I bought it in California a year ago, nd have since replaced it with a newer one, ut I have simply loved it - long wheel base with black paint (code A1) with the 'Piano Lacquer' (Klavierlack) clearcoat option applied overtop of the black paint. This is the same paint and clearcoat option that I have on my own car (Piano Black with Sonnen Beige Leather interior). This is a car lover's car. 129K miles or 207K km (can switch in just a sec back and forth in settings) I have never enjoyed a car more than this, nd I have many, any cars, et I've already purchased this exact car with but a couple years newer - once you've owned a Phaeton, promise you will be hooked. Volkswagen, actually Bentley built these to outpace the Mercedes S Class and the BMW 7 series, asically a Maybach with a VW emblem, ut eventually outclassed them in all departments. See what Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear) had to say about it:

Car has a 'clear title' but a weird "California Lemon Law buyback" declaration - this is further strange given this declaration was applied to the car when it was almost new, n 2006 (when it only had about 17K miles on it) so whatever made it a 'lemon' couldn't have been too bad, as the car has been driven an additional 113,000 miles since then!! Email me for extra pics on the bumper skin damage.
Outstanding value! Built virtually by hand at the "Glass Factory" in Dresden, t features the finest materials, nnovative technologies, outstanding design and extraordinary levels of comfort. The Phaeton shares many components with the Audi A8L and Bentley marques.
The Phaeton was last sold in North America for the 2006 model year, ut VW was forced to pull the plug on it after the North American market failed to embrace a VW model with a $80K+ price tag, elling only a couple thousand units in two years. VW says the Phaeton is expected to be reintroduced to North America later this year. Resale values should be enhanced at that time.

The good:
Clean title (or kinda) and never involved in accidents, o mechanic defects.
The Interior is in 6/10 condition.
Engine pulls strong, ransmission is smooth and flawless. No mechanic problems.
Equipment is functioning well.
AC blows very cold
Flagship of Volkswagen so very luxury and comfortable, any equipment you can think of in a production sedan is there for you yet blisteringly fast when required.
The Bad:
Some exterior defects but they were there since I bought it. I'd say the exterior is in 6/10 condition.
Sometimes the remote key does not release from the ignition, ut you can use a pen or thin object to eject it.
Normal wear but not too noticeable on this 11 years old car.
The Phaeton shares the same platform as the Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur. Its body is made of aluminum. These are very unique and rare vehicles (only 156 sold in Canada). Some of the options include: satellite navigation/infotainment centre with 7-inch colour wide-screen, an outstanding sound system with an eight-channel amplifier that delivers clarity and definition through ten speakers, our zone "indirect air flow" air conditioning, ower moon roof, D changer, heated & cooled & massaging leather seats, alnut wood trim, security system, uilt-in factory dehumidifier and double paned windows, triple seals on the doors for reduced road noise, enon headlights, Continuous Damping Control (CDC) air suspension with automatic self-levelling, peed-sensitive height adjustment (with manual override to raise the car for deep snow driving condition) and four damper settings from Comfort through to Sport, ire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), ual battery to ensure that it will start anytime and so much more.
The two best things about the Phaeton are its driving dynamics and interior design.
Coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission, his translates to fast, mooth driving.
The "fast" part comes in the form of plenty of power--all you could want in virtually any situation. The throttle is responsive and extremely precise, nd when applied aggressively, t makes the Phaeton a furious machine. The gear changes are fast and smooth, nd because of the all-wheel drive the car has that Bentley, reight-train-like feel.
However, ll of this power delivery comes in the smoothest manner, nd the cockpit stays as quiet as that of the best of Lexus, MW or Mercedes, t least until you really start hammering the gas and reach the power peak at 6,500 rpm - well then, ou are in the league of the "World's Fastest Sedans" - see article: http://www.fantasycars.com/sedans/HTML/volkswagen_phaeton_w12.html
Go from the Phaeton into virtually any other car and you'll find that you're not as smooth as you thought you were--the Phaeton just made you feel that way.
In terms of the look and feel of that cockpit, t outshines that of pretty much any Lexus--and pretty much any other luxury car. The amount and quality of the Phaeton's wood trim is astonishing. Comparing it with the wood in, ay, Buick is like comparing oak paneling with a popsicle stick.
The Phaeton's controls and instruments look ultra-modern, nd the rear seat is about as luxurious as it gets, ith its own climate control system and extremely comfortable seats.
The Phaeton is inherently terrific, nd it's a real shame that it's not selling. Years from now, e expect the car will be viewed as having been well ahead of its time--and the possessor of a near-perfect interior. We enthusiastically recommend this car.
By February 2005, nly 69 Americans purchased the flagship Volkswagen. These sales are terrible for the product of a high-volume, ainstream carmaker. They seemed that way at this time last year, nd now they have declined by 55%. These beauties are RARE.
How could Volkswagen have made such a mistake? Some say nobody wants a fancy Volkswagen, ut the company's luxurious Touareg sport utility vehicle has been a success. The other popular theory is, Why buy a $150,000 Volkswagen when you can buy a car from the company's upscale Audi subsidiary?"
Thing is, he Phaeton is found it to be better than any Audi, ith the possible exception of the flagship S8 sedan. In fact, e went straight from a Phaeton into a new Audi A6 sedan, nd found the latter to have an interior that is far less sumptuous and intuitively laid out, nd driving dynamics that feel almost clumsy in comparison.
The problem is not the quality of the Phaeton--it's the quality of the VW badge. And it's the mediocre reputation Volkswagen dealers have, especially when compared with the better reputation of Audi dealers, ho are located right across the showroom floors. But perhaps more than any other factor, he Phaeton's sticker price is driving people away.

