This auction is for a 2009 Smart Fortwo. It is finished in Rally Red with a black Tridion® and has the gray interior. Smarts were first sold in the USA in 2008, ut they have been sold in Europe and the rest of the world for ten years prior to that, arning a reputation for quality and reliability after countless billions of miles on the road. 1.5 million Smart Fortwo cars were built as of 2013 and annual sales figures are strong. The design of the Smart was influenced by the Swiss watch maker Swatch®, hose CEO began developing an idea for a new small and stylish city car using the same type of manufacturing strategies and personalization features used to popularize Swatch watches. Initially, he car was known as the Swatchmobile. To share costs and manufacturing technology, watch partnered with Mercedes-Benz to implement production. The name Smart derives from Smart Mercedes ART. A factory was built in Hambach, rance, ust a few miles from the German border, nd this is where Smarts are built to this day. A combination of chic French and Swiss style with renowned German engineering.

The Smart Fortwo is powered by a rear mounted 1.0 liter 70 H.P. DOHC 12-valve 3 cylinder all aluminum engine made by Mitsubishi. Known as the 3B21, he engine is set at an angle to fit below the back cargo floor and features an aluminum engine block and head for light weight and maximum heat dissipation, ast iron cylinder liners for exceptional durability, ual overhead cams with MIVEC® (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system) variable valve timing for maximum power output at all engine speeds, steel timing chain for reduced maintenance instead of a rubber timing belt found in many other cars that need periodic replacement, ultiport fuel injection for excellent gas mileage, rive by wire throttle for precise engine control and coil on plug (COP) ignition for reliability in all environmental conditions. This engine adds Japanese quality to the mix along with affordable parts and service goals that couldn’t have been met if a Mercedes manufactured engine was used.

The engine is mated to a 5-speed automated manual transmission with manual mode along with Electronic Traction Control (ETC). It combines the ease and comfort of driving an automatic transmission with the economy, portiness and easier reparability of a manual transmission. In other words, t’s a lot easier and cheaper to replace a clutch on a manual transmission than it is to rebuild or replace an automatic transmission. The transmission is basically a regular manual gearbox, ut there is no clutch pedal. In automatic mode, ll shifting and clutch actuation is performed by a module controlling the shift motor and a clutch actuator. The feel is identical to that of a full manual transmission with the slight pause between gear shifts and slight engine revving during take off from a stop. It even has rollback protection with Hill-Assist Control (HAC) that keeps the brakes engaged for a second while you move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Besides automatic mode, ou can move the shifter to the left from the “D” position into manual mode and then tap forward to upshift or rearward to downshift. Regardless, he transmission will always downshift to a lower gear if you slowdown and forget to do it yourself. And whenever manual mode is selected, he gear position, thru 5, s shown in the multifunction display. It has a low first gear that provides brisk acceleration from a stop, hile the high overdrive top gear allows for effortless highway cruising and great fuel economy. Rounding out the Smart is a body built to last and a rigid chassis with steering, uspension and brake systems made for comfort as well as providing excellent handling, oad feel and positive feedback. Smart body panels are made of a plastic composite that will never rust and that absorb minor impacts without getting dents like a metal car body would. The main structure of the car is composed of the Tridion Safety Cell, hich in addition to excellent safety characteristics, akes for an exceptionally stiff chassis for reduced body flex allowing excellent handling. Start with a manual rack and pinion steering for quick maneuvering and easy parking on congested city streets while still providing precise feedback at higher speeds that most power steering systems isolate out. The car is in great condition inside and out. It has an excellent body with none of the scratches or blemishes you would normally expect on a car of this age and mileage. I checked the car over top to bottom and found no evidence of any accidents or even any previous paintwork. Remember, t’s hard enough to find a two or three year old low mileage car which hasn’t had a hood or fender repaired or replaced, et alone a 7 year old one. The paint itself is beautiful and shiny and this bright red color just about glows in the sunlight. It has been cleaned with Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay System, olished with Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze cleaner polish and topped off with Meguiar’s Ultimate Synthetic Wax for a high gloss shine. The headlights were detailed with the 3M headlight polishing system for a crystal clear look. The wheels were removed and detailed on the inside as well as the outside and look great. All the glass, oldings, rim and emblems are excellent except for the cosmetic plastic outer coating on the roof has deteriorated in spots which is quite common on these models. It’s not anything that stands out, nd an inexpensive solution some have done is a wrap, articularly a carbon fiber design would look great.

