This Gold SE Trans Am comes with PHS documentation to validate its authenticity. This is a very nice driver quality SE Trans Am that looks great the way it is or it would take very little to bring back to stock configuration. The paint looks fantastic. the interior is in mostly original condition. and car is a very nice driver. We actually drove this car back to our shop. which was about an hour drive. and the car felt nice on the road and highway. This Trans Am is loaded with sought after options such as: removable T-tops. factory air conditioning. power windows. power locks. and tilt wheel. The beautiful and desirable color combinations of Solar Gold over Camel Lombardy cloth deluxe interior is the correct factory color scheme as verified on the trim tag and PHS documents. which are both pictured below. This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic TA that is ready to be used and enjoyed at an unbeatable value. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come. Please peruse all of the photos. video. and information below to get a true sense of how nice this Trans Am really is. As a side note. this Trans Am is not a dealer auction vehicle. We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our classics come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did. If you have a question about the Pontiac. just give us a call. model description The Gold Special Edition car was a reversal of the Black Special Edition cars. Instead of black paint with gold striping. the Gold Edition had gold paint with black striping. Well. it was actually dark gold/brown striping. Basically. the package consisted of:-- Solar Gold exterior with dark gold pin striping-- Gold grille liners. I. P. engine turn. and misc. interior and exterior gold emblems-- Black tail lamp housing. and black windshield and backlite moldings-- Gold glass in Fisher hatches (CC1) with black molding-- Interior trim restricted to base or custom camel tan vinyl or cloth-- Formula steering wheel in camel tan with gold spokes-- Gold 15x7 cast aluminum wheels (15x8 if the WS6 was ordered with it)Just like the Black Special Edition cars that preceded them. the Gold Edition Trans Am also had all of the gold appointments on the car. They had the gold bird emblem and gold spokes on the steering wheel. Gold Dash Bezel and gold shifter button emblem. Also. another thing that stands out on the interior is the steering column. On regular gold 1978 Trans Ams. the steering column was black. but in the Y88 Gold Special Edition. the steering column was camel tan. condition Exterior The gold exterior is in terrific driver condition. This car was treated to a recent repaint and as one can see in the photos. the paint has a bright gloss. deep shine. and smooth finish. No decals were applied to the car after it was painted and the look is very clean and quite classy. New correct SE decals can easily be purchased and applied to a correct Y88 appearance. Often times Trans Am's will have particularly chipped up front ends. this car does not. both bumpers are look great with no flaking or faded paint. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There may be some small blemishes that were too faint to show up in photos. but nothing that is really noticeable from about five feet away. As one can see in the many photos of the underside this car is solid overall. We have taken specific photos of the quarters. rockers. underside. inside the trunk. and other areas most prone to rust to show how clean this car is. The rear tail panel area is the worst spot on the car. The American Racing Torque Thrust 17" wheels look terrific on this TA and have no curb rash and shine beautifully. The tires are sized 245/45/R17 on all corners; they have decent tread. but do have some cracking. As with many of these early f-bodies with T-tops the fit of the windows to the tops is not perfect and would greatly benefit from some adjustments to the window stops. All of the weather stripping. window sweeps. door seals and trunk seal are in good condition. The trunk is clean and solid and has no visible rust as one can see in the photos. We know that there is some variation in the photos below as to the shade of gold. This seems to be a common occurrence on all of our gold or tan colored cars. It is due to the white balance settings on the digital camera and the trouble it has under the fluorescent lights in our showroom. For some reason this is the worst on gold and tan cars. We would say that the overall photos. and the first photo. show the color pretty accurately. Also. in our opinion the color on this car is slightly darker then the Solar Gold we have had on other Trans Am's. This Trans Am has a stamping on the radiator core support. which is pictured below. The core support appears to show a "01 05 78" stamp. or January 5. 1978. This stamping would be correct and original as it precedes the car's build date of the first week of March. 1978 (03A). As one can imagine. if this Trans Am had ever sustained even a minor front end collision this part would have been repaired or replaced. The original stamping is great to see in tact. The Trans Am looks in person as it does in the photos. Interior The Camel Lombardy deluxe cloth interior of this Trans Am looks nice. The seat covers are Lombardy Cloth originals and are in decent condition. The seat covers are 37 year old factory originals not some cheap aftermarket replacements. The carpet is in good condition with no major stains. rips. or holes. The original dash is in great condition with no cracks. no fading. no warping. or sun damage. The stereo has been upgraded to a modern JVC cd player with newer 6x9 speakers mounted in the rear deck wired to a hidden power amp in the trunk. the system sounds amazing. A previous owner added a gauge pod located in the map pocket to accurately monitor the cars oil pressure and operating temperature. The factory tachometer. oil pressure gauge. and temp gauge are not functional. The door panels are factory originals and are in decent condition with no cracks or splits. and both door pulls are solid and in tact. The headliner is in great condition with no sagging or stains and was just installed. The rear package tray is in new condition as well and was also just installed. These 1970's GM interiors are not know to wear well and the good condition of this mostly original interior is a true testament to the love and care this car has received over the years. This car has not been smoked in; there are no burn marks and no smoke aroma what so ever. The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos. Mechanical This Trans Am appears to be in good mechanical condition. The car drives great; it feels good the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph. braking to stoplight. and going through some curves. Please note that it shifts well. there are no strange vibrations. and the car performs quite nice overall. The transmission shifts smoothly. An Edelbrock aluminum intake was added to this Pontiac NOM and adds performance and tidiness to the engine bay. This TA is a great driver that feels awesome on the road and at highway speeds. There is no smoke when starting or driving the car. It starts right away every time. idles nice. and runs well. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. This TA has a new true dual exhaust system with no catalytic converter. upgraded Flowmaster mufflers. and 2. 5" pipes. It sounds healthy at idle and cruising speeds. As with many older carbureted cars. this one is a bit cold blooded. Also. the engine is clean and nicely detailed as one can see from the photos. The horn works as do all the interior and exterior lights. wipers. fan for the blower motor (except on high). and power windows. though they are a bit slow. The incomplete AC system. the power door locks. and cruise control are not working. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car. especially on a beautiful sunny day with the T-Tops removed. Overall Condition Overall. this PHS Documented 1978 Trans Am is in very nice driver condition. This Y88 SE is a great value and we have it priced to sell. It's difficult to find a nice driver condition SE these days as most are over restored and out of most buyers price range. Verifiable originality is also extremely important in pricing on these cars and as one can see this Pontiac is documented and undoubtedly a correct Special Edition. This car turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector or the average enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson and Mecum stars of the future. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
