the Series II Silver Cloud. The compression ratio was increased to 9:1. reflecting the higher octane levels of premium fuel in major markets. Rolls-Royce. as before. refused to disclose overall engine power output. but indicated that there had been an improvement of "perhaps 7%". Increased power and weight reduction boosted speed and performance slightly. The engine now included a nitride hardened crankshaft to reflect the extra power being generated and in response to reports of broken crankshafts in the earlier V8 Silver Clouds. The transmission was a GM Hydramatic which Rolls-Royce used under licence. Between 1963 and 1966 there were no major changes. Stainless steel wheel trims replaced chrome-plated ones in April 1963. and an improved rear window demister was introduced in November of the same year. Wider front seats were fitted in January 1964. and five months later a revised headlamp surround now incorporated a very small RR monogram. A chrome badge reading "Silver Cloud III" in an italic font can be seen on the right bottom side of the boot of most UK and European delivered examples.