The peculiar "W12" name of the top-shelf Phaeton comes from its unusual engine design. Unlike a typical V12 that places its cylinders in one neat V-shaped row, he Phaeton's power plant meshes together two V6 engines in such a way that it resembles a shape more like a "W." The result is a more compact overall size despite the engine's substantial 6.0 liters of displacement.
Developing 420 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, he Phaeton's W12 delivers the kind of irresistible force necessary to get the nearly 5,400-pound sedan up to speed in a hurry. Our test numbers indicated that its quickest sprint from zero to 60 mph took just 6.4 seconds, respectable number for any sedan let alone one that weighs as much as the Phaeton. Like most 12-cylinder engines, he W12 produces its enormous thrust in a graceful and muted manner that belies its prodigious output. It's not the kind of engine that you lay into just to hear the exhaust roar and watch the gauges swing, ut it's always there with plenty of torque on tap to give the Phaeton a feeling of quickness that can be equally amusing.
Assuring that all of the available power gets to the ground in an efficient manner is a standard 4Motion all-wheel-drive system coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission. In dry conditions, he 4Motion system splits the power equally between the front and rear wheels, ut if it detects any loss of traction, t can reroute power to the wheels that still have grip. The Phaeton's five-speed automatic is a traditional gearbox that also offers a manual shift gate should you care to select the gears yourself.
Unlike some all-wheel-drive systems that tend to bind up when turning on dry surfaces, olkswagen has refined 4Motion to the point of complete obscurity. Get into some slippery conditions and it will no doubt come to the rescue, ut during most normal driving conditions, ou hardly know it's there. Unfortunately, uch a discreet presence is not maintained by the automatic transmission, s it's often conspicuously derelict in its duties. All too often a punch of the accelerator is greeted with confusion from the transmission as it struggles to find the right gear. Even with the near limitless torque from the 12-cylinder engine, he Phaeton can feel clumsy at times due to the transmission's inability to make up its mind in a timely fashion.
You would think that any clumsiness would result from the vehicle's massive size and substantial weight, ut the Phaeton's sophisticated suspension setup is able to keep the big sedan well in check when you toss it around a bend. Adjustable to one of four settings, he adaptive air suspension goes from pillow soft to noticeably firm in an instant. At its softest, he Phaeton glides along with the kind of unflappable stability you would expect in an autobahn-bred luxury sedan. Cranked up to maximum firmness, he suspension delivers a more direct feel for the road below, lthough calling it harsh would be an overstatement.
There are too many features to list. You must drive one to truly appreciate it. If you are seriously interested, hen I'll let her go.
