I bought this FJ80 off Ebay a week ago. The seller didn't exactly articulate well what the vehicle needed service wise. I was under the impression that it needed a couple hundred dollars in basic tune up and a new muffler. After I "inspected" the vehicle I purchased it. My love (and ignorance) for Landcruisers got the best of me. I have always wanted an FJ80 or an FZJ80, ut just never been able to afford one. This one was in my price range so I jumped on it. I drove it 6 hours home and I now realize that the previous owner didn't tell me exactly what it needed... I am a novice mechanic and I have no way to address the issues by myself. The vehicle runs and drives. The motor appears to run fine, nd the transmission works great. The frame is solid but has typical small surface rust. It has high miles, ut it's a Toyota. I have no worries with the mileage. It has a straight body with the typical dings and paint chips expected of a vehicle it's age. The interior is somewhat clean. It could use a good detailing, ut nothing that wouldn't take longer than an afternoon worth of work. The current tires are 31x10.50's and the wheels are in good shape. The tires have decent tread and will last awhile. Truck has a brand new battery. The issues that need address include: Exhaust - The truck has a terrible exhaust leak. It appears to me that it needs complete exhaust repair/replacement from the manifolds to the muffler. Muffler to tail pipe appear to be fine. Exhaust would need addressed before being able to drive the truck daily, owever I did drive it 6 hours home without much issue. The exhaust leak causes the truck to run ruff at idle and decent under power. I would think that an exhaust shop could fabricate the appropriate system and delete the catalytic convertor(s), r a new system would have to be purchased. The truck is leaking oil, hich was never conveyed to me buy the original seller. It's either the oil pan gasket leaking or the rear main seal (or both). In one of the pics you can see the small spots left on my drive after I drove it 6 hours home. It used under a half quart during that drive. I hear the 80 series were known to leak from the oil pan gasket.. The power windows don't want to work. The drivers window works, ut is finicky. The other 3 have power, ut move real slow. I have read that cleaning the runners and spraying some silicone will likely solve the issue. I do believe all window motors are working. The motor appears to run fine, ut with the bad exhaust leak it is hard to tell. I don't hear any knocking or other evidence of motor trouble. The front end is going to need rebuilt, ut anybody buying a used 80 series should expect that. I don't hear the birfield joints clicking or making noise, ut I can see grease leaking from the front end.
I got ahead of myself when I bought the truck. I had budgeted money for simple repairs and new springs, umper and winch. However, he truck needs more than what I planned for. I don't have wrenching skills, nd if I did I would be keeping the truck. It needs to go to someone who can fix the issues it has, r somebody with deeper pockets than I have. I have another Toyota project that is 75% completed and I should just keep working on it now and use it to take me to the mountains this summer. I am not trying to make money off the truck. I just want to break even in what I have in it. Of course now Ebay will take $200 or so from me when I sell it. I'm going to try and recoup that with the listing, nd if I don't get it oh well. Lesson learned. Thanks for looking. Message me with questions. Ill help any way I can. Cash upon delivery. Located in Central Illinois. I can help with shipping if need be.
