With its increased displacement. it receives one of the largest bumps in horsepower while still retaining the charm of the earlier Ghias due to their elegant 1-year only interior and body painted dash. Although a large number of these cars were built (thanks to their beautiful design) not many of them survived the test of time. However. this example is the exception. This Karmann Ghia was owned by the same woman for much of its life. It lived primarily in a dry New Mexico garage. The car was not driven much and as a result. has very low-miles and is very original. Sometime in the 70’s. the car was repainted its original color combination and up until recently. nothing else was touched. Within the last few years. a local SoCal VW enthusiast found the car and purchased it from her family. This recent owner is highly respected among the vintage VW community and is known for his excellent work at preserving original and historic examples. He immediately went to work to bring the car back to a great driving original example. Because the interior is all-original. he wanted to preserve it as much as possible. The first step was to carefully disassemble the front seats. He then had the seams re-stitched and reinforced with the correct “pucker” to the seat padding per factory standards. The work was performed by a Porsche 356 upholstery specialist. Next. he carefully removed the original rear quarter windows and installed new attachments. hinges. and rubber so that they can easily be used without fear of them falling out of the car. Of course. lots of scrubbing and cleaning was done to bring the entire original interior back to life. The wool square weave carpets and binding are all original and look amazing. The original rubber floor mats are in excellent shape. Even the headliner looks fresh with no tears. The original dash and door panels look amazing. The dash is a very rare 1-year only design that has survived years of someone wanting to install a radio. As a result. it still retains its very rare and original radio block-off plate with no holes drilled…amazing. Finally. the door “spears” aluminum trim is not only in tact. but looks great. Everything works properly. The windows wind with ease and all the lights work. The original clock was recently cleaned and it works as well. The door hinges were replaced with new ones and painted to match. The door stays were also replaced. The doors fit and close very nicely. Now. the mechanicals needed some attention. The engine was carefully removed (probably for the first time) and all the original details were preserved. There are lots of original engine trim parts that have been saved and are in wonderful condition. Once the engine was out. all the seals were replaced. as was the clutch. The carburetor was rebuilt. The original distributor and fuel pump were inspected. cleaned. and hand polished. The transmission was serviced as well. The front beam was completely rebuilt with new ball joints. steering tie rods. and new shocks all the way around. The brake system received an overhaul as well with a new Ate slave cylinder. brake lines (hard and soft). new shoes. turned drums. and a new master cylinder. Finally. the wheel bearings were replaced. Now that the car was driving great. the final step was to address some rust in the lower part of the body. A very well-respected SoCal body shop carefully removed all the lower trim and using old fashion metal working skills. they cut out rust in the rockers. fenders and under the headlights. The body was then sanded and the Sea Blue was carefully matched to original paint found in the door jambs. trunk. and engine. The top ivory part was carefully masked and protected in order to preserve some of the original patina. The glass is all original and most has never been removed from the car. The rubber is in great original-condition. The windscreen is original with minor signs of wear. This tedious work took nearly 4-months to complete. The result is fantastic. The Sea Blue color shines nicely and looks fresh. The floor pans and tunnel are all original and in pristine dry condition. All of the chrome trim is original and unrestored. It looks fantastic and is a testament to the miles and condition of the car. This Ghia is an absolute pleasure to drive and transports you to another era. It starts with ease and idles nicely at 900 rpm. The acceleration is surprisingly quick thanks to its light body. The brakes have very good pedal feel for being drums. The steering is nimble and it drives very straight down the road. This VW is ready to be driven with confidence. California registration is good through October of 2015 This VW comes with its original tool kit. jack. original spare tire. cardboard luggage protector. California “black” license plates. vintage VW dealer license plate frame. and owner’s manual.
