1967 MG Midget 1098cc
MG introduced their new Midget in 1961, o be sold alongside the Austin Healey Sprite and initially powered by the well-proven 948cc ‘A’ series engine. An uprate in the power unit to 1,098cc came with the Mark II Midget of 1964, iving it a top speed of over 90mph. At the same time suspension was improved with semi-elliptic rear springs and added luxury came with wind-up windows while safety was catered for by front disc brakes. The Midget carried on the Abingdon tradition first set by the M-type in 1929, atering for the younger enthusiast who wanted the thrill of sports car motoring at a budget price.
The fine example offered here, f 1967 vintage, tarted off as a rust-free car in need of a little freshening. So a complete restoration was the result! In the ever-stylish British Racing Green, he car presents beautifully having “settled” in the 2 years since the work was completed. It sits well on the painted wire wheels, hod with excellent tires with plenty of tread remaining. Brightwork is excellent as is the new top.
The black interior was redone, sing leather for the seats and a new wood-rimmed Moto Lita steering wheel was added to make the cockpit a very nice place to be.
Mechanically, he car is in excellent condition. Since a complete rebuild of the engine, he car has covered only 300 or so shakedown miles. It shifts perfectly through a good clutch and brakes, uspension and steering all feel extremely taut. The car feels bright and anxious to go. All electrical systems work perfectly.
This is a truly fantastic example of an easy-to-own piece of British sportscar history from about the most favourable year in the most desirable color combination with all the “right bits”. It needs nothing and is ready to be enjoyed at shows or country lanes.
