Description

You are looking at a beautifully restored 1971 Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback (Variant). A few new acquisitions in my collection requires I sell something and I am regrettably offering this wonderful car to a new owner. This was a California car. titled and registered. from new until about 10 years ago when the owner moved to the mid-west and sold it to a collector. It was restored by that collector a few years ago after years in dry/heated storage and only taken out a few times a year to car shows. The car has less than 1. 00 miles on it since being restored. I purchased it with the original California title. I have since registered and titled the car in Virginia as an antique. The stock restoration included a professional repaint of the original orange done in a nearly flawless (and expensive) thick Sikkens brand auto lacquer. The photos will attest to the beautiful condition throughout. The entire pan underneath still has most of the factory undercoating and is solid as a rock. The only rust I see anywhere on the car is very minor surface rust under the tire in the spare tire well (see photo). This Squareback has no noticeable scratches. dents or imperfections. Rubber seals around the windows and doors were all replaced during the restoration. The black interior. seats. carpet. rear deck mat. headliner. door panels etc are all immaculate. There is one small (1 inch) area where there's a wear mark on the upper corner of the drivers seat where the shoulder belt crosses and rubs. There is an under dash tray installed for storage. The car came from the factory without a radio and has never had one. though I did install a new antenna in preparation for adding a stereo later (antenna not shown in photos). All gauges work except for the odometer and clock (the odometer stopped last summer but the speedometer functions accurately). I'd rate the chrome bumpers an 8 out of 10- just a few minor blemishes that you can't see from 5 feet. I've added a new horn and while there is power at the horn connection there's still no sound- likely a ground wire that still needs to be sorted. That's about it for what the car needs to be perfect. All glass is excellent. The motor was rebuilt at approximately 85. 00 miles (from prior owner) so it now has under 20k miles on the rebuilt engine. The 4-speed transmission and clutch was rebuilt at the time of restoration and operates perfectly. The engine starts and runs like new with the original fuel injection intact and operating as it should. An oil filter has been added to the traditional filter-less system and the oil (zinc added Valvoline 20/50 racing oil for added protection) was just changed. After purchasing the car I sourced a newly restored. period correct. Squareback wood roof rack. In January I sent the car to a top area Porsche/VW mechanic who called it one of the nicest Type 3's he's ever seen. We replaced the original factory shocks with new KYB shocks all around. We added a new rear dual exhaust with factory correct muffler. a new steering damper. and put on new front brakes (new pads. calipers rebuilt). The entire front end was tightened up (steering box. control arms etc). The car runs true and straight down the road. Receipts for all this work are in the car. I took these photo's just before it went into the shop so the photo's do not show the new exhaust. new antenna. new VW wheel center caps etc. This Squareback is riding on very nice Porsche style Riviera polished 15 inch wheels and nearly new Continental brand radials. Can be shown locally by appointment. Feel free to bring your mechanic or I'll be happy to put you in touch with mine. All emails through Ebay will be answered in a timely manor. I'll be happy to speak with you in person. just send an email first. This will be an excellent addition to any VW enthusiasts collection. it's a very rare to find a Squareback in this condition. especially on the east coast.