The interior is in great condition as well. It has nice upholstery, ashboard, oor panels, arpet and headliner with no cracks, ips or tears, r any major signs of wear. The car doesn‘t appear to have been smoked in. In fact, t’s not even equipped with a lighter. The engine compartment is clean and the cargo area looks like its hardly ever been used.

Mechanically it runs and drives excellent. The engine runs strong and feels smooth while accelerating and throughout the cruising range and it starts instantly whether hot or cold. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, he brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping and the suspension is tight. The A/C blows ice cold. It has a matching set of four Kumho Solus tires with excellent tread all around. They have been balanced with coated weights mounted on the inside of the wheel for a super clean look and which wont corrode and look ugly like uncoated weights do.

The car has been fully checked out and serviced with over $2,500 worth of new or recent parts, aintenance and repairs with original Smart, ercedes or other name brand parts so that only your enjoyment rather than your immediate attention will be required on delivery. Smart has sold a majority of their cars in Europe because of the narrow roads, ight parking spaces and high gas prices. While not as common in the U.S., hat can be a good thing if you don’t want a cookie cutter car that you see by the dozen at every mall or supermarket parking lot. If you like individuality, he Smart Fortwo is a good car to express that in. It’s styling is unique, with Euro-chic design combined with Teutonic flair combining to form an attractive and functional vehicle that looks stylish from any angle without being flashy. The first thing you notice is the overall size, r lack thereof, s the doors seem to span nearly the entire length of the car. The next thing you notice is the beautiful shade of red that a Ferrari owner would be most familiar with. Then you admire the euro-style touches that add a rich appearance such as the black honeycomb upper and lower grilles, ender mounted turn signal repeaters and shorty antenna. Now open the door and step inside. Notice the light and airy feeling you get, otally opposite of what you would expect in such a small car. Even 6 foot 5” drivers have enough head and legroom in the Fortwo. In fact, t has about the same legroom, nd close to the headroom, f a Cadillac Escalade. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, he materials inside are first-rate, nd the view out the windshield is panoramic. An abundance of light fills the cabin. Grab the steering wheel or shifter and notice how the dash switches and navigation screen are just a fingertip away. Next, ook ahead at the dashboard and instrument cluster with the large easy to read speedometer with just MPH markings and the multifunction display below it. Notice high quality pinpoint design gray fabric covering the dash and the brushed aluminum accents throughout. Not only is the styling attractive, ut all the textures have a rich feel and look and all the switchgear have a precise soft touch action. From the thickness of the steering wheel, he leather on the shift knob, he graining pattern on the dash and door panels, r the layout of the knobs and switches on the dash, verything looks and feels like it came from a more expensive car. It’s no wonder that in 2002, he New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) introduced a first generation Fortwo into its permanent collection (the only vehicle to be included into the collection while still in production).

Overall this is a super sharp car that looks absolutely fantastic in this Rally Red color. You’re sure to get many questions and complements about it at the mall or supermarket parking lot from total strangers. If you don’t want attention, r if you are the least bit shy, on’t buy this car, warn you. If you are looking for a very nice Smart Fortwo in the most desirable color, n excellent condition, nd at a good price, hen this car is hard to beat. 2008 was the first year for the Smart Fortwo in the USA, nd this 2009 looks virtually identical to late model Fortwo’s up to 2015. What that means is you can own a car with the looks and style of a late model Fortwo for a fraction of the cost. Also remember that we don’t charge dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. Also when comparing prices to the other Fortwo’s listed for sale, emember the things that you won’t have to spend money on, oon after getting it home. With this car you wont have to spend $1,000 or more on paint or bodywork, ou won’t have to spend $700 on a valve adjustment, ou won’t have to spend $300 for a new set of tires, ou won’t have to spend $300 on a complete front brake service, ou won’t have to spend $300 on a complete rear brake service, ou won’t have to spend $300 on a coolant and brake flush, ou won’t have to spend $300 on a tune-up and filters service and you won’t have to spend $300 on any upcoming scheduled maintenance. With many of the other listings on Ebay, raigslist or on dealers lots, ou’re lucky if they even check the oil before delivery. When comparing this car to the others, lso keep in mind that this car looks and runs excellent, s fully serviced, asn’t been smoked in and is super clean inside and out.
