Volkswagen Phaeton W-12 6.0L/Bentley Continental

Anyone looking at this vehicle will know exactly what it is or they would not be on this page. I am an eighty-year-old man and this is the best vehicle I have driven in my lifetime. I started driving and have owned a car from the time I was fifteen and have owned some fabulous machines over the years. My ownership of a Volkswagen Phaeton V-12 started while looking for a very comfortable auto for my wife, to relieve back pain on long trips. I read an article titled, “The Four Most Comfortable Cars in the World”. They were, the Maybach, the Rolls Royce, the Bentley, and the VW Phaeton. I wondered, “What the hell is a Phaeton”? After a month of study I decided to buy one.

The VW Phaeton, over the years, has demonstrated many attributes that I have not seen in another automobile. It has the best heating and air-conditioning system ever. It doesn’t just blow air in your face; it changes the interior temperature of the vehicle. The sound system will equal most expensive home systems. The sound deadening glass provides a road noise free cocoon where normal conversation can be maintained while the Phaeton travels the road at 80 plus MPH. The V-12 engine provides smooth quiet acceleration power that can be felt well through 90 MPH. The breaks provide rapid, smooth stopping power even in the 120-degree heat of the Arizona desert. The seats adjust to an infinite number of settings. On long drives, with the lumbar massage system in operation, it is a joy. There is room in the rear seats to stretch out, even with the front seats fully to the rear. All four doors are soft close and to get into an auto without it seems primitive. This is truly a luxury automobile.

The VW Phaeton was shipped from Germany to the U.S. and Canada from 2004, 2005 and 2006. The quantities were always limited and in 2006, three hundred V12 models were shipped to North America. Mine was purchased in Canada.

In addition to normal maintenance, the following has been purchased in the last 10,000 miles.

• · Breaks and Main Battery
• · Exhaust system and catalytic convertor system maintenance
• · Fuel filters and pump system maintenance

· All equipment and systems are fully functional

The Phaeton was built in Dresden, Germany in the Volkswagen Glass factory (http://www.caranddriver.com/features/vws-transparent-factory) along with the Bentley Continental and the Audi A-8L. They are built on the same work line (the machines are hand assembled) from the same parts except for the body. The Phaeton did not sell well in the United States, as Americans prefer the badge of a high priced auto. It was delivered here from 2004-2006.

I fully expect the VW Phaeton to increase in value as years pass as only 300 entered the North America in 2006. This machine is an example of the finest VW ever built. At my age it simply does not make sense to use it as a daily driver around town. My days of cross-country trips have ended; it is time for another enthusiast to take the reins.

The auto is in great shape for a daily driver or with minimum effort,a show car. The asking price is less than half that of a Bentley Continental and it is every bit as fine a car.
