From the 1960’s-era VW Microbus ‘Pop-Top’ Camper Van – to the Vanagon-based Westfalia in the 70’s and 80’s – to the Eurovan-based Winnebago Camper Van – Volkswagen’s Camperized Mini-Van had occupied a unique place in the hearts of recreation-seekers for almost forty years. They are not made any longer and they are becoming one of the most sought-after collectable type of vehicles for camping.

For most of that time, he original VW Campers were ‘the little camper that could…’ Though relatively underpowered, oisy, nd sensitive to strong side winds, he original type VW Camper Van was a home-away-from-home for weekend getaways and summer vacations – yet was small enough, nd fuel-efficient enough to be driven to work on a daily basis. It was, erhaps, he world’s first CUV (camper/utility van), ecause it could be both a passenger vehicle and a recreation vehicle, aving owners the cost of buying two separate vehicles.

Over the years, owever, he camper had gotten bigger, eavier, nd more expensive. In 1992, he bigger front-wheel-drive, ive cylinder, ront-engined Eurovan Westfalia Camper replaced the rear-wheel-drive, ear-engined four cylinder Vanagon Westfalia. Then in 1996, he short-wheelbase Eurovan Camper was discontinued, eaving the long-wheelbase model. Its 130 inch wheelbase allowed more interior room and an overall length of 204.3 inches with a curb weight of 5106 lbs. make it a really practical and uniquely sized Camper. It’s also a car that is really easy to park around town. By 1999, he price had risen to $52,749. VW pulled out of the market in 2003.

The Eurovan Camper Van is smaller and more nimble than most motorhomes, ses less fuel, nd is easier to drive. As a small motorhome for a retired couple traveling the country, t has some great advantages.

The Eurovan’s attractive, amperized interior is done in a simple grey and white laminate finish, nd makes excellent use of space. There are two fold-out tables, umerous cupboards and drawers for food and clothing, two-burner propane stove, tainless-steel sink with electric faucet, 2,000 BTU forced-air furnace with thermostat, nd a fridge which runs on propane, attery power, r external current. All the windows have pull-down shades or privacy curtains.

There’s also a 12 gallon fresh water tank with a rear-mounted spray nozzle, n eight gallon ‘grey’ water tank with a standard flushing outlet, 5.9 gallon propane tank, nd an auxiliary 130 amp battery with auxiliary charger.

The only things missing are a toilet and shower.

The pop-up fiberglass top hinges from the rear, nd allows passengers to stand up when cooking or washing the dishes. The top can be lifted by an average-sized adult. The top level has a built-in foam mattress which sleeps two people. The pop-up top features canvas walls with zip-up windows and mosquito nets.

On the right side of the van is a single sliding door with a very large opening. Positioned to the rear of the large opening is a two-person rear bench seat, hich converts to a two-person bed that is extremely comfortable. One could purchase a removable middle seat for two extra passengers if wanted. At the opening and extending the the rear of the camper is a 9’X10’ Awning that is simple and easy to set up. You can see it on the Camper in the pictures, ut I don’t have a picture extended. It is in nearly brand new condition, ike the rest of the vehicle.

The Eurovan’s power plant is a feisty 140 horsepower 2.8 litre V6, the same engine used in the Golf VR6, etta VR6, nd Passat VR6), ut with a little less horsepower and a little more torque. This engine has sufficient power to maintain a steady velocity up long hills, nd enough low-end torque to accelerate briskly from a traffic light. The V6 engine is also surprisingly quiet and smooth when compared with previous five and four cylinder power-plants. At a steady cruising speed of 65 mph, ngine speed is just 2600 rpm. Fuel consumption is reasonable for a 5000 lb vehicle: 14 mpg in city driving, nd 18 mpg on the highway.

The Eurovan/Camper is equipped with air conditioning, ower windows with ‘pinch’ protection, ower door locks (including the rear hatch), ruise control, ower heated mirrors, ront and rear heaters, M/FM/cassette stereo, ntermittent wipers, nd a rear wiper/washer and defroster.

