Thank you for looking at this 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser. I purchased this about a year ago and have really enjoyed this vehicle. If you don't like when people stop you to talk about your FJ40 you should not bid on this vehicle. Every time I take it out I am stopped. beeped or waved at. I don't know a lot about the history of this vehicle. I purchased it locally and have done some work to the FJ over the last year. The wiper cover was missing and the wiper motor did not work. I got a new cover and rebuilt the electric motor. I have rebuilt the carburetor. replaced the spark plugs and wires. replaced all of the vacuum hoses as well as the cooling hoses and the main fan belt. I also replaced the fuel filter and all of the soft lines and the fuel tank. The air intake hose was shot so I found a guy that sells aftermarket hoses that are a great replacement (original equipment is no longer available). The previous owner did paint the vehicle at some point and the rear tub was covered in aluminum sheeting. These modifications are by no means original. but if you are going off road it really takes the worry out of messing up the tub. There are a few little things that I would do. but if you are looking for a mechanically sound FJ40 that looks good going down the road you can not beat this one. I think that the tires are 33 or 35's but not sure. I would go down one size next time but this is what was on her when I got it. I have had it up to 65mph with the tires that are on it. It is a blast to drive with or without the top. The spare tire rack needs some welding. and the big spare tire is really too heavy for the frame. so I took it off so that it didn't damage anything. If I were keeping it I would likely replace the fuel pump gasket as it has a small leak after you drive for a while. It runs and drives great for a vehicle that is 37 years old. If you know much about FJ40's. you know that this being a '78. it has the much sought after major engine and body update that brought the better performing and more reliable 2F engine and the rear ambulance doors. The value of the late '75-early '80's is much higher than the '65-early '75 models. and the limited amount of these FJ's available that haven't been ruined by a V8 conversion keeps getting smaller. Some of the other things that make this cruiser special are the details that you don't always find - for instance. the headrests and seats are original. Although the seats could use to be recovered. if you find a Cruiser with original seats. they're almost always missing the original headrests. The jump seats are also both in place. One needs to be re-welded at the base. but the vinyl on both is in great shape. The original engine is solid and strong. The removable top is structurally very good for its age and the curved rear glass windows are perfect. All of the lights are working. and it passed a Texas state safety inspection this year. This is my second FJ and it is painful to sell it. Unfortunately my driveway is filling up with two teen drivers and not enough parking spaces in my neighborhood. Give me four years and I may be trying to buy it back when the kids are gone. I have tried to be as transparent as possible with what I know. Please feel free to send me any questions and I will reply as quickly as possible.
