Inspected through the end of the year and drive-able but it needs a power steering rack. We are the second owners of this car and have always kept up with it's mechanical needs but the PS rack was more than we wanted to take on. This generation Jetta doesn't have the extensive electronics of the Passat and newer generations so it's still a good candidate for DIY and very forgiving. Parts are very available on-line as well as used and both work manuals and first had knowledge/advice for diagnosing and doing the work are easily found on-line as well. We have done things like wiper motors and door handle levers but most mechanical maintenance (breaks and exhaust I think most recently) we have done at a shop, don't have the set up and time for things that require bracing the car up on jacks, like a PS rack which is why we're selling it. Perfect first car for someone wanting to learn about working on their own car and able to put more work than money into a good deal.