Standard safety features include two front airbags, hree-point safety belts for four, ive or six passengers, nti-lock brakes, nd a child-lock on the sliding rear door.

Condition:

The Paint and Body on this vehicle is beyond exceptional. The CarFax shows the body has never been in an accident, o the body panels are straight and true with no signs of bondo or damage anywhere. I have taken close of pictures of every single gap all the way around the car and you cannot find anything that is out of tolerance. Bring your micrometer and check every shut-line and bring your magnet while you are at it, nd apply it to every panel. Pictures down the sides from front to back and back to front show perfect alignment of the doors and fenders. You will not find a straighter vehicle anywhere.

The Paint is completely original to the car and I would rate it a 9.7 out of 10 and for a 17 year old vehicle maybe a 10 out of 10. There were a couple of small chips in the front hood that we touched up and maybe two or three small spots around the car, ut that was it. There is maybe one ding you can barely see it in the video on the front of the side pull door, zoomed in on it. This is a phenomenal finish on a 17 year old car and a testament to the fact that the vehicle has always been garaged and spent the last 12 years exclusively in California in the super dry Central Valley.

The Interior is in excellent overall condition, ery little wear to the seats. The front seats appear to have always been covered. The rear seat is in great shape as are the floors and all of the fixtures and systems in the vehicle. The upstairs mattress is in perfect condition and looks like it has never been used. There are no cracks or flaws in the dashboard. All the formica surrounding the cabinetry is flawless, ith no delimitation, racks or scratches. All gauges and lights work, s well the wipers, ruise control, tc. The Stereo is an aftermarket Panasonic AM/FM Stereo with a CD player with a wonderful sound quality that fills the camper.

Mechanically the car is in superb condition. My friend bought the car from the second owners in October 2013 and had it completely checked out by Chico Volkswagen before he bought it at 92063 miles. They did a 34-Point Vehicle Inspection and that report comes with the paper work, icture is attached to this ad. At that time they recommended he replace the tires and he did with Michelin Agilis 51 205/65R 15C Tires at $827. These are the heavy-duty sidewall tires designed for this type of vehicle.

The Undercarriage is extremely clean, o rust of any kind. You will notice in the pictures all the CV Boots look like new, ushings as well. We believe those items were new from the second owner.

On 6-25-13, t 93398 both batteries were replaced, he brakes were checked and the oil was changed for $346 in anticipation of a trip.

The car then sat and was not driving much for the past 2 1/2 years. On the 22nd of February of this year in anticipation of driving the car from Chico area to San Clemente he replaced the front battery again because he had left the dome light on and killed the battery so that it would not recharge to full capacity. So there is a brand new front battery and a two year old rear battery in the vehicle. The second owners replaced the timing belt at 70K miles and were very AR about the service and was always done at the dealer. The records from them got lost and do not come with the car.

I took photos of the CARFAX which shows most of the service intervals since new. I have a PDF file, o if anyone needs it just email me through eBay and I will send it to you.

The CARFAX show three owners, o accidents. It was based in Alabama and traveled up the East Coast as some of the services show with the first owner. In 2004 it was sold to a CA owner who kept it until my friend bought it in 2012. It spent most of its life traveling around CA and the West Coast.

The car starts and idles instantly, o smoke or any noises in the engine or transmission. The transmission shifts through all four gears effortlessly. The car drives straight down the road at 80 miles an hour with your hands off the wheel. There are no shakes or rattles at all, he vehicle feels like it is brand new. It has plenty of power and goes right up big hills with no effort.

On February 23rd a Smog Check was performed so this will be an easy transfer for a CA buyer.

This is a terrific vehicle for those recreation-seekers looking for an RV that’s smaller and easier to drive than a large motorhome. This could also be a great car for daily driving, s it is easy to park and fits in most standard size parking spots with ease. It is easy to see out of and has excellent mirrors for backup maneuvering. The Eurovan Camper Van is an extremely versatile package for those that want to camp or have as a weekend cruiser. These wonderful vehicles are no longer made and are becoming extremely desirable and have an almost cult following. This has got to be one of the nicest and most original ones on the road.
