For those not familiar with this family of vehicles, starting in 1970 Suzuki introduced the L J10 (Light Jeep). With the addition of water cooling and other minor changes, it became the L J20 in 1972. This was the last model imported through 1974 due to federal emissions and safety regulations. Later models were the L J50 and L J80. If the body style seems somewhat familiar, they were the predecessor to the now famous Suzuki Samurai introduced in 1986. These vehicles are extremely popular with off road aficionados. Check out the www.L J10 web site. They have a lot of info including history, complete parts, service manuals, user forum and owner vehicle pictures on line. The 1972 brochure states the Suzuki LJ20 Is A Lightweight Compact Four-Wheel Drive Vehicle Capable Of Running On Any Bad Road. It has a 4-speed synchronized transmission matched with a High-Low transfer case to shift from two to four wheel drive. The brochure advertises ability to climb a 35 degree grade and 50mph top speed. The LJ20 was only 10.5’ long and 4.25’ wide. Unique for this period was the high performance water-cooled 359cc/21.9cu.in./28hp 2- stroke 2 cylinder in line gasoline engine. Suzuki’s CCI Direct Lubrication System eliminated having to mix the gas and oil. This system provided pure lubricating oil directly to the crankshaft, connecting rods and cylinders at rates matching the power output of the engine. The LJ20 has 16” wheels with box frame chassis for rigidity and has a fold down windshield. It features a locking center parking brake system that secured the drive shaft independent of the wheel brakes and prevented theft. Maximum capacity is 550 lbs. and curb weight is only 1378 lbs.
This first vehicle is a used 1972 LJ20 (open soft top model) in Sirius Green color. It is ID Number 105489 with the ID tag on the left front fender. The vehicle is in good condition as pictured. It has had only one owner, my father, since 1979. It was driven occasionally until the mid 1980’s when it was put into covered storage. It remained there until 2015 when it was put on a trailer and moved to a new storage facility. The flat tires were filled at that time and still hold air as pictured. The tires are the original Yokohama Nylon 6:00-16 4 Ply Rating. At one time areas starting to show rust on the rocker panels and sides in front of the rear fender wells had been sanded and primed to prevent further damage. One issue noted when moved was the rear portion of the muffler had separated and the muffler and tail pipe fell off but are included. There is no battery and the vehicle hasn’t run since put in storage. It was towed in the past two weeks with the included REDCO (Reeves Engineering Development Co.) 2 “ Ball Tow Bar to the local car wash and vacuumed and cleaned as shown. This vehicle has a roll bar.
The second 1972 Sirius Green LJ20 parts car was purchased at the same time less major systems including the engine, transmission, gas tank, rear drive shaft and exhaust system. It is ID Number 105374 with the ID tag on the left front fender. It was nearly completely disassembled and put in storage. The chassis and front and rear ends/ suspensions, steering assembly and transfer case have been reassembled with wheels to make a rolling chassis. The body has been set on the rolling chassis as pictured along with other body parts, seats, etc. The body and front fenders are in fair condition. The separate parts of this vehicle were put in covered storage and are in fair to good condition. Parts include the Sirius Green hood, windshield, front grill, front light body assembly, rear door, steering wheel/column, transfer case and shafts, 2 rear spare tire mount assemblies, instrument cluster, glove box door, transfer case cover/rubber boot/plate and dash grip bar. There are 2 nice original black front seats, pedal assembly, radiator, ventilator (heater), intake manifold/carb, wiring harness, under dash storage tray, ash tray, coil, horn, two large front fender mount rear view mirrors (one need mirror), parking brake lever assembly, etc.
In addition to these vehicles, my father bought out a dealers inventory of New Old Stock parts including 2 white front bumpers, 2 rear fender rollbar seats, 1 cylinder block, 2 cylinder heads, 3 carbs, 4 pistons, ring sets, 3 spark plugs, 1 Speedometer/instrument cluster, 3 ring/pinion gear sets, 3 half shaft gear sets, 3 shift knobs, 4 choke cable assemblies, 2 parking brake cables, 4 clutch cables, 3 head light assemblies, 2 fan belts, 1 oil pump, 4 fuel filters, 2 turn signal assemblies, 1 battery distribution unit, 3 4-way light switches, 1 light switch, 6 locking fuel caps, 3 owner’s manuals, 6 jacks (just base), etc. There are 2 pair black hard plastic fender flairs. There are 4 unused soft tops/doors sets (3 black/1 white). See pictures. The remnants of original shipping boxes indicate they were shipped from Allied Motors, LTD. Suzuki Auto Distributor in Bethesda MD. to Sunderland Chevrolet, Inc. Lemoyne, PA. Note the clear vinyl needs cleaned due to age on some of the doors/tops.
This is truly an outstanding opportunity for the serious Suzuki LJ collector/off road enthusiast. They rarely come to market as only a few thousand were imported according to the LJ web site. NOS parts are nearly impossible to find. Check eBay for parts prices if you question the interest in/value of these vehicles. More pictures available. Can arrange to view vehicles/parts prior to auction close. Father passed away and new title applied for in my name for second vehicle with ID Number 105374. First vehicle sold with Bill of Sale.
